Video Game Thread

Well, just in case anyone was looking for the next jaw-dropping No Man's Sky statistic, here it is:

Sean Murray, one of the creators of the computer game No Man’s Sky, can’t guarantee that the virtual universe he is building is infinite, but he’s certain that, if it isn’t, nobody will ever find out. “If you were to visit one virtual planet every second,” he says, “then our own sun will have died before you’d have seen them all.”

For the curious, that would mean that No Man's Sky has more than 150 quadrillion (1,500,000,000,000,000,000) planets.

I am so pumped about the idea of a basically infinite universe to explore that I honestly don't care much about what the gameplay is like. That's an unusual thing for me to say, because usually gameplay is everything to me... I've never much cared about graphics or story. But this game really seems like it's going to be something we've never seen before, something that a lot of people have wanted for a long time. I can't remember the last time I've been this giddy about an upcoming game.
 
Alice: Madness Returns was pretty awesome. First game I've managed to play all the way through in the last 2 or 3 months.
 
I've finished Child of light, Bastion and Transistor. All of them are quite good.

Transistor stood on its own platform. It put the narrator into a relatable position that Bastion couldn't. Red also was more interesting than the Kid. I am surprised to see more people like Bastion.

Child of Light had a beatiful language even though it felt forced sometimes.

Europa Universalis IV. Can't stop playing.

Killer is Dead. Looks like it is going to be bad. Gameplay is very much like Devil May Cry and the story is messed up right now. Hopefully it picks up. I also couldn't buy into the art style.

As a fan of exploration games, this sounds like the bee's knees to me.

When I first got Morrowind, I remember spending days just wandering around the world. It was about as fun as I've ever had a in a game, despite its many bugs and problems with combat. The key to this game is if they can get the atmosphere right. Morrowind nailed it IMO.
 
If anyone would have a suggestion, I crave for a different, unique and original game. Last time, I've played Journey on a friend's PS for half an hour and it was beautiful and definitely something new. I would like to know if there are other games out of the mainstream themes like Journey. Preferably for PC, because I've never had a game console and I don't consider to have anytime soon.

Well, of course your best bet if you liked Journey is either Flower or flOw, which are games by the same developer (I love all three). But like Journey, they are both for Sony consoles only.

Kinda hard to recommend without more of a genre guideline, but one I've already talked about in this thread that's on PC is The Stanley Parable. The gameplay is nothing exciting mechanics-wise, but it will blow your mind nonetheless.

You could also check out Antichamber, which is a really crazy puzzle-type game.

Thanks for the great suggestions man. Repped. You indeed are an avid gamer.

I checked the games and definitely liked both Antichamber and The Stanley Parable. The resemblance of Antichamber to Portal is enough itself for me to want to buy it. And it has also enough difference and dissimilarity not to regret trying it.

Despite the fact that there are only about three or four hours of content, The Stanley Parable is one of my very favorite games ever, because it's a game that humorously but ruthlessly exposes the limitations of video games themselves. It's a game about games. And it's something that I really think anyone and everyone who considers himself/herself a gamer should experience. You'll never look at games the same way again.

I also liked the reviews about this game. I haven't played a game like this before and I would certainly love to try it.

However, since I'm not much of a gamer, I don't like to spend much for games. Actually the only two games I've ever purchased were Portal 2 and the M&B series because they were both brilliant games and I really wanted to support them. Anyway, The Stanley Parable is $15 at the moment in Steam and the Antichamber is $20. My question is, do you know when could another discount like you wrote in the above post be on these games on Steam and how could I learn about it if it ever happens?

No problem. I'm probably the biggest gamer geek on this board, so I'm always happy to give people whatever help I can in finding things they might like.

As for your question, theoretically there's a good way: add any games you're thinking about getting to your Steam wishlist. You can then tell Steam to e-mail you when any of them goes on sale. Unfortunately, the bad news is that I've never actually gotten this functionality to work correctly. :-/ Things on my wishlist go on sale and I don't get e-mails. So you may just want to bookmark the appropriate Steam pages for the games you want and keep checking back.

But, one nice thing about The Stanley Parable is that you can actually download a demo! On the Steam page, there is a very unobtrusive and easily missed grey button to the right of the green "Add to Cart" that says "Download PC Demo." This is a demo that was made specifically for one of the gaming conventions, and it's not the first part of the full game at all, it's entirely different content, so you won't be spoiling anything for yourself by playing it. It's not nearly so mind-bending and spectacular as the real thing, but it's fun in its own right and will give you a better sense of the flavor of the game.

Thanks, I'll do both, I hope the wishlist method to work though, because I'm sure I will forget that even I bookmarked them.

Yep, pretty unobtrusive button, no wonder I missed it too. But I'm downloading it right now and probably will try it this weekend. I'll get back to this thread when I've done that.

I didn't. A lot of people seem to like it, but I was unimpressed after playing the beta. I get the feeling it's been hyped up way past what the game itself actually merits.

I'll be interested to see how the game is received by critics, but so far there are virtually no reviews up. Metacritic has only two, one a 9/10 and another at 7/10. I imagine there will be a good many more up tomorrow.
 
I preordered the digital download for the PS4 been so busy I've barely been able to play, lvl 10 hunter. Everybody I know that has it either is on the PS3 or Xbox One so I haven't really been able to get the true multiplayer experience as of yet.
 
Anyone recommend a good FPS for the PC that you can just jump in and out of without being stuck in an unsaveable spot or in the middle of a mission or something?

have you played borderlands 2? great game, runs well on most PC's, short missions so even if you have to leave its not a huge deal to start them over.
