What's new

Utah Jazz vs. Boston Celtics July 6th, 2015 7 PM Mountain Time *Official Game Thread for SL*

I am not sure if it is just because it is summer league, but we played a lot with 3 pgs on the court. If we have Burke, Hanlan, Exum, Cotton, and Neto on the roster I wonder if we will run Exum at SF at times with 2 other pgs (Hanlan would likely have to be one of them because of his size). Exum did great rebounding last night... grabbed a couple in traffic.

I really like Cotton, I think he is deserving of a roster spot and a regular spot in the rotation.

Exum's handle looked a lot better and he could dribble in traffic. Long-armed players often struggle with pull up jumpers because they can't get the shot off very quick. He looked like he improved on that and his base is much wider. He has a bad habit of crossing mid court and then he straightens up before he checks out the court. Smart used that as an opportunity to push him out further, but I think that's something he can fix. Too many times, he sat in the corner and didn't move. The offense didn't sit him any picks to free him up and I think he could have gone to the hole even more. He probably would have had 10 assist if he was playing with good shooters. It was nice to see him aggressive and he did look stronger. He still looks gassed after going up and down the court a few times. He was pulling on his uniform and bending over on the second possession.

What are these ways you speak of?

Its just the way you take contact and fall... Tony Parker hits the deck a ton but positions his body well to allow him not to take impact the wrong way.

Last night's ankle roll was one that happens and is tough to avoid all the time when moving through traffic. He took a couple other falls that were rough last night... You just want to avoid being helpless in the air with nowhere to land. You want to attack but you don't want to completely abandon all caution... its a long season.

Feels like we just went in a circle.

A few minutes before, Exum hit the deck on the offensive end, landing on his back. Nothing major, but he let his head snap back seemingly hitting it on the hardwood. Almost concussed as he was holding the bank of his head walking to the bench. Dude needs to learn how to take a fall.

Minutes before that he was again down and took an eternity to get back up as the play ticked on. Dude also needs to learn how to get back up.

I am not concerned with the fall that caused the ankle injury... that happens when you move through traffic... there were other falls last night as he was going to the basket that were a little more concerning to me.

I started this after I got home from the games, finished it this morning.

The Jazz did a fabulous job staging this event. My kids had a blast at the carnival, even though we got wet, very wet. We came away with a bunch of free swag: Jazz t shirts, Jazz water bottles, and a tide pen from afcu. They had little Caesars and Cup bop food trucks outside. I thought cup bop was good, but not as good as the hype.

I bought tickets at the arena, walked right up -around 5:30, no lines. I bought general admission, they had to open extra sections of the upper bowl to seat everyone. I really wanted to sit lower bowl, but not feasible with the family. Many great lower bowl seats available. I'd like to go back with a buddy and sit lower bowl.

Okafor was better than I thought he'd be. People compared him to Al Jefferson. Those people have either never seen Al play or never seen Okafor play, because they are not the same. He moves smooth, is alert and in the right place. He will be very good. He looked smaller than advertised to me. I thought he looked or played like a pf not a center.

Furkan Aldamir has a great name and fabulous euro game. He would an excellent 4 th big. He Is in the right spots, and is aggressive, just lacks a little of the NBA physical tools.

Jp Tokoto seemed to be pressing.

McRae is a player...where did Philly get him?

Bostons pgs are going to destroy Philly.

I hate the Spurs. Maybe hate is too strong, but I certainly have spur envy. As an aside, I wanted to rip the spurs shirt off that little twerp in the Jazz video. Seriously, who allowed some kid in Spurs gear to make it into the Jazz spirit video? Really it was the only blemish on the entire evening. Back to hating the Spurs....first game of summer league and their guys have perfect floor spacing and make nearly every defensive rotation. It made Philly look like a pick up team by comparison.

Jean Livo, Caddy Lalange both can play in the NBA. Livo was impressive rim defender. He had a block and dunk combo that was fabulous. Dairis Bertans should be on the spurs roster.

I went walking around the arena, saw the 1280 studios...but couldn't find PK.

I stood in line for popcorn, then bumped into Antoine Carr who was standing near Memet Okur.

I was looking forward to Smart v Exum

at first I was disappointed. Exum looked just like he did in April. Reluctant, hesitant, a lot of horizontal dribbling-- meaning he dribbles side to side without making a move towards the basket. Then he caught the ball in the corner, and started dribbling out, then quickly crossed over Smart and drove baseline. I don't remember if he scored, but it was a nice move and showed great awareness. There is still something concerning about him, I think it is the horizontal movement that bothers me. Or maybe it is he loses his handle quite a bit, or maybe I'd like him to finish strong at the rim. But he is young, the ability is there if the coaches can teach the mindset.

Bryce Cotton is a player. I love his game, his energy and his court gravity.

Rodney Hood is clearly several steps beyond everyone else. Great court awareness, the game slowed down for him, he created space and made shots. I would like to see him play against the Spurs' Bertans but nobody on Philly compares to him, he should probably retire from summer league so he doesn't get injured. I am really excited for him.

Smart is a tough guy, we would love him if he was a Jazzman. We will jeer him for years.

RJ Hunter looked lost and overwhelmed. I felt bad for him. Lots of fouls, couldn't find his place in their offense. D-league for him.

Chris Johnson had two NBA moves early in the game. A three from the side, and a drive to basket. I thought he was going to explode for the game, I wanted him to explode, then he kind of went missing.

Jack Cooley is a bruiser, I wish he was 2 inches taller. I loved the hard pick on Marcus Smart on the play Dante sprained his ankle.

JaJuan Johnson should be in the league.

Mikey for Boston is a decent player.

My section wanted Rudy to get up to knock that ball off the top of the back board. Epic fail by the fans for not raising the rafters with chants of "Rudy, Rudy, Rudy" when his picture was on the jumbotron.

Wifey took pictures of the family at the game, but couldn't find a Utah Jazz Summer League hashtag --who is doing the Jazz Social Media? Missed opportunity there.

And why is no-one on Jazzfanz talking about the Lindsey interview from yesterday? He was laughing, hinting and teasing the radio hosts about all the jazz announcements that would be happening later this week. He mentioned Trey Lyles by name, but not others. It was the closest thing to a FA rumor all summer. I thought it would be big news around here.

This guy gets what I'm saying. If you've played you know what I'm talking about... You don't want to throw your body into a crowd if possible and when you fall you want to take the court impact the right way. There is no technique per se you just develop it as a feel thing.

Almost makes me want to move back to Utah... Almost. Next year our summer trip is going to be planned around this event... I just have to find some other reason to be there around the same date for a cover, so that my wife doesn't think I just wanted to go back for sl games.

Was it part of some master plan then? Hold him back, don't let him play super hard and push the ball on offense. Make sure he passes up those blow-bys in the lane. Then WHAMMO, unleash the BEAST on the Summer League.

Brilliant!
Master plan? Yes I assume the coaching staff was smart enough to have a development plan for Exum. They said as much. Do a few things very well. Play within your means. Be mistake free as possible. The same path our coach has had other rookies follow who are young. Understand the game and get a feel for the speed. But if you like that he was scared of something and was mentally weak then visited the wizard of oz this off season and now he is good that's fine too. Scared players play good defense right? Keep on hating Exum, eventually you will jump on his band wagon. Or was this the game for you? He is now good but was a bust before?

Okay. You confused me because you responded to a post that was specifically about the ankle injury.

Yeah that one is tough to avoid... too many big feet and too little space. I did that exact thing when I was 18 but wasn't able to get my weight off the foot... I was on crutches for 4 weeks and you could see the bruising of the tendons all the way into my calf for 4-5 months.

The other falls Exum took last night were not too graceful... the way to take contact is how he did it on the And 1 he had. Kind of slide off it.

I didn't hear it. I'll go and listen to it as soon as I can.

My coach was a hard ***. When I sprained my ankle in a game, he would tell me at the next practice to run around the gym floor until the pain was gone. Next game it was still swollen, but no pain. Never missed a game. LOL Of course both ankles have massive broken blood vessels showing in the skin.

Sounds like he may have been a witch doctor.
