The story behind the Utah Jazz’s front-office shake-up, and why it happened now

I kind of feel bad for the kid. The only person in the entire organization that wanted him is now gone, even his head coach didn't want them to pick him.
I always felt like Favors was coming back last summer. I didn't really doubt it at all.

So I understand why Quin and others in the scouting department got pissed off. They were like - what the hell are we supposed to do with 3 rim protecting big men?

Don't forget all the weird players from foreign leagues that kept showing up like Stanton Kidd, NWG, and William Howard, letting Neto go and keeping NWG, the Green and Davis signings, the Tucker signing and letting players go after solid summer leagues like Willie Reed, George King and Kelan Martin. Plus the organization had to buy the Oni and Brantley picks and last year's draft had to be the cherry on top.

Also, I still believe NWG could have actually been a solid player. Dude had another insane year in Europe after being cut by the Jazz.

The timing of his cut was off too. He seemed like he was figuring things out at the NBA level.

I don't mind it though. Just go get Larkin if we ever need a back-up PG.

LIke, I get not wanting to play Exum much. Dude was a super weird player and just flat out couldnt do a lot of things that normal NBA players can (shoot off the dribble). Goss had talent and ability to play, he just wasnt a great athlete. Why not give him a shot and see if he figures out the athleticism gap? It kind of makes me worried long-term about dudes like Elijah Hughes. Once Quin decides you can't play, do you really have a shot at getting on his good side?

What’s nuts is that this one article might provide more insight in to the inner workings and thought process of the front office than the sum total of everything else we’ve gotten since DL got here.

It makes you wonder who really cut NWG after he scored 15 points in a quarter in preseason vs the Suns. Was that DLs doing or did Quin say off with his head?

Oh yeah, I don't blame anyone in the organization for not liking the pick. I personally think it was an awful pick. All I was saying is that I kind of feel bad for him because he has to play for a team that he now knows didn't want him.

listened to Tony Jones on Checketts's show today; somewhat different emphasis there, despite acknowledging the real (and juicier) rift between Quin and DL:

- Tony was pretty firm that the more important rift than the QS/DL one was the Ryan Smith/DL one (though didn't provide details about the substance of the breakdown, whether basketball personnel/philosophy, management style, or whatever else).

-Tony seems to be preparing Jazz fans for the eventual Ainge regime (not necessarily that he'll take over DL's role directly, though didn't rule that out, but that his impact on Smith is likely to be heavy, whatever his title ends up being).

-both Tony and Checketts quickly dismissed any possibility that Battier is in play for a role with the Jazz -- they've both been told rather directly apparently that that's not something Battier is after

- Spence particularly, though Tony seemed to concur somewhat, suggested strongly that this whole shakeup is really all about Smith -- his desire to be heavily involved as an owner, his fondness for the spotlight, etc. To me this signals that we as fans should prepare for a possibly tumultuous road ahead, with likely a lot less emphasis on long-term continuity. Hope Smith ends up pulling it off successfully.

So…. Many more changes to come than perhaps anyone expects.

I have a suspicion that there isn’t a lot of interest in bringing Conley back.

Yeah, who knows? However Tony pushed back hard (Tony's own opinion) on the suggestion that maybe the Jazz shouldn't prioritize Conley .

Say all you want about Goss, Bolomboy, Brantley, Hanlan or any of those G league/European/Chinese league guys but until any of them can prove it in the NBA one day, Quin has every reason to say he was right.
