Utah vs. #15 Pitt

A begrudging congrats to the Utes. Hate them with a passion, but they were the better team - despite trying to give the game away.
I don't disagree with calling a Timeout to "ice" a kicker, but I don't think the officials should let it be called that late. And there should be a rule in college against calling one 2x in a row.

But Utes won, so bully for them!

i hope you're right but I think putting Pitt away will be harder than you make it sound. Wannstedt is stubborn enough to stay with the run all not long, even if it's not working at all. If they wear Utah down, and it's close in the 4th Qtr, this could easily turn into a nightmare for Utah.

With that being said, if Utah can get up by a couple of scores, that nullifies Pitt's running game a bit and maybe Utah can find a way to get outta this game with what seems like an easy win.

While the game was far from as easy as I had hoped (mostly because of bone headed penalties and Shaky). Utah's defense absolutely shut down the running game. Pitt's QB made some plays and kept it close like I said he would have to. He also made the play that lost them the game.

Wynn will cost the Utes at least a couple of games before the year is done.

Wynn played pretty good. The INT in the end zone was bad but he was under heavy pressure at the time. He made some really good plays and some questionable ones.

I think it's the pass defense that is going to cost them a few games if they don't get it figured out.

Wynn looked good in the first half. Looked like crap in the second. I'm not sure if it was that hit that he took late in the 2nd quarter or what. But he lost his composure and started dancing with his happy feet. Needs to avoid that, set up, and make throws like a man. Happy feet and throwing off balance results in crappy floaters, like that pass he made to Pitt's linebacker in the endzone. .

He also needs to get better at the blitzes. The few times Pitt blitzed he struggled to find the hot receiver. It was early in the first quarter when Pitt blitzed a few times and Wynn somehow managed a few times to get rid of it and made some great plays. I think one was a dumpoff to Wide just as Wynn was having his facemask taken off. That play was nice.

Yet, that tapered off and nearly every time Pitt blitzed later in the game they found success. If he can improve on that(which he probably will. QBs with good arms always look for the big plays. It takes time for them to learn patience), lookout.

I liked the aggressive play calling too. Although, I would much rather see more Asiata than Wide right now. Perhaps it was the way Pitt's defense played... It just seemed like Wide hit the Pitt wall and folded, while Asiata could at least gain a few yards.

Defense looked fantastic. Especially against Pitt's stud receiver. Mike Shannahan was the receiver that hurt the Utes. You can live with that. I'll take my chances with Mike trying to win games than any of Pitt's other big time players.

Penalties hurt, Utes can't get any worse there.

Shaky was horrible and was clearly Pitt's best player tonight. So many play on words haters could make right now...

Utes looked pretty darn athletic and tough. I think they'll surprise a few more teams this year after starting unranked. I can't wait until TCU comes into town....

Wow, your head is so far up your *** it is scary. Every thread you post in it is pretty much the same thing. You say how horrible and idiotic BYU fans are while you fit your hated mold exactly. Good job. Both side's fans are pretty much the same. It is a rivarly, it is how it works. The fact that you dont see that and actually believe your side is somehow a better caliber of fan shows your head hasnt seen light in a while.

Except that my I brought points about the title of the thread and did not just troll like your quoted post or like all of trollnan's posts. And my points about the actual game were not that far off.

Good post but I disagree with your criticism of Wide. He had one huge run where he dragged 3 guys for 4 or 5 yards after getting 15 before. He also made some plays as the dump off receiver and could have had a few others if Wynn could have got him the ball.

284 yds, 3TD, I will take that every game let alone the opening game.

Those numbers are deceiving. Most of Wynn's "pass yardage" came after the receiver caught the ball and did an exceptional job of turning a 5-10 yard pass into a 40 yard gain. Wynn's receivers make him look much better than he is.

Completely disagree. While I agree that Wynn needs to get better on his decision making while getting bitzed, I'm not going to punish him for the YAC that his WR's had last night. A perfect example of why Wynn deserves credit is the 61 yard catch and run by Christopher in the 4th Qtr. Wynn made the correct read on the coverage and threw a perfect ball that hit Devonte in stride allowing him to continue running at full speed. While WR's should always get credit for YAC, it's often lost on a lot of people that in order to get good YAC, a QB has to be putting the ball in right place or it's all for not.

Should we go back and watch old video and take away passing yards from Detmer, Beck, and Hall, because of all the YAC their WR's had, or maybe, just maybe do we give them credit for simply being good QB's who gave their WR's the opportunities to make plays once they caught the ball?

It's clear that you don't really like Wynn as a QB and think he's going to cost Utah a few games this season. While I don't think everything was sunshine and lollipops with Wynn last night, I certainly saw enough positives to feel very, very good about him leading this team. Couple that with the fact that Pitt may be the best overall defense he see's all year (or at least top 2 along with TCU) and I think he'll be ok. In fact, I think the kid could be in line for an amazing year.

Wynn definitely had his good moments and bad, have to give some of that credit to the Pitt D but he is still a 19-20yr old true sophomore and there will be growing pains and inconsistency during games as with any young kid. It's how he deals with those "rough" patches and bounces back that has me excited and I know lots of U fans are excited about him coming into this season but I think some may have forgotten he's still learning and getting a feel for the game despite last years (half season and bowl) success. So I'm just hoping those mistakes don't come at the worst times and that the D can help cover them up, like they did for Shaky and special teams last night.

Wynn looked a little sketchy in the second half, but I think he's going to settle in and do well. This was their biggest challenge for a little while, so he has some time to build up confidence against the CSUs and WYOs of the conference before taking on the big boys.

Admittedly, I know nothing about Iowa St. I am just assuming that's a winnable game.

That play where the Pitt quarterback quick started his offense trying to get the ball out to an unguarded WR was a killer. If he would've waited a little bit longer the DB still would have been unsettled and they probably would have gotten the same result(winning TD). Bummer, but I guess that's what a being a Sophmore on the road means.

Varsity starts Saturday.

The last 2 posts in this thread proves that as much as they'd like to deny it, BYU fans are obviously very wrapped up in what Utah is doing. So much so that they had to come in here and try to find a way to put a negative spin on an opening season win against the #15 team in the nation. Had BYU opened with a win against Pitt in the EXACT same fashion, they would be in here beating their chest and talking up their beloved Cougs. Funny how that works.

Well done gents. Stay classy.

that would've been devestating if we lost. but luckily we held on there at the end. nice win, defense played well, offense and special teams was a little bit Shaky. but we won that's all that matters.

I knew all the TO's and penalties would come back at some point and bite the U in the butt. It ended that Pitt had about as many penalties so they kinda canceled each other out but it isn't often you win a game when you have 4TO's in a game (2fmb, 1int and 1 blk punt). Those mistakes kept the game close, instead of the U building up the lead to have enough cushion for the 4th Qtr rally everybody should have seen coming and that Pitt had.
I'm sure I'm not the only one that seen enough football to know when you outplay the other team in the first half but due to TO's only have a 7pt lead it's going to be a tough second half and that's pretty much what happened.
