Stephen King Thread

So, I've been reading a ton of Stephen King recently. I read the whole Dark Tower Series (the 7 main books. I haven't read the Wind Through the Keyhole yet...I'm just not ready to be done with Roland and his katet, and reading that will end the story). Also, the Dark Tower ended perfectly. Loved the ending. I listened to the Mercedes Killer Trilogy, and that was ok. I just finished Dolores Clairborne, which was interesting, but I didn't like how there wasn't a real point to it. No bad guy. Just the story of how a lady is driven to kill her husband.

Anyhow, I just stared The Stand and It.

Pennywise...holy, sweet mother of the son of the grandest. I've seen the movies...but...wow. That dude is terrifying. And I haven't even really gotten started on the story yet. All Pennywise has taken is Georgie and Adrian...and ate his freaking heart. Holy crap.

Another interesting thing I've noticed is that a lot of these books are written 20+ years ago. In some ways it's awesome how far we have come as a society with some of the social issues out there...in some ways it's sad how we still have some of the same problems. BUT, it is almost comforting to read through some of the political turmoil being presented (not as a main theme, just a sentence here or there) throughout some of the stories.

Why?

Because, 20+ years ago, they were debating the same things we were, and they were talking about the end of the world and the end of the US, just the same we are...and yet, here we are, better than we were then, but still whining about the same stuff.

Ha ha. Eternal progression, right?

Anyways, am loving It. And it's crazy reading The Stand and watching how quickly a virus can just wipe out a nation. So shocking...yet, it could happen. Crazy.

I hate Pennywise. I saw part of the movie when I was younger and I have not read or watched anything about him since.

Edit: Read "The Mist". it is one of his short stories and I loved it. It is in the book Skeleton Crew and is the first 130ish pages. Also now published as a stand alone. Got made into a movie that was ok, I guess.

I thought Pennywise was bad in the movie...he is a cute cuddly bear in the movie compared to what he is in the book...and I'm only 1/8th of the way through the book. He is chilling.

"Everyone floats down here"

chills...

I'll look into the Mist next.

Tommyknockers is fantastic. Needful things. Under the dome.
Some more dark tower stuff.... insomnia, the talisman, black house.

You got lots of reading to do.

My favorite King book is Cell by the way, though most don't like it as much as me.

Yes, the mist is good.

Also one of his newer books is called Revival and it's amazing. Stands up to anything he has ever written. Probably the best and scariest ending of any of his books.

I think we had a Stephen King thread a while back.

My assessment of King is pretty darn good. Some great stuff, some crappy stuff, some in between. Prolific writers rarely hit the mark every single time.

I started it, haven't finished it yet. Good to know it ends well. IMO that is one of King's weak points. He can paint a beautiful picture with words then get so caught up in it he doesn't finish it well. Like an old guy on viagra.

I agree. I don't like the endings to a lot of his books. To be fair though, endings are tough for most writers imo.

The same day I watched "It" I, I was 8 or 9, my basketball fell down a sewer. No way in hell I was going to go down there. Told my parents a car ran over my ball so I could get a new one.

I would stay away from any sewer that could swallow a freaking basketball.

Shoot. I've got to remember that. Thanks.

So, I'm reading "The Stand" and this lady walks in this morning...coughing up a storm. Just hacking away, deep, productive, flemmy coughs...

Yeah, it's begun. We are all going to die.
