The Westboro Baptist Church finds a new low

I am a member of Patriot Guard Riders and have participated at funerals in several states, most recently at the funeral of my own brother-in-law who was killed in a motorcycle accident last summer. The Patriot Guard appear mostly at funerals for military folks to mitigate just this kind of protest by the WBC and other nuts. At my brother-in-laws funeral we had a small group that claimed to represent the WBC and when they were trying to yell out their slogans and use a bull-horn we revved our bikes to drown them out. We also act as "guards" and an honorary procession at the entrance to the church or funeral home to prevent protestors from interfering with the family and other mourners. The Patriot Guard does appear at more than military funerals and should have a presence at this funeral or any where protestors would be, and we will usually appear where we are asked to regardless of the military history or religion or whatever of the deceased and their family. It is all about respect and reverance for the family and the deceased.

Thank you for your service.

Personal opinion; if protesters are using their own voices, fine. If they are using bull horns, they are creating a public disturbance. The bull horns should be confiscated and destroyed.

If I was an unloving, uncaring type, Spray Foam insulation from Home Depot would do a fine job on the bull horns.

These clowns protested at a local funeral here when a soidler died a few months ago. A radio DJ organized a counter protest, which I think is dumb. The best solution is to ignore it. Unfortunately people feel they need to make a big deal about certain things that the media reports. They're not going to change your mind, you're not going to change theirs.

I do enjoy their God fearing message though, but there's better ways to go about it.

Here are some pictures of the patriot guard riders (that is me behind the camera =).

Awesome. You're probably on some government terrorist watch list or something, but still awesome.

LOL wouldn't surprise me. The guy with the big white beard was in the korean war believe it or not. I think he is Methuselah's uncle.

I want to spend my retirement years riding around with a long *** beard and a 18 year old gf riding on the back of my Harley.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Chad Feldheimer again.

well dammit

We had a similar situation in which we were assisting with the funeral of a fallen Afghan War vet. We got information that the wbc was planning on attending and a space was designated in the farthest corner of the cemetary shielded by trees for them to have their "look-at-us" moment. We then learned that a VFW Motorcycle Club was planning on attending as an honor guard. This particular VFW MC happens to attend soldiers funerals throughout the midwest, particularly those in which the wbc has shown an interest. They bring large American flags and shield the mourners from the hate the wbc mongers. Anyway, long story short the wbc cancelled its plan to attend. The VFW MC still arrived to show their support and it was one of the most awe-inspiring things I have ever witnessed. I told one of them (VFW MC members) that they have my support whenever they are back in the area.

this is an awesome story! thanks for sharing. :)

Supreme Court just ruled in their favor, 8-1, with Alito the only dissenter. I guess this means all peaceful defiance of noise ordinances are constitutionally protected as well? What the hell is wrong with the supreme court these days?

It's a tough situation, but free speech must be protected. As far as protecting these WBC asscraps from any kind of retribution, I wouldn't stand up for them.

What? The Court did what they were supposed to do. They ruled in favor of the bad guys so the good guys keep their freedom.

I get reactionary once and this is what I get from the guy who is never serious and constantly talks about my second favorite subject, and the guy who nobody takes seriously.

You know what? I have never thought it smart to go protest at the funeral of someone who has friends who may very well be snipers. Seriously, how long before someone (a former or current soldier who has gun skills) takes matters into his own hands and drops a couple of these losers as they protest? If it did happen, would you be upset? Would anyone care? Would anyone go protest at their funeral saying "God hates people who protest at other people's funerals?" Er, wait...

Repped.

At one of the funerals I participated with the PGR we had to restrain I think it was the cousin of the deceased. He was going to go at the protesters and was simply enraged. I don't doubt that your scenario could possibly play out.

There is freedom of speech, not freedom of consequence.

I even fight for the right for these people to say what they want...

I'm out of rep, but this made me laugh at the end. And I feel kind of guilty of it.

Fox News does right...

Snyder's legal costs could reach six figures, but help is already coming in

Fox News' Bill O'Reilly repeated his pledge. Country music group Big and Rich had already contributed, Snyder's lawyer said.

York, PA - Now that the Supreme Court has decided Westboro Baptist Church had a legal right to picket his son's funeral, Albert Snyder has to reimburse Westboro for at least some of its legal costs.
The bill, which covers things like Westboro Baptist's costs for making photocopies, could balloon to more than six figures.
At the moment, Snyder owes $16,510.80 for the costs of appealing the case to the Fourth Circuit court of appeals. Attorneys for Westboro have filed for additional costs from the 2007 trial in U.S. District Court in Maryland. Those costs are about $100,000, Snyder's attorney, Sean Summers, said during a news conference Wednesday.
And Snyder could owe a tab for the Supreme Court filing, though that hasn't been levied yet, his attorney Craig Trebilcock said.
Supporters are lining up to help pay.
Since before the trial, Snyder and his attorneys -- who have chosen to work for free -- have received thousands of e-mails from all sorts of sympathetic people, Trebilcock said.
"It really touched a nerve with the public that even the attorneys did not expect," he said.
Some support has been monetary. Funds have been donated from a number of sources, including a Web site that asks for donations, www.matthewsnyder.com, to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars, Trebilcock said.
He referred requests for the exact figure to his partner in the case, attorney Sean Summers. Summers' law firm, Barley Snyder, maintains the site, Trebilcock said. Summers could not be reached for comment.
"Right now, we certainly have enough to cover the $16,500," Summers said during the press conference.
Donors to the fund include the country band Big and Rich, which anted up with about $20,000 before the trial began, Trebilcock said.
Additionally, host of Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor," Bill O'Reilly, has offered to pay Snyder's legal costs. A Fox News spokeswoman said O'Reilly will pay the fees out of his own pocket. O'Reilly had previously said he'd pay the $16,500 incurred during district court trial, so it was unclear whether he'd pay more.
Donald Gilliland is among those seeking to help. The surgeon from Oklahoma City, Okla., had been following the case and learned of the decision Wednesday on drudgereport.com.
"The guy (Snyder) saw his son die," Gilliland said. "What they (Westboro Baptist Church) do is blasphemy."
Gilliland lives about 300 miles from Westboro Baptist Church's home in Topeka, Kansas. Gilliland was a doctor at Fort Hood during the Vietnam War. He attends funerals for servicemembers "when I have the time."
He's seen Westboro Baptist Church picketing several funerals. And while he said he understands their rights are protected by the First Amendment, "precious many people died for that liberty."
The final figure has yet to be determined for Snyder's legal costs. Maryland District Court Judge Richard Bennett, who presided over the initial district court trial, will decide whether Snyder has to pay costs incurred in district court. Bennett could not be reached for comment.
Westboro attorney Margie Phelps isn't holding her breath. Bennett might drag his feet, she said.
"He's not eager to award us costs given the hostility" he showed toward the church during the trial, Phelps said.
Even if Westboro Baptist Church fails to recoup any of the money it spent defending itself in court, Phelps said, "the giant international megaphone was worth every dime."
Phelps said O'Reilly should call Westboro "to barter" over the legal costs.
"He might ask Anderson Cooper for help," she said. "I'm just thinking of a way to help a brother out."
Anatomy of a legal bill
Among the costs listed in court documents that Westboro Baptist Church hopes to recoup:
--- $13,900.06 in fees for a court reporter.
--- $3,426.50 for copying papers.
--- $36,180.28 for expert witness fees.
--- $1,150.66 in express mail fees

Dang, that's a lot of money for "expert witnesses". I need to figure out how to break into that gig. I have been accused of being pretty stupid before, so perhaps I could be an expert witness on stupidity. "Um, yes your honor. I saw the protesters marching and yelling near the funeral. Yes they were acting stupid, and trust me, when it comes to stupid I'm the expert."
