What's new

Rumor: Jazz prepared to match 'any offer' for Hayward.

David Locke was on the radio and about lost his mind. He was being asked about the contract and how Jazz fans should react.

He said "how about we do something new and like our players" and was about to blow a gasket but Scott Garrard stopped him.

Locke can be such a fool. Sometimes he has good points but when you disagree with his analysis he loses it.

If you believe Hayward is just a role player, then you don't match the offer.
If you believe he hasn't tapped his full potential (as Cleveland does), then you let him work with a great player development coach in Quin Snyder and realize what a lousy *** coach Corbin really was.
I think that hayward is the player on the current team that recieved the most benefit (minute and opportunity wise) under corbin..... therefore i think we know more what he is than any of the other jazz players.

What is he? A pretty good role player that should not be paid a dollar more than 12 million per (still overpaying) that could easily be replaced

So... If Cavs sign Hayward to Max. Pacers signed CJ and Croatian forward Damjan Rudez... Is it better for the Jazz to try to pursue Lance Stephenson? Would he even realistically consider the Jazz?

I realize he has had some moments where he isn't the sharpest cheese in the fridge but he is a talent and maybe Quin can rope him in a little.

Look at it this way: If we pay Hayward 15M a year, if you average out his yearly pay including his rookie contract, he will have made 8.8 per year. If you have to keep in mind that with the CBA in place, many players are vastly underpaid on their rookie contracts.

An 8.8M per year average for Hayward seems reasonable to me.

Or could look at it this way...his bad play as our primary option helped us land a potential #1 option in Exum so we should reward him...

That is actually a really dumb way to look at it.
Sorry

Might be the most useless way to look at it.

1. We're going into 14/15 now. The cap should increase by about $4.5mm

2. Take a look at the footnote with those max numbers. The 0-6 max is not actually 25%, but something close to 25% X 42.14/44.74.

3. (This is more for the poster you were responding to) The max is the maximum amount for the first year of the contract. If a team signs its own free agent, it can give him annual raises equal to 7.5% of the first year salary. If a team signs another team's free agent, it can give him annual raises equal to 4.5% of the first year salary.

Can't rep you again right now. I noticed my mistake a few hours later but I can barely believe the news might be true.

The NBA is structured to pay players this way. Rookies can't be paid more. Many get screwed. Because of this, players coming off their rookie contract are going to get paid. Sure, Hayward is going to get paid more than he is worth, but it based on the way the league structures their contracts.

If I underpaid an employee for many years it would be easy to swallow overpaying him if that is what it took to keep him around.

You don't do that in a salary capped league unless you want to always suck.

I listened to that Locke piece also. What a load of bs. Him claiming that Jazz fanz have NEVER liked a player. We all liked DWill, millsap, korver, and even boozer at one point. Kazz fans don't have any duty to salivate over every overpaid jazz player. Locke is a dick smash...

By this logic, every player coming off a rookie deal should be maxed.

I cant wait till next year when we max burks and kanter

Jeremy evans was really screwed on his rookie deal.... he should be getting about 10 million per year right now to pay him back for such a small rookie contract

I agree with what you are saying. All I am trying to point out is that the league is structured in a way for rookies to be underpaid and those coming off of rookie contracts to get overpaid. The league artificially suppresses the rookie contracts. As this is across the board, when these players come off their rookie contracts, teams are going to have more to pay them in general. I'm not saying a team should pay someone the max for the hell of it. I'm saying Gordon has an inflated value league wide due to the way the CBA is structured. And the players wanted it this way.

I didn't say that. I'm saying players coming off rookie contracts get paid more, because there is more $ to spend across the league. Honestly, a lot of rookies get screwed.

I see

So then i agree hayward should get overpaid..... something like 11 million would be overpaid
Sounds good to me

I didn't hear the interview but based on his supposed comments I totally agree with him. Jazz fans drive me INSANE with how they always bitch and bitch about our players. Nothing is ever good enough.

WE never bitched about Stockton, Malone and Hornacek. But we do take offense to players who don't always give 100%, don't give a damn about playing defense, or don't show an ounce of loyalty. There might not be a squad as universally loved by their fan base as the Jazz' 2003-04 team. Didn't make the playoffs, but damn how they overachieved!
