Should Cody spend time in the G LEAGUE

Should Cody Williams get sent down to the Stars for a stint?

Cody was not really drafted for physical traits, he's a well below average athlete currently.

He was drafted for hypothetical physical traits if he ever gained weight and how those would pair with his BBIQ and hypothetical handle and jumpshot.

His jumpshot was always a huge question mark as well as his form was completely broken and needed to be fixed for him to have a shot in the league.

Overall, the lack of progress over the last 2 years is... Very alarming. Since the beginning of 2023, he hasn't produced at any level and his jumpshot form has gotten worse.

We'll check back in three years idk.

I think it's also worth pointing out that the Jazz don't have a huge history of drafting 19 year olds, another reason why we're not used to having to be as patient.

Yeah, him struggling with his shot could have been anticipated, but personally I didn't really plan on. If he could just hit open jump shots he would be playable.

Andrei Kirilenko, Deshawn Stephenson, CJ Miles, Dante Exum, Trey Lyles, Taylor Hendricks... there are some, but the Jazz are accustomed to being a mature, veteran team where rookies don't normally play much. Rudy Gobert didn't really play as a rookie until the last several games of a bad season. Jerry Sloan didn't even play Deron Williams much as a rookie.

Dante Exum playing a lot as a rookie was a bit of an anomaly for the Jazz.

Agreed, I don’t think we can simultaneously say “he needs years to work on his body” and also say we drafted him because of physical ability. If we’re being honest, Cody’s physical tools are a huge weakness of his and maybe the biggest limiting factor to his game at the moment. He has long arms, but that is just one physical attribute out of many.

It’s akin to saying we drafted him for his three point shooting ability. He did not have great three point shooting indicators on paper and his release isn’t exactly beautiful either.

Now we are just inventing history. Jerry Sloan played Deron William 29 MPG for 80 games in his rookie year: he was the 3rd on the team in the total minutes played.

And there were plenty young Jazz rookies who got a lot of minutes in their very first season: besides those you had already mentioned there were Alec Burks, Enes Kanter, Kosta Koufos, Ronnie Brewer, Kris Humphries... All of them got consistent 10+ MPG in their first year. Like on every team those who are ready to contribute get minutes, those who are not are riding the pine.

You're right, DWill played. He was just behind Milt Palaccio.

Good Quote from Will Hardy in Andy Larsen's Tripple Team:

“This is an opportunity for him to play a lot, have the ball in his hands, catch a little bit of a rhythm, and kind of continue on his path of development and improvement with us right now,” Hardy said. “I think there were times here where he was a little careful, and I think that’s totally understandable. I want him to let it rip a little bit more.”

No one is posting highlights so I guess it sucked
I'm not sure where you even find Gleague game highlights.

I watched some. He wasn't good, but at least was much more aggressive getting shots off. He had a cutting dunk and a step back fadeaway 2 that were really nice looking. He wasn't going to magically start making 3s, so missing those wasn't surprising.

Honestly the worst part of the game was his defense. He was being asked to play defense off ball and did not look good. Not surprisingly he is not strong enough to help on defense in the paint.

If they play well they get uploaded to youtube pretty quickly

If I was in charge of his development I would have him rotate between having him in the G and basically playing entire games for ~2 weeks, have mini-off seasons where he strength trains and polishes his skills in practice but plays no games for ~2 weeks, and have him play with the Jazz for ~2 weeks. He has a long way to go.

The inefficient scoring is whatever, but obviously still not a great sign. My biggest ongoing concern with Cody is that he doesn’t do much else besides score on the court. He’s considered a well rounded and versatile player but he’s really pushing the “master of none” thing to concerning levels. 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and zero stocks in 28 minutes reinforces the low motor concerns for me.
