What's new

So I want to talk about the Mormons

So let me ask this. Why Mormons believe that Joseph Smith visions and Book of Mormon is any better ( or more believable ) then Bible, Quran, Torah, NWT and so on? Why would non religious person who is looking to chose one of the religions should believe Book of Mormon and not the Quran for example? Why Mormons claim that Muhhamad is not a prophet ( I agree with them here) of God but Joseph Smith is?

The only Jason Smith that I know is not a prophet.

There are a million theories but this one makes no sense. Smith wasn't involved with the free mason well after the BOM was published and the church as already setup.

I know that his brother was already a Freemason and possibly his father? The theory I am familiar with posits that Hyrum provided Joseph with the writings.

I believe the Bible to be the word of God.
As for the others, I've never read or studied them to judge. That would be left to each person to decide. From what I hear, those other books you used as an example contain many good things in them that would help us be better people.

There is also the possibility that others were inspired by God but not called to be prophets. Maybe Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Mohammed...were inspired

With my personal experience and study of both LDS teachings and things that are anti-LDS, I can not, and will not deny it. Joseph Smith was either an incredible savant like liar, or a man of god. I find him to be the later. With that said, I think religion looks weirder and weirder the more civilized society becomes.

I've said this before on JF and this seems a reasonable time to bring it up again. I once spoke with a man whose dad was a scholar for the LDS church had spent the better part of his life studying Joseph Smith. This scholar explained to his son that after decades of research on Joseph Smith that he had found enough evidence that someone could use to prove that he was a true prophet of God. He also explained that he had found enough evidence that could be used by someone to show that he was not a prophet. The scholar explained to his son that after all his years of studying the prophet, it still came down to a personal choice; it was still up to the scholar to choose for himself whether or not he believed Joseph Smith was a prophet.

For what it's worth, the scholar told his son that he made the concious decision to believe that Joseph Smith was a true prophet.

Some of this stuff is cheesy but this shows exactly what Joseph did if he truly did make it all up.

Has there ever been any dispute whether J. Smith even wrote the BoM? I mean, what if he lifted it from someone else? I look at that list and Occam's Razor screams at me, "The guy didn't write it."

Just curious, I'm ignorant here.

Here's a question for non-members.

Is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of non-members here in Utah go out of their way to demonize the LDS Church? I mean, I get that people don't/won't believe in it, but what I don't get is why people go out of their way to make it seem like it's so terrible, evil, etc. That's why I stopped reading comments on FB News pages because people would make anti/ignorant/rude/hehepeepeecaca comments about the LDS church, regardless if the article had to do anything about religion. Why so much hate?

I'm just asking because I can't imagine what domination of any kind (other than the WBB Church lol) would have to do to make me go out of my way and mock it/demonize it/hate it. I tell people all the time I will fully support someone that is doing what they believe regardless if it's something I believe.

I like to explain to my non-members friends that although I'm LDS, I don't consider myself part of the "mormon" culture. There's some dumb/ignorant/mean/rude/judgemental things members do, but that's members, not the church. Anyway...rant rant rant away.

You're seeing it right, Archie. Non-LDS folks in Utah (I grew up on 250 S and 11th W in SLC) feel pretty singled out in a lot of situations. We feel that our voice is not only not heard but disrespected in a lot of situations. We feel that many laws are ridiculously naive and ridiculously annoying and are there not because any reasonable person thinks they make sense but because no one in the LDS faith wants to blink first in the "I'm more righteous than you" chicken match that seems to be mandated by God himself.

Along with what Gameface said, I would predict that living in a state were some laws are made tailored to the faith of the majority will inherently make the minority feel left out.

Couple that with some of those (common in EVERY faith) who like to use their piety as a measuring stick will look down on others who aren't-- it just makes for a little tumultuousness.

The plight of the majority. I don't hate Mormons by any means, some of my extended family is LDS and I love them. It's the institution I have issues with. I'm a member of the minority both dal and GF mentioned and it makes it difficult. Most non-LDS have no issues with individuals, it's the LDS religion and its influence. It doesn't speak for us, doesn't really care to, and its in our face everyday.

I love Utah, but some Mormons in positions of power (the entire state govt.) look down on me and my values. It's hard, it makes me angry, and I don't like it.

But I love your yoked out ***, you son of a bitch.
