Training Camp Notes

I think he may get there but it would be like Walker did. Produce well and become a starter later in the year. When you have game numbers and film it’s easier to see who is better… in practice they would really have to stand out imo.
Hardy low key confirmed this to Sarah Todd. He said that whatever decission they make about the backcourt they will make a "better informed decission" after 20 or so games.

To me that means we are either going to start the vets or try out various starting combos (depending on results). Setting such a date with a rookie starting wouldnt make sense.

I think Keyonte will get more early season minutes than Walker did and will be in the mix to win the starting role when they re-evaluate.

Some things I learned from glancing through various 2/3/4-man lineup data from 2022-23 -- especially regarding playing "pairs" at guard:
  • THT was in almost all of the top lineups (among returning players). He especially stood out when pairing with the likely frontcourt starters of Lauri and Kessler. Was also good with Olynyk. Was generally quite good with Clarkson. However, was terrible with Sexton and Dunn.
  • Clarkson -- generally pretty strong. Probably paired best with the widest range of (returning) players -- though the pairing with Agbaji wasn't good.
  • Sexton -- for as many minutes as he got in the "winning" portion of the season (as opposed to Dunn, for example), it was hard to find great pairings for him, especially among guards. At least was positive with Clarkson, though not by very much; within that pairing, however, some better lineups could be found with particular third or fourth player combos
  • Agbaji -- played great with Dunn. Although some 3- & 4-player combos that included THT were strong, the overall 2-man pairing with THT was not.
  • Dunn -- paired great with Agbaji (and to a lesser degree with Kessler/Olynyk). Was quite bad paired with almost everyone else
So I'm thinking that if Keyonte meshes well with THT, the most effective ways to pair guards may end up being: THT/George, Clarkson/Sexton, and Dunn/Ochai. Maybe the lineup at the Hawaii scrimmage indicates Hardy might be thinking similarly?

(Also learned that, although most of us were eager to move on from Rudy Gay, he was part of as many top Jazz lineups as anyone last season)

Of course lineup data from one year to the next shouldn't be regarded as predictive -- sample sizes are always too small and situations change. So this is just probably a starting point for thinking about what might work this season.

Just because he was springy doesn’t mean he can’t be springier.

I wouldn’t call Jc particularly strong.
Her quote:

Maybe it’s because Collins’ role was always changing and seemingly diminishing in Atlanta, maybe it’s because of the decrease in production, and maybe it’s because I haven’t watched Collins a lot in person, but I feel like he’s never looked as strong and springy.

It feels like a revelation to me on this quote. He may have been one of the springiest powerful dunkers in the league. He’s always been strong and springy and dunked in peoples moufs. This isn’t like Lauri last year all of a sudden putting everyone on posters.

Has he gotten back in touch with his old pharmacist?

The lack of actual content coming out of training camp so far sucks. With such a rabid fan base you would think that they would at least focus a little on content creation and give us some videos of guys doing shooting drills and maybe throwing down some dunks. Instead we get incomplete scraps where it is an 8 second video showing us almost nothing.

The Jazz and media outlets went cheap with the airplane tickets. Oh well… one more day.

They really did pull the rug out from under some of the guys. I usually speak with Ron Boone a couple times a week at the gym and he was expecting to be in Hawaii with the team. He had a knee replacement surgery a few months ago so he mentioned that he was concerned about swelling on the flight there.

Diminished role. He was traes pnr buddy. He get 4-5 lobs per game. Then came Capela who is very limited offensively they gave him some of jcs pnr. Add Hunter who got better and Dejounte Murray he went from 2nd to 4th option. His fit besides Lauri and Kessler is going to be an issue

I read JC as Jordan. Didn’t go back to source. Reading comp fail.

Yeah. Overreacting to all kinds of nothingburgers is s time-honored tradition during training camp.

the lack of jazz info out there is staggering
It's annoying. I'm going to bitch to Jim Olson about it the next time I see him. There is no excuse not to at least give us a bunch of videos of the guys getting up shots. That is the least that they should provide.

Most teams have been trending towards less access. That's probably part of the equation for so many teams moving the start of their camps out of location.
