The Donovan Mitchell Hype Thread! (repository of highlights and effusive praise)

In DL's last radio interview on 1280 with David James, he compared Donovan Mitchell coming out of college to Russell Westbrook. Westbrook wasn't seen as a PG since UCLA had Darren Collison running the point. Lindsey thinks that Mitchell has similar physical tools to Westbrook and thinks he can work on improving his vertical explosion and 3/4 court sprint speed. He thinks Mitchell has the vision, ball handling and passing skills to play the 1 down the road. Considering how conservative DL normally is in describing his players, I thought that was eye-opening.

The buzz is that the Jazz front office thinks Mitchell will become a real star in the league.

He has good potential. With Hayward having walked for nothing though, the circumstances are right for DL to hype someone more than he normally would. Lot's of season ticket sales on the line.

Not really. Jazz are routinely in the top 3rd of the league for ticket sales. Even during that 4-5 year playoff absence. The stans are not going anywhere because Hayward left.

I'm torn guys... can't decide if DM is the next MJ or if MJ was the first DM.

That's cause Booker is awesome and haywad sucks buts

I want Booker back. We messed up Book... come home.

We might have my all time favorite locker room if we brought back Booker.

Re-watching a few of these Exum highlights, Exum has developed a bit of shiftiness that he didn't used to have. Some slight hesitations that set up his cross-overs and blow-bys. That's encouraging.

- Utah Jazz

1. The Jazz were clearly sad to see Gordon Hayward leave but “We rebounded nicely. Kept Joe (Ingles) and some others on the way (turned out to be Jonas Jerebko, Thabo Sefolosha and Ekpe Udoh). Our defense will carry us, but we might have to work a bit more to create offense. But Rodney (Hood) will step up big time.”

2. They think Donovan Mitchell will be a big time star. “He’s going to be like Dame (Damian Lillard) or CJ (McCollum) with the way he’ll score the ball. We traded up for a reason and that is because this kid has star written all over him.”

3. The Jazz believe Rudy Gobert can carry more offensive responsibility, while remaining the best defender in the NBA.

4. “Ricky (Rubio) is going to help us a lot. We need a little flash occasionally. Sometimes we were too structured. And he’s a great fit with our defen

He must have a full PR agency behind him, right?

His dad works in PR for the Mets.

Doesn't matter. Love the guy. The PR is nice too. Been awhile since the Jazz have had a guy like this. Gobert and Mitchell will be the two "face of the franchise" players for Utah starting right now. Build around those two the best you can. Jazz gonna be a mean, tough team here for the next several years. I LOVE it!

I'd put him in a package for Kyrie.
I wouldn't even do a straight up trade. Donovan will have an immediate impact. Jazz control his rights for 7 years. Kyrie? Utah would be going through the Hayward situation all over again in 2 years. Do the Jazz contend within that window? Because, if not, I doubt Kyrie stays. DL wants team-first, 3&D players. Irving doesn't fit in with the defensive team DL is trying to build.

I think Kyrie is the perfect kind of player to team up with Gobert. You would have a top 5 offensive player and a top 3 defensive monster. An elite option on both ends. Surround them with nice pieces and that might be better than the moneyball approach.

In Irving, you have arguably the best bail out offensive option in the NBA.

When you planning to compete? In DMV's 5th, 6th or 7th years?

Can I ask, is it Mitchell's summer league form that has got everyone so jacked up or his college career?

I just wonder what position he plays. He seems to be more of a swiss army knife and potential elite role player at this stage. Despite chatter on here, I doubt he is a pg. And despite his length, he could be monstered by NBA wings. You don't know what you have in Mitchell. You know what you're getting in Irving. His defensive limitations notwithstanding... Who better to help reduce this negative impact than Gobert? To gain a lot, you have to give up something.
