What's new

This years Defence Appriciation Thread

Then it's a flawed stat. It should count as a new a possession because they get a new shot clock to set up a new offensive set.

Padding possessions dilutes the stat. You'd have to adjust for possession differential to get to the same useful information anyway. Why add another possession that would need to be subtracted to be meaningful? The point is to show how many points you allow per trip down the floor.

Possessions per game is purely a matter of pace. Possessions do not equal shots. I must assume you must think it's good offense if you get more possessions per game, which is humorous to think about.

To clarify, a team can ONLY have one more possession than the other team per quarter. A team has 23 possessions a quarter? The other team MUST have 22, 23, or 24 possessions that same quarter. Defense/Offense has nothing to do with that.

So my flawed idea that an offensive board would result in a new possession does not change the direction I am going with my thoughts... just the wording. If you basically always have the same possession counts as the opponent, I would obviously have to go in the direction of how many shots were taken with them, and factor in turnovers and free throws... bla bla bla bla.

I think we are all saying the same thing. Utah is keeping the opponents field goal percentage down more than last year, but will have to grab the defensive rebounds in order to capitalize on that. If they cant grab a rebound it will hurt them. I believe their on the ball defense is better, even though their defensive rebounding is worse... and yes they are both defense.

With even a modest increase in effort on defense (or enforcement thereof), this Utah team could be 12-2 right now. The offense is coming; but the poor help defense is disappointing. Meanwhile, the poor boxing out is inexcusable. And it's not just AJ deficient in that department.

Um, isn't that basically a cut and paste response of what you could say about any team? They could be a (better record) team if they just fixed their (numerous flaws any team might have).

I don't know what else to say other than our schedule has been brutal and the Jazz have weathered it very well considering all of the extenuating circumstances.

Agreed. They're better, but we're not seeing positive results yet.

First in the league in both FG and 3pt% defense today -- enjoy it while we can

Interesting. Yet our PP 100 P's is worse than last year. I can't wrap my head around all this, though our rebounding is presumably the number one perpetrator here.
