Summer League: Jazz vs. Magic Wednesday 3 pm MST

I like what I've seen out of Kevin Murphy thus far. He looks like he could be a really good Spurs role player, like Danny Green, to me. Seems to have a fairly high Bball IQ and is adjusting to playing off-ball quite well.

Yes agree. His shot looks pretty good.

I'm still hesitant as to whether his athleticism is there for the NBA level of play though... he seemed to struggle to get himself lose and open at times (even in Summer League).

He's not that quick, and certainly not strong or even long.

Brian T. Smith: Will be interesting to see Kevin Murphy in real Jazz sets. Has a nice, smooth stroke. But nowhere near as athletic as Burks and smaller.
David Locke: Halftime Jazz 37 Orlando 33- if u r watching tape delay later tonight 2nd quarter is worth missing to be with family
Evan Dunlap: Oddity in Magic/Jazz: at half, teams have combined for 10 assists. 10 different players have 1 each.
David Locke: Jazz start Ahearn, Burks, Graham, Evans and Kanter in the 2nd half
David Locke: I am really watching the Evans v. Nicholson match-up closely. Want to see Evans deal with size
David Locke: Enes Kanter is crushing Kyle O'Quinn and he should !!!!
Evan Dunlap: Magnum Rolle checks in for Kyle O'Quinn, whom Enes Kanter has soundly outplayed in this game. Kanter's too big
Brian T. Smith: Jazz again being led by second-year kids Alec Burks, Enes Kanter. Up 47-35 against Magic. Burks with 11, Kanter near double-double (10, 7).
David Locke: Wow - Kanter knocks pass into post away for turnover and then outruns everyone down floor and earns 2 free throws on fast break
David Locke: Nicholson just put Jeremy Evans on roller skates in the post - so hard for Jeremy at 210 pounds. Not sure what the answer is
David Locke: Yes I just gave Jeremy 15 to 20 extra pounds it was supposed to be humor but didn't translate
David Locke: Jeremy Evans with an awesome run down from behind block just as Magic player is about to dunk - Watch for on local TV tonight
Brian T. Smith: Jeremy Evans has woken up practice gym inside Amway Center. Backdoor alley-oop slam, then a near nasty putback dunk before he was fouled.
David Locke: Ahearn takes the role of Earl Watson - alley opp to J Evans
David Locke: Jeremy Evans just made three straight plays that very few players in the entire NBA could make - he has a unique talent.
David Locke: Make that 4 plays by Evans that almost no other NBA player can make - BOINGY !!!!
David Locke: The question for Evans future is can he make enough of those plays that it outweighs the time were his lack of weight is an issue
David Locke: Kevin Murphy hits another jumper off a curl at the free throw line - needed rhythm dribble -needs to lose that
Evan Dunlap: Jazz 60, Magic 51 after three. Nicholson, O'Quinn, Liggins, and Harper have seen their minutes cut. 3rd game in 3 days.
David Locke: End of 3 quarter Jazz lead it by 60-51 - It is obvious the Jazz have 4 NBA players on the floor - Magic might have 1
Brian T. Smith: Best game by Kevin Murphy this week. Burks, Kanter, Murphy have hit double-digits in scoring, led by Burks' 13.
David Locke: Kevin Murphy is playing a lot of minutes with 4 guys that aren't going to play in the NBA - harder to do
Evan Dunlap: Enes Kanter (I think; my view was obstructed) just ate a Ryan Thompson dunk attempt alive. Orlando down 9 with 2:37 to go
Brian T. Smith: Jazz's Earl Watson has watched entire game from Utah's bench. Sitting next to DeMarre Carroll.
Brian T. Smith: Final: #UtahJazz 79, Orlando Magic 75. Jazz led by Kanter's 12 points, 12 reb. Burks with team-high 15 points. Nicholson co-game high 16.
David Locke: Jazz win 79-75 over Orlando go to 2-1 in Summer League. Crystal clear who the NBA players were

Kanter 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 20 pounds.

"He’s ahead of schedule [despite] what people say. It’s just everybody wants instant gratification," Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor said. "We talked about it being a two- or three-year deal, and that’s where we’re at. We’re patient with it. Now, that doesn’t mean we’re not going to push him. But it’s part of the process."

I'm watching the game right now, and watching Murphy, I don't think he will be a great scorer. If he's going to make an impact in the league and with the Jazz, he needs to become a feared three point shooter like Korver is and hit the J off the curl. He doesn't seem to be that athletic, more of a one trick pony in the NBA, but as a second round pick I'll take what I can get.

Enes doesn't need to be our go-to scorer on the block. Just defend, rebound, and bang, my man. If he develops into a 12-14 ppg guy, I'll be pleased with that.

He needs to develop a jumper. He can then be a bigger, bruisier version of Haslem eventually. Forget low post scoring. Favors can take care of that.

I got to watch this game last night and here are a few observations.

-Jeremy Evans is a better athlete than any else on the floor. He just rose up and dunked everything. He even got some time at SF. Hopefully this continues so he can eventually see some minutes.

-Nicholson for Orlando plays like a tougher Antwan Jamison. He has a old-man's post game and seems to do almost everything well.

-Murphy looks like a fringe NBA player to me. He has okay size and okay athletic ability. He uses screens well and can hit open mid range jumpers. He isn't explosive going to the rim and he struggles to get by people. Defensively he is okay- he play smart hedging people to help defense. Honestly, Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver, CJ Miles, Josh Howard and Raja Bell brought more to the table. He is okay at several things and only has one NBA skill-coming off screens for jumpers.

-Burks needs to know when to pass the ball in pick and rolls. Though in his defense Kanter never rolls at the right time or at the right angle. I don't see a major difference in his game other than he is stronger.

-Kanter is getting more comfortable and all this playing time is helping him find his NBA niche. None of his individual plays are surprising but he is making fewer bad decisions.

-Stockton may really be able to play in the NBA. His passing ability and court vision is so much better than our other options. His defense has been very surprising. If his 3pt shot was a little more consistent I think he could be a 3rd point guard and eventually a backup with a floater.

Is Murphy really shorter than Burks?

Yes and no. Murphy and Burks heads are about the same height. Burks is much thicker right now and looks taller. But more importantly Burks has much longer arms and is a much better athlete.

Burks is 6'6" with a 8'7.5" standing reach.

Murphy is 6'6.25 with a 8'3" standing reach.
