What's new

Something specific to watch for with Kanter

Nothing so far surprised me about Kanter in last game. His lack of lift and explosiveness was already no news to me but it is just more exposed playing vs NBA talent. He got away with that somewhat vs inferior competition in Eurobasket ( struggled vs contenders) but in NBA he will struggle every game unless he adjusts and learns quickly. He has no left hand or at least he does not trust to use it in game situations ( I saw him making layups and short hooks with left in his predraft workout video, haven't seen so far a single left handed attempt in any of his real games). He needs to learn to pass out of the post if he can't get good shot - he failed to do it yesterday. But I can give him props for trying hard, effort and rebounding well. I was thinking he will play only 10 min a game this season but Okur's trade and numerous blowouts Jazz will be involved opens playing time for him so he should get better and better as he gains experience.

For your sake, I hope you're right and he fails in the NBA. Afterall, this is just a game and it's not worth any fan (even you) to start cutting themselves or becoming suicidal. I'm pulling for ya, guy, and for Kanter to be the busts of all busts .. just hang in there.

AKMVP posts fail to surprise me anymore. Cant believe Im saying this, but I miss Sloanfeld. At least he was entertaining, as far as absurd-homers go.

So serious question. Aren't negreps similar to positives in that you have to spread them around? If they are, AKMVP is really spreading them around based on my negs from him.

And to answer your question, AKMVP (from said negrep), we are discussing Kanter's pros and cons .. don't I have the right to call you out for being a hater, just like sepanol gets called out for being a homer?

How many more games is Kanter allowed to go 1 for 7, missing mostly easy bunnies before we everyone gets mad? Half a season? A whole season? 2 years?

Maybe, at least more than one game? Idk.

To me he needs to just shake off the jitters, and not be afraid of the big boys under the basket. That first possession where he faked out Gasol under the rim, if he had just gone up strong and dunked that bitch he would have drawn a foul too. As soon as he does this (it took Hayward about half the season last year) then it looks to me he will have a real shot to grow as a player into something potentially dominant.

lol, I love how instead discussing weak or strong points of the player somebody turns this into pissing match. Maybe I should stop pointing to obvious flaws of Kanter's game or giving him props for things he does well and just post simply - he sucks, or he is all-star, or he is god, lol.

I am not hater. I am doubter. I could hate O'Connor for making wrong pick but whats to hate about Kanter? He did not ask Jazz to draft him. I even feel sorry a bit for him as there is huge chip on his shoulder for being drafted so high and some unrealistic expectations from fans here. But kid works hard and so far showed me good effort which may turn him into decent NBA player despite his limitations.

The fact that you have not ONCE mentioned that he led both teams in rebounding, when three of the premier rebounders in of the NBA are playing with/against him is where you lose credibility. To respond to the negreps you keep sending my way, we fail to address any point you make, because there is no point in responding to anything you say, if you really are NOT impressed that Kanter had 11 rebounds in ~20 minutes. Sepanol is definitely the only poster who could've predicted Kanter rebounding in the double digits in his season preview, especially against the Lakers. At least with other homers on the board, I can sorta get the sense that they're just trolling. With you, I cannot think of any reason why you perennially suffer from unbelievable confirmation bias. I don't want this to become a pissing match, I am just explaining why I didn't properly "respond" to your post.

Coming into the game I was for sure more on the Kanter Hater side then Homer. Now I'm probably more on the homer side.

Coming into the game I had my little goals for all the players. Kanters was to get at least 10 boards and he did that so I'm happy. His lack of lift scares me but hopefully he will learn to use his body when he goes up for shots as well as he does using it to box out. By put backs and free throws alone he should be able to get 10 points per game rather easily I'd think. Once the game slows down for him and he learns how to pass the ball a little quicker he will be a very nice player.

Kevin Love aint exactly a hopper, so I think he will be fine.

I agree that his lack of lift is concerning but there is another player that I would point to that has no lift either. Luis Scola. I am not saying that Kanter has the same offensive ability that Scola has but he has a similar game. As soon as Kanter learns how to use his body to protect the ball while going to the rim/creating space, he will be a great weapon on this team. When thinking about Scola keep one thing in mind, he entered the NBA when he was 26 or 27. Kanter is entering the NBA at 19. Give him time to develop and he will be a player that Jazz fans are happy to have around.

Good post. Also, it's not like Kanter doesn't already have an offensive game. He just has to let the game slow down for him, get his confidence up, and we'll see it start to emerge soon enough.

After last night I'm not sure if he'll be matched up on them but I was curious to see Kanter matched up on Love, Zach Randolph and Kendrick Perkins and those type of physical players.

I am glad you said what I meant to. +1

Couple question for people who have watched Kanter since birth.

1. Where is the mid-range game? I feel like it would improve our offense a lot if he at least acted like he was thinking about shooting it. I know he can shoot because he has a pretty FT form and I see him draining them. If he could start hitting 15-20 footers that would really open up his offense and the team's offensive flow.

2. What the hell is that thing he does with the ball when he gets it at the elbow then starts to spazz chest the ball in and out repeatedly?

1. You really should ask Corbin. I've already asked, waiting for an answer.

2. This is too funny, I can't even think to answer!

About being Kanter homer... I say I am a homer but actually it is just a joke, I have never been a homer for anybody nor anything. I am just a strong supporter of this kid. I am just enjoying his career for some years. He lives a dream and I am gladly watching him. And I will continue to support him as a fan of him and a fan of the Jazz. I hope he achieve his ultimate dreams.

Now about Kanter... I am gonna sin and quote from one of my old post. Don't judge me. It's just tiresome to write in english for me.

Ok, first of all I am Turkish, plus I said that I'm a Enes homer in my first post on this board. So you can just ignore this post if you want to.

Here is my toughts. Believe it or not, I say Enes is special.

I've seen lots of big guys like Okur, Gasol bros, Dirk, Kaman, Robert Traylor aka tractor(RIP), Zaza, Gortat, Bargnani, Turiaf and tons of euro bigs and Enes from close distance(not on court). The thing is when you see Enes you just say wow and feel so weak(actually pathetic). I mean he is like made of stone. He is not extremely ripped and definetley not bigger than ones I've mentioned before but he just looks very very strong. I doubt he has got any soft tissue in his body including his internal organs. His massive body can produce great power along with his very high motor, very high velocity and agility for his size. And I can't imagine his strenght a few seasons later from now, Nba is the best place to gain more mass and strenght imo.

And the actual amazing thing about him is not his rare body but his talents. When you have a shooting touch as soft as turkish delight with those creepy hands then I say you are special. And I say you are special when you bang and figth like crazy and make your opponents bones scream in rebounding and positioning but also are able to do smooth turnarounds, all kind of hooks, effective up and unders, fakes, quality layups, finger rolls, putbacks and tip-ins, mid range jumpers and even threes. I've seen all this moves by him in many occasions. Of course he is not perfect in all those moves but he is well above average to perfect and very effective. Another rare thing is that he has always had great stamina, you know power and stamina don't get along well most of the time. I think there is no reason to be pessimistic about his future considering all these aspects of his game with his age(still not 20) and his wonderfull workh ethic. And I believe he is a good learner too.

Now let me be honest about his weaknesses. Actually he is not really weak in these things but he should be a lot better in these aspects of the game to be a big player in NBA.

1) Help defense : He has all the tools to be a very good help defender.

2) Passing : Especially against double team defense he should be better at passing.

3) Screening : Considering his size and agility he'd be better be one of the bests in the league.

4) Standing Vertical and Standing Dunk : He can jump but not while just standing. There won't be easy layups in NBA.

5) Pick and Roll Offense : He seems somewhat late to roll inside.

6) Pick and Pop : Actually I believe he will be very good at this naturally. But he needs a little bit playing time with Devin Harris. Dwill would be great by the way.

7) Left Hand : Definetely needs to work on this.

8) Blocking : This is probably his only real weakness. But I am hopeful because he has tremendous timing in rebounding and I believe timing is a key factor in blocking.

9) Self-confidence : Actually he may need to reduce his self-confidence a bit. I just don't want him to loose his work ethic.

10) Free Throws : He is above average free throw shooter for a big man. But it would be perfect if he increase his percentage to eighties because he will draw tons of fouls.

11) Dribbling : This would be an extra asset to him but also would be very valuable. He has the range to pump fake and go to an easy layup or dunk or draw a foul. Imo even Memo did that occasionally and was effective(was very weird though).

Ok, these are my toughts about him and his game. I believe he is a special player and can be an allstar or even a superstar.

Buuuuuttt, I just believe... Unfortunately, and like everyone else, I really don't know what happens in short and long term.

I am just one of those guys who prefers being positive and hopeful.

Just as a guess I can say he will be good from the midseason and finish the season with 5-7 rbs, 8-14 pts for about 14-20 minutes per game. Then once he begins to feel the NBA and finds his game he will dramatically increase his numbers and his game.

I may add just one thing. It will be a key factor for Enes to develop a polished face to rim game.

All in all I am not worrying one bit about Enes and his game.

I gave him props for rebounding, reread my posts please. And Murphy got 11 reb as well. Am I impressed with it? Somehat yes, but we already knew rebounding is his strongest part of the game so it was not shocking discovery. Now lets see if he impresses us with something I doubt - defense, passing, mid range game, setting screens, left hand, pick and roll, pick and pop, general game IQ, etc.

i know a player who has all those skills, his name is Jonas V.He plays in EuroCup avaraging 6.17 rebounds(ranked 27th in eurocup),8.5 points(ranked 125th) and ranked 58th in points/rebounds/asists overall.Maybe Toronto would trade him if we give them kanter,Bigal and favors, what u think?

just kiddin dude :)

Quite honestly, I expect better from you. Most of your posts seem to be in the vein of "I told ya so", and after only one NBA game. One of the biggest knocks on Enes was his lack of playing time against real competition. Rookie mistakes and nerves are natural, So I just don't get the comments of how you're not giving him the rookie curve, and judging him the same as you judge vet players. That makes zero sense. None. In his first real test aginst the big dogs, I was quite happy with what I saw. When the term "project big man" is used, you never know what you're going to get.

I saw enough last night to be convinced our 3rd round pick is going to be a contributer sooner, rather than later. No doubt he has his flaws, but it looks to me like he's already learning to compensate, and a few choke jobs under the rim don't concern me considering the circumstances. He'll get better.

JV may still end up being the better player, but I don't care as long as our #3 draft pick pans out. After last night, I'm feeling pretty good about the fact that he's good enough to get consistent minutes, and we shouldn't have to worry about him being sent to the D-league or stuck in a suit.

Great post. +1

right now Enes is at 8th place in total rebounds which is more than good, and 4th place in RP48(actualy first 2 guys played less than 3 min)

among rookies,he is ranked first in total rebounds and 5th in points/rebounds/asists
