Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

Jackson and Kuzma were the two guys who killed the combine's first scrimmage then sat out in day 2.
Sure they liked Bradley better but now they like frank enough to eat 15M in dead money and give up a talented player to a team in the conference that might drop out of the playoffs.

I’m guessing if they like him that much now they would have picked him then. We know how much DL values his flexibility and cap space... that’s a terrible trade... did LoPo hack your account?
The only real point you have here is the trading talented players to a team your vying for a playoff spot for. Not something I really thought about.

DL could have loved both Mitchell and Bradley, but picked Bradley because he felt like he needed a backup center (we had not yet signed Udoh ofc due to draft being before free agency). And yes, now that DL has a clearer picture of the team he may be willing to eat dead money to add Jackson (not in the first deal, but in the one that has Hood and the pick).

Plus, directly after I said Favors for Asik/Jackson I said the Jazz wouldnt do it and then I made the next trade that would be possible (not probable, just a workable trade that has some basis in reality). It wasnt me saying "Go out and do this deal now". It was just me working through possibilities w/ the Pelicans centered around Favors. I never acted like it was some slam dunk deal both sides should say yes to. Dont compare me to Lopo damn it.

Then don’t defend it so hard. There is no way we’d do the first deal. Add hood and the pick and I think it’s fair but I bet we could do better.

So because NO has salary concerns I wonder if they’d prefer to put Hill in the deal instead of Asik.

Hill has an extra year and is overpaid but useful. Could play the four for us and play strong switching defense and give us adequate 3 point shooting for the position.

The can waive and stretch Asik and Ajinca. Doing so would turn 17M in cap used into 5M in cap used. Between Hill and waiving those guys they would drop 25M in cap allocations. Could use it to re-sign Hood.

I don’t love it because it messes with our 2019 cap space but Hill is a guy I think would fit well.

NOLA almost has to do a trade now. With Solomon Hill coming back, they don't necessarily have to target Favors. I could see a smart trade for NOLA being Asik and a lottery protected 1st for Burks and a 2nd.

If Burks helps NOLA stay in the playoffs, then its brilliant. If he doesn't and they dont make the playoffs, then NOLA keeps their pick.

If we can swing the trade so the 1st lowers in protection the next few years (lottery protected 2018, top 11 2019, top 8 2020, etc), that would be good for us. We could get a better pick down the road or a 1st this year.

I don’t think any team looks at AB as someone that can help them win...

Asiks deal can be stretched over 5 years taking the cap hit down to a little over 3M. I think they’d rather do that then kill a first and keep AB at 11.5.

Think I'd want more for Hood.

I might too. Tell Chicago they can have Jackson and our second... we keep the NO pick. IDK... there might be something there.

Asik does nothing to help NOLA win. Burks might. Worth a shot for them. They have been pleading for wing help. And if they dont make the playoffs, its a matter of time before AD thinks about leaving.

I keep coming back to Denver. Something like a Rubio/Joe Johnson for Faried/Chandler/Arthur and an asset like a protected 1st or Hernangomez. They have got to cut Faried's deal and if Chandler and Arthur pick up their options (which they should) they are in a world of hurt with Jokic's max looming. Plus I actually think Rubio could help them with much more space in Denver than here.

I would rather have Rubio than any of those guys listed from Denver. All are SF or PF and I'd rather play O'Neale, Jerekbo and Thabo this year and/or next.

Yes it should be obvious the trade isn't due to the value of those players. It's to unload Rubio and collect and asset for talking on money for next year.

If we were to get a first, then sure I guess. Just don't know why Denver does that.

Denver is very much over the salary cap and due to Jokic's situation, they need to extend him this offseason or risk him becoming a UFA. They need to cut salary and this does it in a way that may bring in a player who can help (Rubio) at position of need.

With the recent speculation about maximizing Gobert's prime, I don't see us going full tank to let Denver save money and make the playoffs. Faried, Chandler and Arthur are season killers this year and next.

Denver trade is a bad idea.

Still think the Jazz try to get a workable piece - and do so without giving up a 1st.

Hood likely becomes the focal point in a deal like that.

I’m expecting chatter for Fournier and Mirotic to pick back up here pretty soon.

There are so many deals out there based off the chatter. Nobody wants to pull the trigger quite yet.

Hope Burks can find a new home. To me, he seems like the only guaranteed 2018-19 salary we will possibly move.

Favors would be a rental for NO. I don't think that they would have much interest in him since it's doubtful that he would help them win anything this year and then he would probably be allowed to walk when they try to re-sign Boogie. I think that they would have a ton of interest in Hood though.

I think our number one plan is to move Hood, and possibly Favors. Burks is expiring next year, so not a problem, and he helps us win when Hood is out. Favors plays well, but there's the problem of free agency. I don't see the Jazz moving anyone just to make a deal, it's going to be for players who help us win. They definitely haven't given up on playoffs. And they for sure are not giving away Ricky for scraps.
