Tomic as trade bait?

Second round picks are not subject to a pay scale, right?

I think the whole rookie scale expires after a little while, I think the restriction is on when they were drafted, not necessarily if they are a rookie or not. I think that since he was drafted a while back, there is not really a restriction on his pay. I could be wrong though, but I think I remember hearing that somewhere.

^Something like this^

Him being a second-rounder also matters.

Can you counter this, cy?

I think pay and buyout issues re:Tomic are over our heads here. It would be nice if Salt City Hoops could dig into this.

Spencer, you reading? Help us out, braugh.

haha, yeah. Help is needed. I have spent the last 15 minutes googling rookie pay scale, and crap like that. Can't find anything that says when the limits expire on first round picks, but I did find that second round picks have no max or min, and can make up to 25% of the salary cap in years 0-6, or like 12 million per year. If they are like Derrick Rose, and get MVP, multiple all star or multiple first or second team selections, then they can restructure to 35% of the salary cap, which is like 18 mil.

With Tomic being a second round pick (44) it looks like the Jazz could pay him a significant amount. Personally, I don't think that they will pay more than a couple million. But he is getting paid more than that where he is now, so why come over here? Unless he thinks he can get a big payday after proving himself, I would not come over if I were him. Not speculating on what he would want to do, just my opinion.

I don't know about the buyout though, but I think I remember reading something about how it was way too steep a couple years ago for the Jazz to think about buying out, and it would get a little less as he got closer to the end of his contract. Anybody know how much longer he has on his contract?

I may be far too optimistic, but I think Tomic has rookie-of-the-year potential if he comes over. He's arguably the best center in Europe now, and certainly the top player on a final-4 Euroleague team. (And it's a weak draft.)

I've been gearing myself up to have him come over, but questions remain as to whether he will. As the leading player on a top team, he might decide things are good enough where he is. Maybe he only wants to come over now if he has a chance to join/contribute to a real NBA contender (since he's already 26) .

If that's a concern, do you think he could be used as trade bait for one of the contenders? Would you consider any of these? Do you think the other teams would? Would salary cap issues get in the way?:

OKC: for Reggie Jackson or their #12 pick
LAC: for Bledsoe

Any other realistic possibilities?

As I stated in another thread he's come some ways since we first started watching him.
I think he's a solid rotation backup center. He's ready to contribute in the NBA.
Not sure about ROY, but he would have an advantage over the younger guys experience wise.

The important thing with Tomic is to not get carried away. I wouldn't expect him to be a star in this league.
Someone who could help a team yes, but a star probably not.

I have posted a bit in this thread, but have not said my opinion on Tomic yet. I like him, but the worth to me is not in trade bait. I think he could be the fist big off the bench, get 25 minutes a night, and be a valuable piece to go along with Favors and Kanter in the frontcourt. If we are looking for trade value out of Tomic, we would need to sign him to a good contract, and let him build some actual value through playing time. That would be a waste though, because we would be showcasing and taking minutes from guys we want to keep.

So, Tomic for our third Big Man!

This is the year to sign Tomic. We can offer him enough money this season to make it worth his time. We have the extra salary cap that we probably wont be spending on any big name free agents. We should sign him to a good size contract this year with a team option for the next year. If he is decent get him on a long term contract, if not let him go back to Europe.

this is what I have found for tomic contract he signed a 3.5 year contract that ends in the summer on 2013. his buyout was set at 7 mil in 2011. from everything I can gather tomic is a free agent this summer.

Sweet!

The best part about Tomic's game is his passing.

He plays well with others. He's going to try to play off of others, and make his teammates better.

I'd love to watch him pass out of the post for us, and get players cutting again.

Holy Crap he is tall.

Pretty sure that was when he signed with Real Madrid. He is now playing on Barcelona, and I think he signed some sort of extension with them?

Watching Kanter - Favors - Tomic would be such a refreshing ****** to what we endured this year.
It would like trading in your overweight selfish pig of a wife for a young exciting giving skinny blonde.

Hopefully the stars are aligned.

Pretty certain (though don't have time to find links) that:

a) Tomic is now in first year of multi-year deal with Barcelona.
b) 7-million dollar buyout was for the previous contract with Madrid
c) I've never seen a figure for his Barcelona buyout

I'd assume (though I might be wrong) that since KOC openly talked about wanting to talk to him this summer that the buyout isn't insurmountable if interests exists on both sides (and who knows about this -- it's all just speculation now).

Thanks for posting that video. Dude looks awesome, and I like that he can play some defense now and block a few shots here and there. Last time I watched video of him he was soooo skinny. He has grown up a bit since then. He has the body of Pau Gasol now. And don't anyone say I am comparing him to Pau. I know he is not the next Pau. He just looks like him is all. haha.

Also, your analogy was .... interesting?
