I see our roster for the season opener looking like this:

Starting PG FA/Burke/'Jerel McNeal or other minimum guy'
Burks / Hayward /Foye or other FA.
Hayward/Carroll(resign)/(Ma. Williams when healthy)
Favors/FA 3rd big Millsap?/Jeremy Evans
Kanter/Favors/FA 4th Big

Neto maybe stashed in Europe.
Gobert will be in the D league or in street clothes- he just isn't ready.

1. Hayward
2. Burks
3. Favors
4. Kanter
5. Burke
6. Carroll
7. Marvin Williams
8. Gobert
9. Jeremy Evans
10. FA 3rd big man(ideally a stretch sort of player)
11. FA backup center
12. 3rd string PG probably a minimum guy
13. Low Cost backup 2 probably Foye

Neto could be the 3rd point guard. Dunno if he is ready. We might be bring Travis Leslie back as a backup up or one of these other guys in the FA camp.

Carroll is a backup because that is where he is the most effective. He changes the game against 2nd string guys. He get into trouble gambling against first team guys.

Starting Burks is more of hope than a certainty.

I hope the FA PG is Calderon.

I don't see Gobert as strong enough to play because he won't be able to rebound. Get him on the strength program and game experience in the D league.

I don't see Jeremy Evans getting a real shot this year either unless he can learn to shoot enough to play the 3.
 
I doubt we get a FA PG as good as Calderon. I see us nabbing a career backup. I also think Burke starts from day 1.

I think Gobert comes over.
 
Question guys--

Jazz now have 2 rookie pgs, Alec Burks the sometimes fill in pg, and Jerel McNeal.

What veteran FA is going to want to step into that situation?

How much are the Jazz going to committ to veteran (years and $$$).

If the jazz sign a veteran pg it will be Jamal Tinsley or the like....a guy on his last leg who realizes he is going to be coaching as much as playing. Is there a guy better than Tinsley available?

The Jazz could also acquire a veteran pg via trade. Is there a veteran pg with one or two years left on his contract that the jazz would want to teach Trey, and is available?

Biggest roster hole I see is a stretch 4 or a pf/sf combo that plays like Marvin was supposed to. A guy who can play 3 and gaurd Durrant or play 4 in a small lineup. I like Jeremy Evans but I'm not sure he is that guy.

IF the Jazz bring back Demarre and start him at the 3, the starting lineup is pretty well balanced (although potentially pretty poor/mediocre):

Favors - Rim protector
Kanter - Offensive hub
Carroll - Perimeter stopper
Hayward - Off ball scorer, glue (and secondary ball handler)
Burke - Offensive hub (primary ball handler)

Not sure how those 5 will hold up physically as starters over a full season, but they could potentially be a unit that punishes you defensively and in transition. Hopefully Burke and Kanter are good enough to squeeze decent efficiency out of the halfcourt offense.

The bench looks pretty weak/thin right now, especially up front with Gobert and Evans. If Foye is brought back, the two guard combo of Burks and Foye, with Marvin manning the 3, might be passable.

Perhaps an argument could be made for signing Josh Smith to play the 3 and 4.

Carroll is a hustle man, not anywhere near a stopper.
 
The Goal this coming season should be to play the young guys and lose so we get a top pick. You guys are talking like the Jazz have a shot at contending. Who cares if guys are ready? Play them and let them learn. Coach them up and inspire them to get better. The team will be better off in the long run if we play the young guys and live with the consequences. If the Jazz bring a washed up PG in to play ahead of Burke then there is no hope for this franchise.

Have you "stay the course" guys learned anything? Being average is not going to get you to the promise land.
 
Well, if the Jazz sign only Foye and Carroll, bring Gobert open, and are open to playing Marvin as a 3/4 off the bench (the full tank scenario), I suppose you could see something like this:

5 - Favors (32) Gobert (16)
4 - Kanter (32) Marvin (16)
3 - Carroll (24) Hayward (16) Marvin (8)
2 - Hayward (16) Foye (24) Burks (8)
1 - Burke (32) Burks (16)

Total Minutes: Favors/Kanter/Hayward/Burke - 32; Marvin/Carroll/Foye/Burks - 24; Gobert - 16.

Marvin's 24 minutes are divided between Kanter/Favors/Evans/Hayward/Carroll while he's out. Evans, Neto, etc. fill in when injuries/matchups/score require.

Is Corbin still the coach? Foye and Marvin combined for more than 120 starts last season. Carroll started 12 times. So, I wouldn't count on Carroll starting ahead of them, if I were you.

it's amazing how people just don't want burks as a starter and coming up with some 6th man crazy ideas

dude is just a great player, not worse for his position than any of core5
 
Lindsay said that Gobert and his agent made it clear they want to be in the NBA NOW. This year. He will be with the team. Also, from what a lot of people are saying, I would almost be surprised if Neto DOESN'T make the team this year. This is what I see:

PG: Burke, Tinsley, Neto
SG: Burks, Foye, scrub
SF: Hayward, Marvin, Carroll
PF: Favors, Marvin, Evans
C: Kanter, Gobert

There is 13 players. Resign Foye, Carroll, Tinsley.

Not ideally, especially if you're measuring "best" by scoring/creating ability (as many do). How players complement each other matters a great deal in basketball. I'd much rather have Hayward at the 2 with a physical 3 (Marvin/Carroll are close enough for now...) and a player who can create from the perimeter off the bench (Burks) than Hayward at the 3 and Burks standing around without the ball in the starting lineup. The two guard combo of Foye/Burks off the bench looked pretty good this year.

Amen to this. Jazz have always said "We need to be competitive" and i belive that translates to "a decent team pays the bills." But there is evidence that a boring fan-year (a boring year like last year for fans as this web site has fully outlined) and the Jazz still are top 10 in attendance. If i were Randy Rigby and KOLindsey, i'd be quite confident that the make up outlined by Green will be AT LEAST as popular for fans. And therefore, this is the year to just play the 13 guys listed and then evaluate the actual talent level of the team members. The only ready to sign/not sign this group is for doing the strategic moves like taking contracts and such for high pick in next years draft, etc. So this is why i'm fine with Tinsley... He's old enough to know he's not part of the "core5-7" and can still be productive enough if needed and be a coach/mentor as well.
