What's new

We FINALLY Get to See the New Court:

So I've heard.

* Jefferson looked winded
* He made some nice post moves
* He passed the ball much more then he did last year
* He got some easy baskets

What about his defense?

From what Sloan has said, most of the players seem to be a little out of shape, atleast by his standards. I wouldn't worry too much. Our guys will be ready. What I'm interested in is if Fes looks better than he did last year. We know he has talent, and Dwill said he looks a lot better. If he can get a good work ethic down, he could be big for us because I'm not sure Elson should even be in the NBA still..

I thought Jefferson looked good.. made some nifty post shots.. a preview of whats to come.

D-WILL couldn't make anything.. bad, bad bad shooting

Evans has already been covered - upside galore

I was actually impressed by Jeffers, he was taking the ball to the hole like a man and playing pretty fearlessly and with confidence.

I thought Hayward looked pretty meh. Wish he would have shot it more and more confidently. Elson was pretty good. Raja looks like a starving african child. The thing I like about Watson which seperates him from the Hart and Knight is his frame.. both of those player had skinny, Ronnie Price like frames.. Watson actually has some bulk and seems to be pretty strong.

The funny part, I was talking to a Jazz fan on rg who's watched Minny games and said Jefferson never looked this athletic before even though he was winded.

Lmao

What the hell? Hayward wasn't "meh" at all. He was one of the worst (if not THE worst) player on the floor today. Made one shot, got a block and a couple of boards, and turned it over like crazy. Did nothing worth note besides the aforementioned basket and block besides made a sharp pass to Gaines that turned into nothing.

I'm going to try to be patient. But nothing about Hayward looked like an NBA player to me. If I knew nothing about the team I'd say cut the kid. But since he's one of, what, 5 players this team has EVER drafted in the top-10... (explitives)

That was awful. The Hayward block was the highlight of the game (at least up until we left). Anyway here is the vidja I took of the court being unveiled. Watch it in 720p mode, sorry it looks like crap

Thanks for sharing that video. I like the new court.

btw...was this event open to the public or did you have to be invited? I would've thought there would be more fans in the arena...

It was public. My guess is it wasn't more crowded because LDS conference is going on right at the same time.

Nichols has a better chance of making the team than Thompson

Evans can outjump AK for rebounds.

Jefferson is about 1/2 in shorter than AK, and about a 1/2 in taller than Sap.

Sap was unimpressive.

Jefferson did not catch and drive at all.

Jazz seemed taller, but that could be just because they were playing short guys against short guys. We'll have to wait and see on that.

Gaines is still a hucker. Will be cut

Jeffers didn't improve, Athletic, but can't score from >6 feet out and doesn't protect the ball very well. Will be cut.

Watson will be a backup that can actually shoot the ball.

Elson shot 2 Boozer range jumpers and drained both. Didn't know he had that kind of range.

CJ didn't shoot the ball well, in the limited time he got.

Simple breakdown:
The ones that sucked today
Hayward (see post above) and Watson. Nichols and Memo. Memo practically wasn't there.

Meh performances
Gaines, Price, Thompson (just barely, not a factor), Jeffers (made some plays, but still meh), Bell, Deron (would've been "sucked" but he doesn't have to prove anything and let the others get a chance to shine), Fesenko, Miles, Millsap (made some plays, didn't look bad, didn't do anything great)

Good to great (in that order)
- Elson looked quite good. His jumper is very nice and he's not scared to shoot it (but his shots came within the offense as well). His court awareness was solid, as was his knowledge of what to do. I can't say anything one way or another about his rebounding or D, but his D didn't look bad from what I could glean
- Jefferson wasn't spectacular but you could tell he was trying to defer more and play in the system than dominate the game (which he could've done). I'm happy with this as I'm far more concerned with what he hasn't proven (being a team player) than what he has (can destroy in the post). That said, there were a couple of plays where he did some old school Al (get good position, get the ball, back his man down, spin into the weird hook shot), but again, he was definitely looking to get his teammates shots first and that's encouraging. I can certainly say he didn't look out of shape. He looked to be in good shape. I don't know how he could've looked bad, actually.
- Evans was definitely the surprise and bright spot of the day. I, too, thought he would just be a clueless athlete, but it wasn't the case. He didn't display any particular skill to his game, but he did show some very impressive and quick jumping to go along with nice overall instincts and decision-making. You had to keep a body on him because he'd rebound right over someone's head but he wasn't making any obvious mistakes at the same time. This kid can find a way to play somewhere, I'm sure. His legs are ALARMINGLY skinny, though. He looks like one weird landing away from Shaun Livingston. His legs don't look like they can support him. His legs make Alexis Ajinca's look like Malone's. Evans doesn't have a frame or the genes in general to build his calves very much, but he definitely, definitely needs to work on that.
- AK was the best player on the floor. He did what you might expect; impressive passes, got his hands on the ball on D, made some plays around the rim and got to the line. He didn't dominate in one area or even in general, but overall was probably the best today.

My take:

The floor looks great.

The game, you have to take with a grain of salt. Gaines outplayed Williams. Come on.

-Sap: Looks fine. I don't see the meh. Sap is loved because he is a hardcore player, and I'm sure nobody wants to get injured in a scrimmage game.

-Big Al: Looks good. Seems like he is confused as to when to pass it and when to take it to the hole. I hope all this passing talk isn't getting him overly worried. We need him to take it to the hole.

-Bell: I think he looks good. He will be that veteran wing defender-who-can-nail-a-jumpshot that we need.

-Evans: Damn, what hasn't been said. I'd bet a million bucks this kid won't be cut.

-Hayward: Don't get the hate. I thought he played well, and he is so athletic and long for an American white boy. Had a nice block. If he had made a few of his shots that rimmed out and had been a bit less turn over prone, I think we would be singing his praises.

-AK: Looks wonderful. Love his post game.

-Fes: He looks GOOD. Weight wise, I mean. I think he could be a legit starting center for us if he keeps his focus. Got to the line nicely a couple times.

-Price: Was on fire with his jumpshots today. Played well.

-Gaines: I think he needs to be cut, but he played a good game. Still was splitting the FTs, ugh.

-Watson: He didn't play a great game but I could see that he is more of that "point-guard"-minded backup that we are looking for. He has a great body, and will provide what Gaines and Price don't.

-Thompson and Demitri(or w/e): Hmm. I want Thompson based on the team based on his background and college career, but neither of these guys had much of a showing.

My take:

.

I disagree on Fes. He will never be a legit starting center...........ever.........on any team. He is worse than terrible on the offensive end and I understand that's not where he is needed but he is a complete liability down there. I'd say I'd put him at about a 35% shooter............if all his shots were breakaway, wide open layups. That's not hyperbole.

And if thats what Prices jumper looks like when "on fire" then the guy that coined that phrase would like it returned. Banking in a 3 from the top of the key and then hitting the top/side of the backboard on the next possession from the baseline isn't exactly Reggie Miller-esque.

I enjoyed the game. I think Jefferson and d will took it easy so the new guys could get a chance to shine. Gaines and Hayward hustled but were sloppy. At one point they had Evans guarding elson and evens held his own in the 5 spot.
