I've had quite a few encounters with moose, both in Utah and Montana. I had one almost stomp my dog in a park in Hamilton, Mt. She was still young and when I started yelling at her, she looked back and forth between the moose and then me, and just panicked and froze. When I realized she was in real trouble, I turned and ran, yelling at the same time. Luckily, the dog got the idea and followed.

I was float tube fishing in quake lake, Mt., and I was able to get about 15 yards from a cow with a tiny calf wading and feeding in the water.. That's way closer than I would ever get to a moose on land, but I was in deep enough water that she would have had to swim after me. She never even flinched, just went on dunking her head to eat the moss.

By far, the coolest thing I've ever seen moose wise, happened when I was bow hunting on a ranch called anshutz. It's on the border of Utah/Wyoming, if you drive up to Evanston, and then drop back down into Utah. Anyway, I was hunting deer when I jumped two big bull moose about 30 yards away. They were both in velvet, and as they ran off through the quakies, they had to tip their heads from side to side to avoid hitting their horns on the trees. It was amazing watching those two huge beasts gracefully sway back and forth as they trotted away.
