Rodney Hood Refuses to Enter Game in Garbage Time

I see a lot of "I like Rodney" sentiments, and I just want to know... why?

What is there to like? He SEEMS nice? He's streaky, soft, doesn't D up, a mediocre and/or unwilling passer, and missed a third of his games here for reasons I'm sure almost none of you cite what the majority of games missed were even from.

He's Rodney Hood Prince of Threes! He seems like a nice person. Fans always get excited when a player was the steal of their draft class (which he was for the first two years). He was usually pretty positive and upbeat. A few years ago moni posted a video of Trey Burke sitting down on the bench in huff and then Hood reaching over and tickling his side. Burke looks down all upset and then see's it was Hood, smiles and smacks his hand away. I don't know why, but it was very endearing.

Other reasons - The Joe Johnson picture. He has twins that are adorable. He just seems likeable. He married a girl from the Duke basketball team (I don't know why that adds to his likeability...loyalty to college sweetheart maybe?)

I get nervous when I think about how good Hood was as a rookie and then realize he never really improved. What if that happens to Donovan??? (Obviously Donovan's rookie season is WAY more impressive and there's no reason to believe he won't improve, but what if??? Will we still love Donovan if he's only score 22PPG in 4 years?)

On April 18 apparently Rodney and his wife welcomed twins into their family. I wonder if things at home are adding to his work pressures.

I wonder if he didn't want to play because he actually feels like he's been a monumental failure and doesn't feel like he even deserves garbage minutes. We don't know why he didn't go into the game, but the fact that he wasn't disciplined for it suggests the possibility that he wasn't doing it out of spite, but for some other reason.

Or maybe he really is just frustrated with how things have shaken out. His numbers dropping, losing a starting role, then being leapfrogged by a rookie (kinda like how Mitchell leaped over him).

Players are real people, too, with real thoughts, concerns, worries, etc. Yeah, they can make a lot of money playing basketball. But I don't think that makes all problems go away. I feel bad for Hood because I generally liked him on the team, he seemed like a nice and good dude, and he had some great moments here. It seems likely that he wanted out of Utah, and now he's really going through something as a result.

You have a point here about DM.

As much as I hate to agree with trolls, zzzzzzzzzz I'm looking at you, if DM doesn't improve his shot selection and shooting percentage we are not winning many chips.

Most of what has me converted to the "house of spida" is his work ethic and drive to improve. Kobe was legendary in his drive and work. I think Donovan has that same "it factor". Donovan, just the way he plays now, helps make us a good team. DM making similar progress in the off season, as he did from game one of this season to now will help make us true contenders for the crown.

I expect him to develop several moves to counter what he is setting in the playoffs. I base that optimism on what he has done so far in his bball career. From freshman season to now, the leap is shocking. Why would he stop adding to his game? No reason at all. That is why the future is so bright.
Imo

DM is driven and won't stop working and improving. The only that stops him is injury and I really, really, really hope that doesn't happen. I'm not saying he's going to be a 30ppg scorer, but I am saying it's possible. Just the possibility is enough for me after all the hopes and dreams invested in hoping that other guy would be able to average 20.

It doesn’t even worry me. Donovan is going to be a super star. Period. I truly don’t even think about Donovan being anything but a super star. He’s too smart, dedicated, and athletic to not be. Donovan’s too perfect of a package not to pan out and I don’t see his personality/mindset changing. He will become a better shooter and begin to see the floor better and at that point he will literally be unstoppable.

An injury worries me, because one injury to Donovan, his knees especially, could completely derail his career. He relies heavily on his speed and especially athleticism to do what he does. I hate to even mention/think about it, but that’s the one thing that scares the **** out of me especially with how he lands sometimes.

Tbh if you question where Donovan’s headed at this point you’re crazy.

I don't know what DL offered him as an extension. Maybe 15m a year. He won't get near that this offseason.

In Hood defense, the Cavs with Lebron would be one of the toughest places to find your grove.

No training
No structure
No role

Regardless he'll probably lose $8-10M/yr on what Utah offered in his extension talks.

Only if you have a bigger ego than you should. Playing with Lebron = a lot of open shots. Practice your catch and shoot.

Almost makes you wonder if there's something more to it as well.

If so, certainly hope he's brave enough to face it and get help. Always liked Rodney.

If he has major stomach issues to start games then there are likely other mental symptoms. This thing spiraled on him... not sure where he goes from here.

Why does anyone like Rodney Hood?

Do you have Alzheimer’s ? Don’t you recall jumping to bump your head to the lightbulb to this?

That's nice, but I remember this.

2014-15 - 50gp
2015-16 - 79gp
2016-17 - 59gp
2017-18 - 60gp

He was available for on average 62 games per year. That is 75% of possible games.
We should never have a starter or 6th man that is only available 75% of the time. Regardless of skill, we need players that will be here 90% or more of the games. Injuries can happen, nothing we can do about it, but knowing about Hood's availability in advance (for the most part) is something we (the Jazz) could do something about. Trading him was a great move imo, despite the fact that I like him mostly.

Great points in the last few posts. It's human nature to vindicate that the Jazz made the right trade. I hope he turns things around. I always liked hood.

I do think the risk management of injuries in the NBA is a problem. Certain players play through everything. Others take every chance to preserve their body and prolong their career. It's not possible to know what another human being is really experiencing at any given moment, but the NBA certainly has a growing problem there.

I don't know where Hood lies on that spectrum tho, but he does have chronic lingering issues one way or another.

Donovan did not come into this season expecting to be a primary scorer for any team, let alone a playoff team. He is learning on the fly and one thing he has shown is that he learns quickly and learns deeply. I don't think he wants to be a high volume low efficiency scorer. But he was being asked to put points on the board and to basically just keep creating offense regardless.

I'm guessing the FO and Snyder will work with DM on a game plan, very possibly along with some roster additions, to get him higher quality shots more often next year.

Donovan wasn't sure he'd have an opportunity to take 4 shots a game going into the season...

You can even see JFC celebs in the end of the clip.

I liked the Rodney Hood who showed up and won fourth quarters for us with incredible shooting. Everyone looks worse in Cleveland. Rodney would probably not be too thrilled about coming back to SLC a second time but if he was I would take him. He would just have a smaller role here. With the right attitude and a little more health and consistency he could be amazing here. If his market value is really low, then why not?

Rodney Hood
@ $22 million/year INSANITY (but that's what he was thinking last year)
@ $18 million/year DESPERATION
@ $15 million/year (Not sure anyone pays this in the current market)
@ $12 million/year Decent Value
@ $8 million/year STEAL!!!

Where does he fall given the last 12 months and given the lack of teams with $$$ to spend? I really don't have a clue.
