I've recently read a few sci-fi steampunk books. I like them. Anyone else read steampunk?

I read book one of that series off a recommendation... didn't like it. I thought the writing was stiff, and the ploy got tired after a while.Just finished "Against All Things Ending" by Donaldson (book nine of Thomas Covenant). Looking forward to book ten (supposedly the final one).

I have read one, a while back, can't remember the title. But I liked it ok. Can you recommend an author to start with?
You guys need to give R.A. Salvatore a try. best fantasy books on the planet
Big fan of Salvatore. Love the Drizzt stuff.
I'm just starting the Percy Jackson series in the limited free time I have in the evenings. I'm half way through #1 and although it isn't some deep piece of literature, it is entertaining and very different from the movie. In the movie, they removed a ton more than they did in the Harry Potter books and they completely changed entire story lines. It is a completely different story and better in the book.

Thought people might be interested to know that George R. R. Martin is now officially done writing the fifth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance with Dragons. The author announced the book's completion via a blog entry simply showing a picture of King Kong dead (Martin had repeatedly referred to writing the book as "wrestling with Kong"). He had earlier announced a firm release date for the book of July 12, but hadn't completed the book at that time. Nice to know he's actually finished it now.
On a related note, why is it that fantasy books as a genre seem to spawn into ten-book-long series? Jordan, Martin, Goodkind, Brooks, Donaldson, Eddings, Rowling... they've all written a series of books that just goes on and on and on... and in most cases the quality has indeed deteriorated as the series wore on. And I'm sure there are many other fantasy authors I'm not thinking of at the moment.Wait what? I thought the Covenant stuff was done long ago?
