The Official 2014/15 Tank Watch thread

Sorry for being negative about this, but we really need to lose this one vs DEN.

Starting to look like it might not be in the cards. On the bright side, it's kind of a nice problem to have that we can't even lose by sitting one of our best players. Probably need to sit 2 out of our big 3 in order to tank effectively, and I don't think Utah is willing to do that when they are healthy. It's definitely going to suck if we miss the next piece to the puzzle by one or two spots, which looks a good possibility in this draft, considering our current position.

Realistically, an irreplaceable "piece of the puzzle" isn't going to be available at 9 or 10 in this draft anyway. I'd be surprised if the pick isn't traded for a grown up player at this point.

The difference between 9 and 12 doesn't seem like much but it is. Rationally we should lose this game, but when the game starts I just want us to curb stomp fools.

It would have to be a good vet on a good contract for me to want to trade the pick. If we trade the pick it will be to move up the draft. Getting decent production from cheap contracts will be huge especially since these contracts won't scale up with the new cap. If we get decent bench production out of this pick it will be a big asset to us going forward. It would be short sighted to trade the pick IMO.

This. Drafting Xavier Mchenry at 12 with Hayward and George going 9/10 probably didn't seem like a big deal at the time, either. Obviously nobody can say for sure if this draft will be a similar situation, but I believe there'll be a significant drop off at about 10, depending on who falls.

I think the tiers will be:

Tier 1
Towns
Okafor
Russel

Tier 2
Mudiay
Winslow
WCS

Tier 3
Hezonja
Johnson
Porzingis

Tier 4
Frank the Tank

Then whatever... not a big fan of Oubre (although i get why people are) Looney (don't get it at all) or Turner (I liked him earlier in the year when he was hitting 3s, but at the end of the year his shot looked as ugly as his run).

Dropping to #9 would be huge for us.

Russell
Towns
Mudiay
Okafor
Hezonja
Winslow
Johnson
WCS
(In that order)

I really think it's essential for us to get 1 of those guys, especially 1 of Hezonja/Winslow/Johnson. Drafting at #9 at least gives us a chance to get one of them without having to give up any assets, especially because there are a few prospects (Porzingis, Kaminsky, Oubre, Looney, Dunn, etc) who could go ahead of a guy or 2 in that group. I guess we could package #12 with another asset to move up a few spots to get whoever remains out of that list around #8-10, but I'd rather have the asset than a few meaningless wins (not that any win is actually meaningless, but you know what I mean).

Either way, we are in a great position moving forward. Not being able to lose is a great problem to have, I'd just hate to see us end up with a future rotational player rather than a potential starter just because we will likely be drafting outside of the lottery for the foreseeable future.

I'm done rooting for losses. That ship has sailed.

Go Jazz!!!

Move out of the way or I'll run you over with this bandwagon!! Woot woot!!

You're being emotional and irrational right now... why don't you take 5, have a cuppa and then we can talk?

its about developing a winning culture. **** tanking. if we win the lotto and get a top 3 pick great, if not - who cares. We can either trade the pick or take someone who may fit. We've already got our horses (Hayward, Favors, Rudy, Burks, Hood, Exum, Booker (?)) - time to build around them! This offseason is going to be monumental for us! JAZZ BABY

WEll, even in the draft you mentioned, Bledsoe was taken #18. So it's not necessarily a dropoff from a starter to a scrub as you paint it. And getting a higher draft pick doesn't necessarily mean a better player. Jazz drafted Burks when Kawhi Leonard was available. Giannis or even Schroder would have been a better pick than Trey. There is no reason to go around weeping, wailing and gnashing our teeth over finishing 12th instead of 9th. IF Utah keeps the pick, they're going to get a backup wing or backup big with the pick. They simply take the BPA. And they fill the other need(s) via free agency. Utah's real need, IMO, is at PG. But there is NO ONE in the 9-12 range that could improve the team. I could see the Jazz POSSIBLY trading back and taking Grant for our 3rd PG. Or, more likely, I could see Lindsey trade for a veteran with this pick.

What's the difference between "develop a winning culture" in the last 10 games of the season VS the first 10 games of the season?

What would you rather have?

Great last 10 games (of this season) + #12 pick VS Great first 10 games (of next season) + #9 pick

I want a great 10 games to end the season THEN an even better 10 games at the start of next season. Every game we play successfully with our stars in Quin's gameplan puts us closer to the playoffs next year, which HAS to happen. the #9 guy over the #12 guy really isn't going to mean much in the long run. Hood is probably better than whoever we would get at #9 and we still haven't really incorporated him like we would want. We still have to find time for Burks too. #12 is likely going to be traded or a project, because we have enough youth to be honest. Getting Tomic would be really nice though, because a backup for Gobert is definitely needed.

I disagree that the #9 guy isn't much better than #12 ... Currently DX has Stanley Johnson at #9 and Myles Turner at #12. That is a big jump in talent IMO.

Also remember that year we made the playoffs and got swept by the Spurs? Then remember what happened the very next season?

DL is also done with losing. Look at the moves, he is preparing for a late lottery pick.

The time of losing is over. Jazz wont be in the lottery at least 5+ seasons.

Hope my bandwagon's tires don't leave tracks on your face when I run you over!

If you truly believe this statement is true, what's losing 7 games at the end of a losing season's gonna do?

We're gonna be so good we'll win next 5+ seasons anyway right? LOL ...
