Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books

Heard good things about Game of Thrones. I've read the books but no HBO. I will probably just wait and buy the series when it's done.

I've recently read a few sci-fi steampunk books. I like them. Anyone else read steampunk?

I have read one, a while back, can't remember the title. But I liked it ok. Can you recommend an author to start with?

Just finished "Against All Things Ending" by Donaldson (book nine of Thomas Covenant). Looking forward to book ten (supposedly the final one).

I read book one of that series off a recommendation... didn't like it. I thought the writing was stiff, and the ploy got tired after a while.

I'm just starting the Percy Jackson series in the limited free time I have in the evenings. I'm half way through #1 and although it isn't some deep piece of literature, it is entertaining and very different from the movie. In the movie, they removed a ton more than they did in the Harry Potter books and they completely changed entire story lines. It is a completely different story and better in the book.

You guys need to give R.A. Salvatore a try. best fantasy books on the planet

Big fan of Salvatore. Love the Drizzt stuff.

I really like the Drizzt books by Salvatore, but I don't think they are the best fantasy books on the planet.
He excels in the battle portions of a book. His characters are pretty good but not as good as the Eddings characters.
Most of the books seem to have a Drizzt journal entry of his thoughts on life etc... where Salvatore can pontificate.
Start with the Homeland trilogy, then go to the Icewind Dale trilogy... and go from there in the series if you want.
The Homeland trilogy is one of my all time favorite trilogies.

Most books that go to movie are like that. I almost always enjoy the books much better.
The Percy Jackson series is entertaining, and they are quick reads.
They are light, but that was the intent.... YA focused, entertaining, and quick to keep the attention of the reader.

Thought people might be interested to know that George R. R. Martin is now officially done writing the fifth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance with Dragons. The author announced the book's completion via a blog entry simply showing a picture of King Kong dead (Martin had repeatedly referred to writing the book as "wrestling with Kong"). He had earlier announced a firm release date for the book of July 12, but hadn't completed the book at that time. Nice to know he's actually finished it now.

Yes, Percy Jackson is good stuff. I also recently read the first book in the new series by the same author, The Red Pyramid (I think), and that was quite good too.

This pleases me.

I'm starting this book tonight.

After, I plan on reading The Gates. I'm really, really looking forward to this book. I've heard a lot of good things about it and I'm a huge fan of John Connoley.

Wait what? I thought the Covenant stuff was done long ago?
On a related note, why is it that fantasy books as a genre seem to spawn into ten-book-long series? Jordan, Martin, Goodkind, Brooks, Donaldson, Eddings, Rowling... they've all written a series of books that just goes on and on and on... and in most cases the quality has indeed deteriorated as the series wore on. And I'm sure there are many other fantasy authors I'm not thinking of at the moment.
