Sheridan: Spurs front-runner to land Jefferson

i think mgmt was just fed up w/ DWill, which is why he heard the way he did. everyone who comes or leaves always says how professional & family oriented mgmt is.

I agree. However I am a firm believer that you live your values regardless of wether someone else is being a jackwagon. I do think Utah is proffesional and family oriented but using DWill as an excuse to fail to live up to those morals/principles is a poor excuse at best.

Are you kidding me? We could tolerate SJax for 30 games (he's a UFA) and Mills on that cheap of a salary to get Splitter (he'd be a great 3rd big or starter alongside Favors next year) at his salary...the problem is, I don't think the salaries match up per the CBA.

actually they do match almost straight across

Hey Jazz fans, Spurs fan here, saw this story so came to get your opinions.

First of all, Splitter is a restricted free agent this year so I suspect if this trade doesn't happen, the Spurs will match almost any deal for him.

Secondly, I'm not sure the Spurs do this deal with Tiago. We are finally starting to see good results with him in the starting line up and he is pretty much our only decent big when Duncan is resting.

However, I do think a player like Danny Green would be on the trade block. Guy is young, capable defender and can hit 3s. Would a deal of Green + Mills + Jackson (for salary) + 2013 1st rounder for Al Jeff be enough for the Jazz?

Locke is going to be totally unbearable on tomorrow`s podcast. Splitter is the 4th or 5th best offensive player on Locke`s ranking - in the league!

Sorry I'm late to this party.

Before Sheridan wrote this story did he bother look at last years play-offs?

Jazz can't do a 1 for 3 when there roster is at 15.

Is it too early for thread to disquss how the Jazz can trade Boozer and Milsap to re-acquire Jefferson?

KOC says story's are 'leaked' to create pressure. What if you are Minny and you really want the Jazz to give you Jefferson for AK and Williams, but KOL has been asking to wait because there is no hurry in Jazz land. And Minny knows KOL covets Bargnani if he is healthy. It doesn't cost Minny anything to float a 'rumour' to a reporter in an attempt to stir up controversy hoping it pressures teh jazz to make a move sooner or lower their asking price.

Watson, Bell, Jeffersuck for those three then.

Sheridan seems pretty confident on this, maybe has a legit source. Using an analogy of the Spurs being Secretariat in the Belmont stakes, and Al being the prize, would seem to me he is in the ninety percentile range on certainty.
The Spurs likely envision using Al as a super 6th man, holding down their offense while the elderly Duncan rests. Not a bad idea.

And Jefferson would be an amazing 6th man. He feasts on lower-tier big men.
Spurs/Pop are smart.
If only the Jazz capitalized on this and put Milsap/Favors as starters and Jefferson coming in off the bench. Hell, even Milsap would fit that role.

Or as mentioned before bell and Watson could be boughtout and cut from the roster.

Because the Jazz routinely pay guys not to play. Of course with all the extra revenue they have this season from all the sell-out crowds the Jazz would absolutely want to pay out extra salary just to trade a 6 week rental of Al into a 6 week rental of Splitter and Jackson just so they can have Patty Mills on the team next season.

This trade leak is more suspicous than the Obama trap photo.

I hope the Jazz are smart enough to find a 3rd team to take on Stephen Jackson's salary...
Here is what I believe is a perfect trade scenario...
https://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=bytvjhv

Utah gets:
Patty Mills
Tiago Splitter
Derrick Williams
Mills becomes Mo Williams back-up or allows the Jazz to not re-sign Mo. Splitter, Kanter, and Favors could be a huge interchangeable threesome. Derrick Williams makes Millsap tradable now or walkable in free agency. He could be the sixth man that we all want Millsap to be.

Spurs get:
Jefferson
JJ Barea or Ridnour
Spurs get the best big to pair Duncan with since David Robinson retired and another last shot or two at a championship. Depending on Spurs desires, they can have Barea or Ridnour to back up Tony Parker. Ridnour might even be an upgrade from Mills.

Timberwolves get:
Stephen Jackson
Dejaun Blair
Two first round draft picks (one from Spurs and one from Jazz)
Future second round pick from Jazz
Wolves get picks in exchange for taking on Jackson's expiring salary. Jackson also could give them significant minutes this season as they lost Josh Howard and Brandon Roy. Dejaun Blair is a stopgap at PF with Love being injured. Could also be a solid future back-up for Love. A few picks is a solid deal for Williams especially for a team that likes picks.

we could always buy-out Jax but the funniest bit is this:
"So the time for the Jazz to move him is now, and the team with the biggest need for an upgrade at center is the Spurs. The inability to protect the rim was one of the prime reasons for their collapse in last year’s Western Conference finals when they had won 20 in a row and had a 2-0 lead on the Thunder, only to lose the next four."

The entire article/premise is laughable. The line you pointed out shows how ridiculous Sheridan's claim is.

Top 5 reasons this article is not believable
5. I'm pretty sure Scott Layden didn't leave on good terms. At least his dad seemed pretty miffed that he didn't get the GM spot.
4. Al Jefferson can't protect the rim. Of all things Sheridan points out Big Al's defensive merits??? HAS HE EVER SEEN HIM PLAY??!!
3. The Spurs played/swept ("played" is too nice of a word, more like "abused") the Jazz in the playoffs last year. They know Al Jefferson can't get a team out of the first round.
2. The Spurs are on top of the power rankings right now, WHY WOULD THEY MAKE A MAJOR TRADE????
1. The Jazz and the Spurs are the most secretive teams in the NBA. Word would not leak. This is all speculation (which Sheridan admints) but it is really poorly done speculation. Just read the article, it is ridiculous.

The only reason why they haven't cut Bell yet is Cuz he could be used as a filler in a trade... They are paying bell to not play right now, I'm sure they won't have a problem cutting him! While Watson is only owed just over million this year, they have already payed over half of that, so cutting him is only losing about $600,000 overall!!!

Non issue Mellow!!!

Also splitter is an RFA so we could keep him if the price is right to be our third big!!

Distinguishing between the two differentiates the good basketball Web sites from the bad sites.

But figuring out who is available is not rocket science if you speak to the right people, and I speak to a lot of plugged-in people on a regular basis.

Well aren't you the self-appointed ****!

That trade, this thread:

I'd honestly try to pry a 1st away from the Spurs. I think they'd do it. Mills and SJax are nothing to us and Splitter's an RFA. They meanwhile get a great chance at a title. If you're them, is the 30th pick really that important to you if it means a shot at the title?

This should be a sticking point for us imo.

If the Jazz would take Danny Green instead of Tiago Splitter I'd do this in a heartbeat.

I saw the headline "Spurs interested in Jefferson" and got excited for about 3 seconds. Then reality hit me and I felt ashamed for the small amount of excitement I felt.

If you believed Sheridan you are an idiot.

He didn't say they would get him, he just said they are the front-runner.

Based on what? Jefferson's amazing defense? Is that why the Spurs want him?

It doesn't matter what he said. It is all made up. He needed an article so he created some spin.

Worse than Peter Vescey's trade rumors of old.
