What's new

What does Hayward have to do his rookie season to be considered at least a decent pick?

Yeah, bein good won't cut it. He's gotta be the best, er else he just aint nuthin.

Boozer was, what? The 40th pick in his draft, or sumthin. Anyone taken 39th or above that year who aint better than Boozer aint even "at least a decent pick," I figure.

Hayward is always going to be compared to similar players in the same draft. He needs to play as well as Babbit, Henry, and George or people will say the Jazz picked the wrong player.

Then when some other stud picked later makes the All-Star team, people will say the Jazz should have drafted that player.

Yeah, and "play as well as" can only mean similar (or better) box score stats, eh, Catch?

I mean, like, a rookie who plays a solid 15 minutes a game for a playoff team could not possibly be "as good as" a rookie who score 6 more points a game playin 40 minutes for a lottery team, ya know?

Everything is so much easier with hindsight. In hindsight, the best thing that could have happened to Matthews is to go undrafted. Now he is a free agent with no indentured servitude at low-scale pay to fulfill. The drafted players (especially second-rounders) can thank their union "brothers" for bein a virtual slave.

I'll consider the pick a success if he leads D-League guards in overall FG% and hits at least 35% on his 3's. Also, being from Butler, he's must deliver all meals to the Jazz vets in a TUX and always speak with a British accent.

New Nickname for Spencer Hayward. Mr. Belvedere or Geoffery??

What exactly is a stiff about him?

It aint nuthin but a total redundancy, eh? And not only that, but also, too, it's just kinda sayin the same damn thang twice, all over again, for a second time, and stuff.

Once ya done said "white boy," ya done said stiff, too.

Aint that right, Vinny?

Well now that I've calmed somewhat I guess like YB, Henry was the SG I would've preferred but (speaking of stiff and Honz, Henry's hands are very large good trait for a bball player) so while I'd like for him to have better numbers then Henry its hard because not all teams and minutes are equal. So I will say as long as he comes in competes hard doesn't back down, proves SJF wrong in that he is a better ball handler and distributor then Mathews and a competent defender (he wont likely be as quick or as strong as Mathews) then I will be happy.

The only thing I want to see from him is resilience. When his **** don't work, I want to see that he doesn't care. When his shot isn't falling, I want to see him shoot it. When he gets beat, I want to see him shake it off but have an attitude about it. I want him to break a play when he thinks he has a play he has to make. By the end of his first season, I want to see the confidence in his game that he doesn't just belong, but that he thinks he's better than the guys checking him, whether that's really true or not.

I expect him to get minutes early in the season, then Sloan will emphasize what he needs to work on - most likely defense (Sloan does this with every young player) and he will ride the bench constantly beginning in mid-December. Hopefully after the all-star break (when most rookies can bounce back after hitting the rookie wall) Hayward will still be fighting through it and keep improving enough to get himself back into a 9-man rotation towards the end of the year.
