Should Cody spend time in the G LEAGUE

Should Cody Williams get sent down to the Stars for a stint?

In hindsight, we probably should have been skeptical of his ability to shoot to begin with. He only shot 41 threes at Colorado and 2.4 attempts per40. I convinced myself that it was because Colorado coaching limited threes (which is true), but he's never proven to be an accurate or volume shooter otherwise. When the volume is that low, we should probably ask how we would feel if it was 30% instead of 41%. At that volume it's not much different, especially with only 71% from the line.

If Ainge put much stock in college shooting percentages we never would have drafted Keyonte. Doesnt seem to be something they prioritize.

Key is different, his volume/degree of difficulty on his shots was very high as well as a higher free throw percentage. The 3FG% doesn't matter as much as volume and FT% to begin with, which is why I brought it up with Cody.

Last night felt like the first time I could visibly see Cody frustrated, and it also feels like he is regressing a bit. I continue to like him getting defensive minutes against good players, but he also needs some positive offensive moments. It's a difficult balance.

He’s got two issues right now: a) He’s kind of a waif. b) He hasn’t figured out how to shoot from NBA range. He’s a good shooter from about 20 feet, but his flick-of-the-wrist jumper without elevation isn’t going to make NBA 3s.

These issues aren’t going to be solved overnight. Hopefully, the coaches are pointing this out to him.

He did get bodied by three defenders on one of his drives last night and probably earned free-throws, but he wasn’t ready to play against Devin Booker. That said, he held up better defensively than our other guys.

The defensive of the ball is one of the big worries in the GLeague for me. The play there is so disorganized and unstructured. I think it can lead to some bad habits and it also would deny Cody the experience of playing against real talent and play in/against real systems.

As bad as he is on offense, he looks just fine on defense. Struggling in some areas but I think he’s exceeded my expectations.

I don’t know what you’ve been watching but he can’t even spot up shoot right now and this is coming from one of the biggest Cody believers on here

Yes, so how much worse will it be if he can’t score at the GLeague level. So let him figure it out at this level.

The only thing Cody has going for him is being 19. Let's hope his ceiling is much higher than what he'll probably peak at. I didn't like his pick cause it reminded me of Exum and Frank N.

I thought Cody looked a lot better coming off the bench. Maybe it gives him some time to see the game a little before he jumps in there.

I`ve never understood that the only way to develop players in the US is to play them. In Europe, young talents get a few minutes here and there in spots where they are able to succeed. They spend a lot of time on the practice field and do not play until they are good enough.

If Cody Williams` main problem is his body, why is he playing every game instead of taking some time off working on his body? Why not have him play some games and then assign him to the gym with some trainers for a couple of weeks and then play some more games?

Cody and all the other youngsters around the league have many years ahead of them and I can`t see why the most important thing for their development at the very beginning of their careers should be getting hammerd and used to the 82 games schedule

Because playing basketball is more important for development than a weight room. He can do weights in the off season

The Kings last night had three players in their rotation that played in the GLeague earlier in the week so it's not like he would be playing against total stiffs in that setting.

I know this is the American way, but too me this is just the lazy answer. If "playing basketball" always the best way for young prospects to realize their potential? I think it is pretty clear that this is not always the case.

It is....

Does he need to get stronger? Of course, but he can lift weights in-season (and I'm sure he does). Playing is always the most important. You dont become a good basketball player in the weight room. It's going to take years and year for Cody's base to build and removing him from basketball to focus on weights isnt going to significantly speed that process up enough to offset the harm that not playing does.

Also, IDK how it's the "American way" when American athletes definitely spend a lot more time in the weight room than European athletes.

Why does it have to be only one of the due at specific times of the year? I just can`t see the logic as to how this is the best way to improve.
I am guilty too of being lazy with my usage of "The American Way". What I mean is that the focus from a very young age seem to be to play as many games as possible. There are other ways to improve your game than to play competitive games. I think a mixture is needed and espcially for young guys who are far from ready for NBA basketball.

Playing Cody in NBA games where he clearly is losing more confidence by shooting air balls from three isn't helping his growth. Send him to the g League.

Because building a strong base requires a lot of fatigue accumulation that when added onto the rigorous NBA schedule, makes it quite hard to do both at an optimal level, and both will surely impede each other (plos you are probably incurring a much more significant rate of injury if you are lifting as heavy and playing NBA games). In the off-season guys arent traveling to near the degree as they are in-season so they can really focus on building their base. I'm 99% positive most players lift in-season, but you arent going to make the same gains as you can in an off-season. That's why it takes years and years along with phsyical maturation to see big changes in player's physiques.

You become a better basketball player by playing basketball. The NBA season is now, so if he can play in the NBA games, his focus should be playing in NBA games and learning. European players play a lot of games, they just player better games because of the AAU system vs the club system.

Cody is the weakest (in more ways than one) NBA rookie playing rotation minutes I've seen in at least 10 years. I mean he sticks out like a sore thumb. People laugh at Bronny, but I'd say he's farther along than Williams. They both got to the League because of their family connections, though.

I really can't say what the right path is here. The problem is that Cody doesn't even look like an NBA prospect and that doesn't just fix itself. Can't shoot, can't guard, doesn't hustle, is nothing special as a passer and has a terrible motor. He makes rookie Keyonte look like a generational talent.

I'm still pretty excited about Cody. He is already a good defender and once he gets some strength he could be a great defender. He's smart enough that I think he'll eventually figure out what he needs to do to stay on the court on offense.

Unfortunately I could see him being a guy that doesn't put it together until his second contract. He's got such a long ways to go that it could take longer than what we are willing to be patient with.
