What's new

Summer League (overall)

He's with the national team. Earlier he attended the World University Games(A2 national team under age 23 or 24) Now he's preparing for the European Championship in September with the A squad.

I'm really impressed with Archie Goodwin so far. He might be the lowest player in this draft who makes GMs regret passing on him. Including Gobert...

I didn't know he attended A2. He is already getting very experienced. I wonder if he will sign with Cavaliers this year.

Crazy how much Callipari held Goodwin back. He actually looks good now that he isn't playing for UK.

And to make it clear, since it's only summer league the reason I like Archie Goodwin is that he's the first player who adressed a major weakness and showed improvement in that area over the summer. You don't shoot 78% from the NBA 3 pt line against 26% from the college 3pt line when you don't work on it. Even if it's 5 games and the sample size is 2 attempt/game on both stages. His shots were not from the closer corner positions, both C&S and contested ones off the dribble. He simply worked on his game and it shows.
If he showed that shooting touch in workouts and given that he's the youngest player in the draft I'm surprised that he didn't move up.

And I also agree that Phoenix will be a fun team to watch. The good part is I don't even agree right now that their team will be necessarily worse than Utah's given their depth!

PG Bledsoe - Dragic - Marshall
SG S. Brown - Goodwin - M. Lee
SF Butler - Beasley - (Tucker)
PF Scola - Frye - Morris x 2
C Gortat - Len

While that team lacks in elite talent, it will still have a lot of solid players and a more than solid bench. Maybe Bledsoe and Dragic will start alongside, but for natural position reasons I just listed them both as PG. I'd be actually surprised if they didn't get active at the deadline with their 3 expiring contracts(Butler, Gortat, Brown) and Scola who's a savvy veteran who has 1 more year left.

Unconverted Dennis Schroeder assists in Summer League

In case none else counted: 37 "assisted" misses ...35 of which I'd say the miss is 100% on the receiving end. So basically 7 assists/game extra got taken by his teammates not netting open uncontested practice shots.
I hope in regular season he can find more recipients closer to the basket.

Every player has easy assists that are missed.

Of course...But I wanted to put it into context to the amount of games played(5). He avg'd close to 6 assists during summer league. If the missed easy shots and successful ones are comparable that results in a pct of 46% on either open C&S jumper, uncontested set Js and easy opportunities close to the basket.
You hand these passes to someone like Ray Allen and he's going to score on you more often than not...
I think that vid underlines and confirms the laurels Dennis got from the commentators. He was on every "all summer league team" as PG that I've seen. Rightfully so!

Ray Allen fg% .449
46% isn't that bad
I'm sure you could take five games that Stockton played and put together a similar vid.
That being said I reall like the way he manages the d. Schroeder's gunna be tuff.

Ray Allen doesn't score 44.9% on C&S or uncontested shots after having time to set his feet ;) The 44.9 include all the worse looks he takes over the course of the game and doesn't make consistently. Getting assisted like that all the time he'd shoot better. WAYYYYYY better.
But I agree you can do these vids with all the other players too, but it outlines HOW OFTEN they didn't convert those shots. For example Schröder's much scrutinized shot last season was 56% in C&S situations from three point land. And the long shots 2 feet within the 3pt line are range equivalant to FIBA 3pt line. A good C&S shooter converts at higher clips if left open like often visible in the vid.

I was definitely impressed with his composure when the d collapsed on him. Being able to get into the lane and then hit that open man sounds simple, but so many guys would either force a bad shot or just dish to closest teammate.

After watching that I like Schroeder more than Burke. Looked like pretty good PG play to me. Created a lot of opportunities. Moved the ball. Generally looked like he was making the right pass. Most importantly seemed to put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses.

Anyone see it different?

The Hawks had smaller plans for his rookie season when they drafted him. After his summer league performance they asked him to cancel national team attendance where he's supposed to be playing the Euro championships.
Apparently promised him a major role in case he stays in ATL with their coaches and attends full training camp and preseason.
