If the aforementioned trade is actually a possibility, I would imagine the Jazz would have to send out Alec Burks in addition to Trey Burke to make the numbers work. If NYK had the space to absorb Roy and Alec, and considering their need for 1st round draft picks going forward, they would be getting a decent return to be out from under Melo's max contract.
Phil Jackson may not see Carmelo as a good fit for the triangle offense. It will be interesting to see if this trade or something akin to it actually comes to fruition. Because it's just really strange that the Jazz have:
1. been so quiet in free agency (haven't even signed a scrub)
2. haven't signed Lyles when they know he needs the Summer League reps
3. have talked to but have not nailed down their Euro prospects, and
4. are leaving Trevor Booker hanging on a team-friendly deal.
All of these things make me think that something is going on behind the scenes. And if it's something like this trade, then more power to them. But I believe Melo has a no-trade clause, which is what might be gumming up the works.
