What's new

Ty Lawson, Anyone?

Memphis is currently the 4th seed. What do you think they were expecting? New Orleans is below projections, but not Memphis.

Memphis's current record and ranking is misleading. They beat poor teams only and have -2.6 point differential.

Their point differential is misleading. They have played GS twice and got beat by 50 in one of them. Have won 8 of 10... Conley ain't going nowhere.

While I think your first point is great, if Conley was so assuredly staying, wouldn't he have signed an extension? While I'm pretty sure he can make a lot more money re-signing over extending, how much longer is Memphis going to be really good? And will they ever be great?

I think holding out for anything in free agency is foolish, doubly so if you're a Jazz fan, but I don't think it's a lock that Conley re-signs.

If you watch Memphis this year, they are definitely not the same. Last night was a great game for Gasol but he was the only starter who really helped at all. The biggest concern is their defense. It has not been good at all. No more "grit and grind" in Memphis. As far as that relates to Conley, they really don't have any other option so I don't see him leaving either, Memphis will offer what they need to.

Are you saying we should trade for him? He's a unrestricted FA...

That seems like a bad idea. Don't get me wrong, I am one of the biggest advocates of at least ****ing trying to land free agents, but free agency is such a crapshoot and you can't plan around it.

I think he resigns and an extension is terrible business decision on his part. The cap is going to explode and everyone has max cap space. I think I'd rather get maxed for 4 or 5 years at a number 150% better per year than sign a 2 year extension.

I don't think they trade him and I think there is a very good chance he resigns (like 70-80% chance). Unless there is a year ending injury to Gasol I doubt they give up and trade Conley. They may look different right now, but that doesn't mean they won't find their rhythm at some point.

I doubt we'd have a chance in free agency, but the assets we'd have to give up to get him are too much. What would it take? Couple firsts and a young player? A lot to gamble that you can resign the guy.

I highly doubt Memphis would listen to (sensible) offers for Conley, so the point is moot.

The best chance the Jazz have in future roster-building from here on out is be the best they can be and hope that cap space aligns with a good player wanting to upgrade their playing situation.

This seems contradictory. Since FA is such a crapshoot, especially for Utah who probably have one of the biggest disadvantages in FA in all of pro sports, then Plan A is to develop the talent we draft and leave flexibility to keep that talent, and Plan B is to try to add the talent in FA. Everyone is so ready to add all these guys in FA, but are we even at that level yet? I don't think we can make an Iguodala to the Warriors type move until we are a playoff team with our drafted players.
