What's new

Sloan is back

Yep, Corbin is getting another contract after this one. Look for Ty to eventually be the longest tenured coach in the NBA.

If you saw Ty's press conference when he was being introduced as the HC, you'll notice Gail Miller saying something along the line of we've had Sloan for so long, and here's hoping Ty will be with us for a very long time. (sorry can't find that video anymore).

Couple of thoughts about this.

1. I wonder if the job title was made up so Jerry could wear his John Deere hats without any flak from the NBA.

2. This is going to be Coach Corbin's make-or-break season. He sometimes complained about the bigs? Alright, they bring in one of the best of all time to teach them. There was some questions about his rotations and play calling? Fair enough, so they bring in one of the respected coaches of all time to "advise" Ty. Not to mention they have gone out of their way insist the Jazz are Ty's team.

The team had enough talent last year to make the playoffs, but just fell short. A lot of people, from fans to experts, put that on the coach. The Jazz are, if nothing else, trying to be fair about it and give Ty a chance to succeed. But the onus is on the HC. If the Jazz fall short again, I have little doubt Ty will be gone.

I have plenty of doubt that Ty will be gone, unless he manages to post the worst record in the league (maybe even not then = #1 draft slot). Jazz are all about loyalty and tradition, way more than winning.

I had a lot of serious problems with Corbin and his decisions as well as the teams preparedness and awareness of short clock situations (that's just something that even I can notice), but what really really killed the Jazz was that the team seemed pretty disinterested a lot of the time. I don't care how good Corbin was, he wasn't going to get to the playoffs with a team led by players who didn't care. Many players, Paul Millsap chief among them, clocked out after the all-star break.

Well, that is one of the chief jobs of a HC, motivation. Now, granted there is only so much he can do, but that is part of his job. If Sap clocked out, why did he continue to start? The HC can bench players if he so chooses.

Along those lines, I think it was one of the playoff games where Pops yanked all his starters early in the first quarter because they were stinkin. Did Ty ever do that, with all the horrendous starts the Jazz got off to? No. And thus Sap knew he could clock out and not hurt his standing.

I think Corbin is here to stay. Unless there is a misdemeanor, signs are that he'll be with the Jazz for a very very long time.

Oh oh, I got it: Someone needs to slip a mickey into Ty's gatorade and then we can get him pulled over for a DUI and bingo, no more Ty! The Miller' have zero tolerance for that sort of thing.

Agree. The only change he made in the starting lineup was to put Hayward back and move Marvin to the 2nd unit. How many times did the starting unit find themselves down by 10 or more in the 1st quarter? Corbin could have benched Millsap, Jefferson or Foye, especially when it was evident Randy had simply run up against Father Time and lost. Foye was gassed and could have greatly benefited from reduced minutes. And every time a young player outperformed the vets, he was then benched (Kanter after his 20/20, Favors after 23/15, Burks after playing very well at PG alongside Foye).

I think there's a HUGE jump from being an assistant to head coach. In any sport, look how many excellent assistant coaches, offensive/defensive coordinators, whatever you call them, are FANTASTIC assistants but lousy head coaches. Sloan might be able to help Ty take a step back, reassess what he needs to focus on most as a head coach. After all, Jerry went through some of the same growing pains. He failed miserably in Chicago in his first head coaching job.

Agreed with this.

I haven't been one of Ty's fan and have been vocal about this. But I do also want someone who can grow with the team and also understands these young guys we'll be bringing in.

Fingers cross Ty can improve a bit more this season...

This team is going to stay borderline for years if we keep going back to square one. Corbin will ask Sloan for advice n keep all the youth hanging on the bench. Mehhh.

Loyalty? Just sounds like the Jazz don't have the balls to win a championship.

And that's why KOC and Lindsey have to make sure there is no one older than 27 on the roster (Marvin and DeMarre).

If what you are saying is true, then Al and Paul will be back this fall.

And Ole Jer can school him up on that all-world defensive system he had some more.

Yup, the Jazz value comfort and loyalty and familiarity more than talent and winning.
