What's new

There's a game on tonight.

Excellent points by fish, PKM and mhindy.

I really don't care if Alec averages 20 pts ort becomes and all star. I keep bringing this up, but the leading scorer during the regular season for World Champs averaged 16.7 ppg. I'm much more concerned with efficiency. Just imagine all five starters averaging 16 pts, with 30 additional points coming from the bench (Exum, Hood, Booker, Gobert, etc.). Balance like that is hard to defend.

I think the whole point of Quin's system is to get a good shot, not necessarily a 3-pt FG. Ball movement should open up opportunities for Alec to drive - and that's his strength. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I don't see a real problem with Alec fitting in.

I think it's fair to say that the system is designed to create good shots, but one of the ways it does that so far is punishing defenders for stepping into the lane to help. If Burks doesn't shoot the 3 point shot at a higher clip, he is failing to do that. He is a very interesting and good player in his own way, but I really think you could see him as a borderline first option all star type player if he could improve his jump shot a little bit. Still, even if he never gets any better he is valuable.

I'm a little torn when I read posts saying that nobody takes that many of their shots close to the rim - there is a reason that Alec can and does. Pretty much nobody I've ever watched gets to the rim with such ease and finishes tough shots the way Alec can.

Defenders stepping into the lane to help can be punished by Alec kicking it out to 3-pt shooters, or dishing it to the big man underneath. Sure, he needs to develop a better 3, but my point was that he can be highly successful in Quin's system with what he has right now. He's amazing getting to the rim. Maybe just as important as bumping up his 3-pt % a couple of notches is improving his FT% (good to see him hitting those tonight). That alone would add a couple of points per game to his scoring average.

I, for one, am glad to see some players not falling in love with the long ball .. and going at it the hard way and earning the higher % shots and freebies at the line.

How has Burks passing looked once the d has collapsed?

To me, it seems like his marching orders from Quin are to ATTACK CONSTANTLY. I don't think he's shooting fewer threes by mistake. He puts a ****load of pressure on the defense, even if you know he's gonna slash. He's going left and right, euro-stepping, leap-and-leaning. Seriously, it's fun to watch and really impressive.

His passing could improve. Kanter should be out 18 feet or further along the baseline, and Derrick should be roaming the opposite baseline and waiting.

And, ****, Favors is looking so good. He's going to be an all-star in the next couple of years.

I still hesitate to call Burks a star. To me he is the reincarnated version of Corey Maggette.

Corey Maggette was a damn good player and a stone-cold professional (mercenary) which lead him to poor situations. Kinda Big Al-ish in that sense, perhaps. But Maggette at least scored really efficiently.

Anyway, I think that would be wonderful if he was kinda like that.

And I've never given up on Kanter. I can see it happening this season, but I haven't given up on him.

I didn't get to watch the game and the nba.com video only had like two Jazz highlights. Those ********.

Glad to see Kanter had a breakout game though and that the other starters seem to be producing at a pretty consistent rate.

Yep
He is quietly the best player on the team imo

I haven't watched the games much until the last three of the pre-season, and I am astonished by the way the Jazz have been playing in comparison to the last couple of years. It clearly shows how terrible a coach Corbin was, even worse than I thought, and that is pretty awful. Either Snyder is simply a good coach by comparison or actually a basketball genius.

Maybe all the trade Kanter talk can stop and Jazz nation can just be excited about all the young guys. I know it is just preseason and just one game but this game is exactly why I haven't given up on Kanter.
