What's new

TURKEY-GERMANY : Nowitzki- Turkey

2.7 TOs per game? Hahahaha

I didn't realize they were that high. That's 6.8/48 minutes and 1.5 TO's higher /48 than the nearest competitor in the NBA, Russell Westbrook, who turned the ball over at a rate of 5.3/48. Don't know how NBA coaches are going to like that and it may impact his playing time in the NBA because all things being equal, his TO's will not improve in the NBA. Still young though. So those of you who have seen JV play in full games, how does he lose the ball for TO's? Is it stuff like traveling, crappy passes, losing it in the post, or a combo. of some/all of these?

I think after todays game you can switch JV with Kanter

Kanter, 9.6pts, 3.9reb, 0.5ast, 0.3stl, 0.6blk, 1.1to .590FG, .679FT 17.8min
JV 10.4pts, 3.6reb, 1ast, 0.8stl, 1.1blk, 2.7 to .707fg, .710FT 17.3min.

only thing Kanter does better in this tourney is rebounding and less TO.

Actually Kanter seemed like a much better scorer to me. He scored most of the points in post plays without any help but JV found lots of easy points to the basket with great passes of Jasikevicius. This game it was same, he got maybe 2 points in a pick n roll with Preldzic but other than that he scored most points with his own struggle, he even missed a few easy shots that he could make. But he forced Serbia to change defense plan in second half, if we could use him smarter, we could grab a win easily. He was just too dominant over the Serbian big men today.

I didnt see many games of lithuania, but for the part that i have seen, he was too young, too eager to prove something, and too much energy which is sometimes in controllable. He was better than most of Lithuanian big men because the rest just sucks. But his best chance was the good lithuanian guards which turkey didnt have. He got lots of easy points thanks to their good playmaking. If you watch the highlights of both JV and kanter you will see, Kanter had much tougher points, mostly banging with his opponents while JV used his agility and long arms going to the basket

I think he is a good player but i have too many questions on him like how well he can translate his game to nba? He cant find those easy buckets against nba teams. And he is still too thin to bang up with bigger players.

Kanter as well, may have some problems in his first year, but his game and body seems much much more suitable to play in nba comparing to JV. He will force lots of teams to double team and open way to score 3 pointers from perimeter players (which right now we dont have any consistent shooter.) I can imagine, if we had a guy like korver, who can shoot quickly and accurate, he could just pass the ball to Kanter , he would post up , either score with a post savy move or pass the ball to the shooter in double team and shooter makes the 3. Kanter should learn better how to play pick n roll and add some new plays to his offensive game, then he will for sure be a 20 12 guy. But we gotta be patient for that. If we add 2 players to kanter, favors and hayward who will complement the team chemistry well, we will be a contender in 3 yrs latest. Just i dont see any way to achieve big things with the lead of Harris and Big Al

I don't disagree entirely, but learning how to play the pick and roll well is a mighty valuable skill. It will likely translate, especially given how outrageously good JV seems to be at it, though I agree that JV will have to develop better strength and go-to moves to become something more than a good 3rd option. Some players (Al) never figure out how to play the pick and roll well. We don't know if Kanter will, though I have high hopes. It will likely take time, as you say.

Some of those were offensive fouls, some for some reason were credited to him after he failed to catch passes from guards ( in NBA it would be TO for passer but in FIBA they must give it to the last man who touched it ). TO in fact are not my concern about him, he commits silly fouls like trying to reach, rebounding over the back or setting screens... when he will learn how to stay out of trouble he will be just fine. His passing actually been very good.

You should be concerned about his TOs; if he commits two in the NBA (which is much more likely than getting them from weaker competition at Eurobasket) as a rookie in his 10 minutes stints of playing, hell be riding the bench.

here JV highlights from Germany game. Aybars, he had only 4 pts on those alley-oop dunks from Jasikevicius passes today, rest was his work in the post mostly vs Kaman, offensive rebounds and FT. And see how easy he blocks both Nowtizki and Kaman just with pure length. I see good thing coming for him in few years when he will add 10-15lbs of muscle. And idiot is right, mastering how to play pick and roll is mighty valuable in NBA, thats why I think Cavs are going to regret their pick as Irwing and JV would be killer combo on offense for them for years to come..

as I said what is TO in FIBA for catcher of the pass is TO for passer in NBA. I am not concerned, kid is only 19 year old, he will be just fine. He is good passer, not traveling, only thing he does sometimes is offensive fouls setting screens which can be mastered with more experience.

How many of his turnovers where off of "misfired" passes?? Because to me it seems like you dont have an actual figure, and you're just pulling excuses out of your *** to explain his absolutely ABYSMAL Turnover rate. Keep in mind that age shouldnt mean much, seeing as if anyone KANTER should be the one commiting turnovers left and right, due to his lack of experience. I thought JV plays in the Euroleague? Something doesnt add up, why would he be more "excited" than Kanter? And PS Ive seen 2 Lithuania games, both of which had JV commiting travels..

I would say in his game vs Poland he had at least 3 TO credited to him because of the bad passes. I probably missed his travels, but I'll take your word for that if you saw them. Again watching games TO do not jump as something bad in his play to me, it is his fouling which is bigger concern to me ( offensive foul counts as TO so there you go)

Yes, Jonas is a beast. 1st hook shot looked smooth as butter. Blocks were monstrous. Alley Oops were vicious.

I hate to be a prick, but you never addressed the latter part of my post, seeing as I had a few questions for you

No denying JV was especially impressive today. He was scoring with legitimate post moves on Kaman, didn't think he had it in him. His length is a natural disruptor as well, just holding his arms up he was able to turn away Dirk and Kaman several times. Having said that, Im happy with the Kanter pick. They both played about equal in the tournament and Kanter was rusty from not playing organized ball for 1 and a half years.

If this is your question then I did not feel like answering it as I never used "excited" as an excuse for his TO. Plus I think we can agree on one thing looking at Kanters and JV numbers. Jonas is more TO and foul prone, they both scoring and rebounding about the same but Jonas shooting much better FG, slightly better FT ( actually his regular FT % is over. 800 so I would call him better FT shooter then Kanter despite bad FT shooting in this tourney so far ), has more assists, steals and blocks. Maybe Kanter will get better at passing and shooting with time and JV gets less foul and TO prone. I think it is reasonable to expect that from both.

It's going to be very interesting to see when he reaches the NBA whether/to what extent JV's tremendous offensive efficiency is partly due to his team's play. Lithuania's team has 4 of the 8 top TS% players among players in the tourney receiving significant minutes. JV's ridiculous 72% is only 4th on his team. Does this all change once he no longer has the great efficiency/passing in the wings and guards opening things up for him? When the system he's in is no longer so obviously superior to other systems?

great obsevation and one of the reasons I felt JV was better fit for Jazz then Kanter. Jazz were always around top teams in assists in league and having a guy who operates so effective on pick and roll would be very beneficial for both pass happy team and a player ( LT leads tourney in assists ). Now Kanter is more like big AL - iso , post up, back to the basket player and it is yet to be seen if he can become effective passer out of the double teams and low block. It might be that Corbin will change Jazz offense to adjust to current roster strength and we will see more iso plays then before and Kanter should thrive in that type of offense.

So nearly half of his average PPG comes from plays Kanter never sees?

big Al is not seeing pick and roll alley-oop dunks either. You need to be good at pick and roll to get those looks. Not saying Kanter can't master it but it is obviously not his game.

lets get things clear, JV can never come anything close to Kanter in rebounding, and we will see the difference once they get major mins in nba games. And in my opinion, in teams with same productivity and help level from guards Kanter will have more ppg in nba. Anyway we will see, i dont say Jonas is bad, but he got this numbers with much more help from his teammates while Kanter was too lonely especially on offensive end

I honestly, would like Big Al to stay in utah long years if he had half fundamentals and basketball iq as Kanter
