Summer League: Jazz vs. Magic Wednesday 3 pm MST

-Murphy looks like a fringe NBA player to me. He has okay size and okay athletic ability. He uses screens well and can hit open mid range jumpers. He isn't explosive going to the rim and he struggles to get by people. Defensively he is okay- he play smart hedging people to help defense. Honestly, Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver, CJ Miles, Josh Howard and Raja Bell brought more to the table. He is okay at several things and only has one NBA skill-coming off screens for jumpers.

He'll have a hard time staying in the league long term because of his lack of elite athleticism, and explosiveness. He is showing an ability to catch, and shoot though. If he can score without the ball always in his hands that will help a lot. It will be interesting to see how, and if he developes.

I got to watch this game last night and here are a few observations.

-Jeremy Evans is a better athlete than any else on the floor. He just rose up and dunked everything. He even got some time at SF. Hopefully this continues so he can eventually see some minutes.

-Burks needs to know when to pass the ball in pick and rolls. Though in his defense Kanter never rolls at the right time or at the right angle. I don't see a major difference in his game other than he is stronger.

-Kanter is getting more comfortable and all this playing time is helping him find his NBA niche. None of his individual plays are surprising but he is making fewer bad decisions.

-Stockton may really be able to play in the NBA. His passing ability and court vision is so much better than our other options. His defense has been very surprising. If his 3pt shot was a little more consistent I think he could be a 3rd point guard and eventually a backup with a floater.
Good observations.

Yes, Evans looked very good. But remember, this is summer league. He gets abused by bigger players and can't guard SF's in the big leagues. Garbage minutes and highlight dunks: that's his niche. But what's wrong with that? We need 13 players on the roster. He's a great guy with a fantastic attitude, who enjoys doing the Jazz clinics. I think he's already exceeded his expecations - and ours.

Murphy was a 2nd-rounder. He beats the odds just by making the team. What does he bring that RB, KK, CJ, JH and RB don't? A minimum, non-guaranteed contract and ZERO expectations for minutes. With Marvin, Hayward and Burks, we already have 3 wings who should each get 30 mins. Just need a couple more who can give the team spot minutes. Murphy and Carroll fit the bill. Kevin needs to extend his range out to the 3. Seems to have the form, but just not the consistency. Do that and he can find a niche as a situational shooter.

What a difference a day makes...Burks was absoluetly turrible in Game 1, but has had two very good games thereafter. I think he's proved he SHOULD be a major part of the rotation. Whether he starts probably depends on how the Jazz see Hayward. IMO, Jazz should start Marvin and Hayward, with Burks coming off the bench. That gives Alec the most opportunites to score. Otherwise he's competintg with 4 others for touches. Let Burks play the Ginobli/Maggette role for the Jazz.

Kanter: not ready to be a starter yet. Has limited offensive skills. I agree he's making progress, though. Probably should play around 20 mins/per. This is a tough one. Trade Al and it means Kanter has to play 30 mins. Keep Al and Favors and Millsap suffer from reduced minutes. Of course, that's also assuming everyone stays healthy for all 82 games, which is not going to happen. My prediction is Jefferson will be around until at least the deadline and probably all year if the Jazz make the playoffs. I think KOC and Corbin are counting on Kanter to be ready for 30 mins NEXT season.
