My kids are eight and six, and as I see what their schools are like and will be, I start to grow concerned that public education may not be an option. Does anyone send their kids to private schools? Catholic schools? How much do they cost?

I'm in the Arlington, VA area so obviously costs will be different, maybe much different. But I'm still starting to think that paying an arm and a leg may be worth it.

Also, once you start sending your kids to private/Catholic (is there even a difference?) schools, is it tough to pull them out and put them back in public if you feel the cost isn't worth it?

Any help would really help here. You won't see it in the news but one fifth grader brought in a knife this year and one a bb gun. Not cool. We're looked at as a good district too.

Had a dream two nights ago that I hadn't finished college yet and I had to go back.

Worst freaking dream ever.

Every school has it's problem students, even the private and Catholic schools. As long as your school is accredited, it's not an issue for students to go back and forth between them (my siblings and I did just that).

The best option it to choose a wealthy suburb, probably.

We live in a very wealthy suburb. That's just my problem. What are the pros and cons of public vs. private/Catholic?
 
I had my kids in private school for 3 years. They tested two grades ahead in every subject. I put them in public for the sports teams and after. One year they now test at theyre grade level.
 
My oldest son (12), who has PDD-NOS - what amounts to a light shade of autism - was struggling his last year in public elementary, so we switched him to a charter school for Jr High.

It's made all the difference in the world and doesn't cost us an arm and a leg. He is excelling and it isn't even an autism specialty school.
 
I'm just going to marry somebody a lot smarter than me to ultimately make my kids' schooling decisions. I'd probably look into it more on a needs basis than just blanketly saying that all my kids need to go through certain college prep schools or something though. Get them rolling in public schools for a few years and just see how they learn individually ....what type of social atmosphere they enjoy....help them to learn the value of after school study habits, and go from there.
 
Some informative posts. Bronco would you be willing to say how much that charter school costs you? Send me a personal message if you want. Don't parents who send their kids to those or private schools get major money back since they shouldn't have to pay taxes that go toward public schooling? Would both of myy kids have to go to private for me to get that? Or if I just sent the older one for now, would I still get half back? Hope that makes sense.
 
My nephew went to Challenger, which is a private school. He turned put great. He is about graduate from the U with a 4 year degree.

When and how did you get kids? Or is this a plot line for a future story?
 
Ex-Juvenile Delinquent. HS-Dropout. turned entrepreneur. Trial + Error learner here. i read maybe 5books before 20, now im approaching 1000...

i have nothing good to say about public schools other than if you are a wolf like myself, there will be impressionable chicks everywhere you turn.

promotes mob-mentality. once your behavior is deemed unacceptable they vouch for all sorts of drugs you do not need.

talk to me about my english, capitilization, grammar. i pull 9.5's and 10's in 1 minute or less, they dont have a chance, never did.

I don't know how it works outside of Utah, but here the charter schools don't charge tuition. The cost is pretty comparable to regular public school. Most of the schools have a waiting list. But my son's average class size is around 18 students, I believe.
