What's new

Rubio from deep

Rubio's the key. When he plays well we have 5 near all-star caliber players on the floor at the same time... and yes, Favors and Ingles are near all-stars.

In most cases you can"t fault his effort, he really plays all out. I agree with what has been said earlier. Quin puts him in good positions to score with the offensive schemes and has been patient with his bad nights. He's learning the plays and taking smarter shots within the offense now. Hope he can sustain it throughout the rest of the season and into the playoff's because if he doesn't, there may not be any playoffs.

Rubio has impressed me with his trickiness around the floater range. That little leaning bank shot is decent and he also gets fouled on it fairly frequently. He generally is only taking wide open set shot 3's now, which is what he should be doing. He still seems like he's constantly at an athleticism disadvantage offensively, but is smart enough to play the angles well. I think he's definitely earned a chance to improve over the offseason before we decide on his future. I was set on trading him, but assuming he doesn't fall off a cliff again he might have made some substantial improvement this year. I really really want to see what they can do with him with a full off-season. Maybe he really can become a Kidd-esque spot up 3 point shooter, defender, and distributor.

But really tho, I dont think Favors is close to All-STar, but he is much better than his raw stats indicate this year. I think this has been his best year as a pro.

Derrick Favors is clearly better than Al Horford, who was actually an all-star this year. But that's only because he plays in the garbage East.

You would think Rubio shouldn't take too many shots, but actually when he's agressive we win. We are 13-2 when Rubio scores 16 or more and 12-2 when he takes at least 12 shots.

15-15 when he takes less than 10 shots.

Favors is solid, I think he's doing as well as you can ask from him in this lineup, and he had some great nights while Gobert was out. He's not the long term solution and he'll probably leave next summer, but right now it's all good as long as he keeps working on D, making a few mid-range jumpers here and there and hustling for the occasional put-back. Plus we're seeing a nice two-man game with him and Rudy every now and then, with some excellent high-low passes that are working to perfection every time.

As for Rubio, he's not nearly the best version of himself yet, but he's doing just fine and he'll get there. He still needs to be more aggressive attacking the basket, like he was the past couple of years (that helped his scoring efficiency a lot), and he needs to keep working with Gobert on those pocket passes and lobs. Rudy doesn't have the greatest hands and their timing is still a bit off, which leads to some avoidable TOs, but the improvement on that area is evident since the start of the season, and he's taking much better care of the ball overall.

Favors numbers are no where near all star numbers.

This is true on this team and this situation. But put him on the right team in the right conference.....

Good stats

Rofl. Stop. Just...stop.

Here are the power forwards in the discussion of better power forwards than Favors:

Serge Ibaka
LaMarcus Aldridge
Paul Millsap
Kevin Love
Blake Griffin
Draymond Green
Anthony Davis

Griffin, Green, Aldridge and Davis you could rank above Favors, and if you can get one of them -- which you can't -- get them. Davis and Aldridge I'd classify more as centers anyways.

Favors and Millsap: toss up.
Favors and Ibaka: Favors.
Favors and Love: Love's better on offense, Favors waaay better on defense.

So yes. Borderline allstar.

My takeaways from that are that in one sense it's not all that surprising considering how much grief he gets for not shooting when he has an opportunity, but it also goes to show how good of a job our offense does to get him that many open looks. At the same time though he's putting up a lot of threes and yet only two have been tightly contested? That seems nuts to me.
