Stupid Pet Peeves

That is not entirely true, but I agree with your cultural POV. However, makeup has been a part of humanity since recorded history and we don't know when it actually originated. Your example of differences between cultures is explained by traditional evolution, where species start to differentiate. But sure, humanity is different from lower intelligence species, who often learn behavior due to culture all the same.

by the way, does this have anything to do with putting lipstick on a pig???

LOL

There's an easy test to check if this is cultural or biological. Do biologically Indian children raised from a very young age by US parents use make-up in ways Indians do or in ways Americans do, and vice-versa? I'll admit I have not read any studies, but my guess is kids learn to use make-up according to where they were raised, not where their ancestry is from.

I think this would at minimum have to factor in who the foreign woman is trying to attract. However, makeup is meant to enhance attractive features and you can't change facial structure so I doubt your study would be anything but a mixed bag.

Also, I thought about your prior question about a lips study and it turns out caucasians have the lowest upper:lower height ratio, so I think it's safe to say presenting fuller lips is cross cultural a bit. This may explain why some caucasian males have an Asian woman fetish (highest ratio and volume in both lips).

The above reminds me - when did we as a society decide that women are naturally ugly and cannot be seen without makeup? Women have been conditioned to admire other women who never leave their house without their "face" on. There are those who brag that even their husbands have never seen them without makeup (which causes me to think their marriages are bizarre). Those of us who have decided that our everyday faces are just fine for everyday endure comments like "you'd be so much prettier if you wore makeup," etc. So I have to make sure I don't look like myself to be acceptable to society? What a screwed up world we live in.

But yeah, don't put it on in the car, or at least wait until a red light.
I mean, just imagine this woman without makeup.

Guess the reason I've never been "star struck" is I've seen many celebs who are considered beautiful without make-up and many are pretty plain. I've often told others I could just go to a mall on a typical Saturday and pick out 50 women who are just as beautiful as celebs if you only let those stars spend 30 mins putting on makeup (or none at all) instead of hours a day in the makeup chair with professionals before a photo shoot or filming.

My newest pet peeve is aisle displays in supermarkets. ***-freakin' damn. Two carts can't even pass each other anymore. You don't need to put bananas in front of the cereal. And "end caps" are just fine for store specials. And what if you need to get something off the shelf that's behind those displays jutting out into the aisles? I once knocked off a ton of stuff from one of those displays trying to get something. Just left the aisle a mess; didn't give a damn.

And what's with stores now expecting you to be the bagger? I'm paying for groceries. Staff your store or I'll just wait for the cashier to do it. Or pay me extra to do your damn job. Don't expect me to be a store employee. I mean the lines are now so damn long (even on "off" hours) the stores almost force you to use self-checkout...unless you have nothing better to do with your afternoon.

When you take your keys out of your pocket and some change comes out with them. All. Over. The. Ground.

Okay, you've convinced me with some valid points. I'll back off a bit on my "women hate themselves" stance and go with the "women are competing for men and it is in their nature" stance more often. It's true that if I was trying to get and keep a man or woman, I'd wear makeup more often than I do just because it is part of the game. I suppose I fight those impulses now because I'm old and don't care, but it isn't right to think all women should feel the same way. Who can fight evolutionary psychology and fertility urges after all?

As near as I can tell, this is where this thread went off track.

Haven't you learned that men can't rationally deal with this topic?

Men don't comprehend ideas like "fight those impulses" and "fertility urges", imo. oh, that "o" is "observations"

and that's my pet peeve.

Having to take out laptops at the airport for x-rays.

tell them that your computer uses dental office technology, and that it will rot their teeth if they x-ray it.

I haven't been on an airplane since they set up those checkpoints. It's nobody's business who I am or why my teeth are platinum. Busibodies. My #2 peeve.

This has been said before in this thread, I am sure multiple times, but people not knowing the difference between "regime" and "regimen". Today heard it multiple times on NPR while they were discussing the Trump/Kim meeting. I would think journalists would know better.

I just watched "My Fair Lady" all over again. Look, every cultural niche develops their own linguistic markers.... new words, new meanings, unique accents and pronunciation shifts. I know. I took a class in college.

media culture does not use the word Trump in any sentence without the modifier "regimen" because their daily assigned talking points amount to a cultural/workplace regimen, and it's just too much to ask that journalists should not know that getting the spelling or pronunciation within a single letter or syllable is good enough for government work.

You've had some dumb posts, but this one is up there.

cars with flags on them - today I saw one on the highway with such a huge flag on its roof, it looked like it needed to be raised and lowered with a pulley system

Can you a "known traveler number" so you're eligible for TSA Pre-check (or whatever it would be called where you live)?

Not at all familiar with those things here in NZ.. admittedly I'm not the most travelled person.. haha.. but it seems no matter who you are you still have to go through those checks...

Australia's even worse.. very strict whenever I have to go through Sydney...

OK, my new pet peeve....idiot parkers

1. Those who insist on backing in to parking places. It takes twice as long, they have to either go the wrong way or pull past the spot, swing wide and interfere with cars going the RIGHT way. And 95% of these idiots back in crooked, which sometimes means the parking spot next to them is rendered unusable.

2. Big-*** SUVs parking in compact spaces. C'mon, you idiots know you're parking insanely close to the car on your right. And I don't feel one bit guilty for kicking the hell out of your fender when I was forced to crawl in from my passenger side. You deserved the dent, *******. Find a bigger spot and walk a few more yards, you lazy SOB.

You could have worded this rant a whole lot better.

I think this would at minimum have to factor in who the foreign woman is trying to attract.

The question would be whether they are using make-up to attract anyone at all, as opposed to other reasons. It's our western view that associates make-up with sexual signaling.

I have doubts about putting so much into an attribute.
