What does LeBron need to do to surpass Jordan?

actually, i think 'casual' fans will never accept LeBron as GOAT. MJ will always be the best to the average joe.
but in all honesty, im no lebron fan but as a hardcore basketball junkie and a historical student of the game, i can appreciate what this dude does.
i think lebron will deserve consideration to be the best on-court basketball player of all time. And I also think he has a legit. shot at 8 championships.

Is he even the best SFOAT right now? To me, he has yet to even propel himself past Bird and Magic.

it's tough to appreciate and rank players while they're currently playing. he's making it look so easy right now it's easy to lose track of just how historically great he is. give it some time to sink in.

30 years from now, neither Jordan nor James will be in most people's conversation of the GoAT. The popular conception of the GoAT will always be affected by nostalgia, and people have little nostalgia for players they barely remember.

that was before basketball exploded bro. bob pettit is one of the Greatest OF ALL TIME yet most people dont even know who he is. basketball was childs play back then tho, relatively speaking. that's my whole point about Jordan, he was THE guy when basketball became a 'thing' and in that process he became the symbol for it. The Air Jordan brand alone will ensure people won't forget him 30 years from now. everyone and their momma knows dat Jumpman logo is his airness. Internet didn't exist back then either, media was completely different.

If this site exists 30 years from now, we can compare notes then.

Agree with the last couple of posts by FT.

I totally DISAGREE with the last couple of posts by FT! His thinking is flawed and his knowledge of NBA basketball must be VERY limited! Probably came on the scene in the 1990's and never saw Russell or Wilt the Stilt or Oscar Robertson, who AVERAGED a "triple double" for the WHOLE year! Wilt averaged 50 points a game for a WHOLE season! Wilt dominated the sport so much that they had to invent the "3 second" lane violation or he would have averaged 75 points a game!

Jordan was THE guy when basketball became a 'thing' and in that process he became the symbol for it.

Negative! Basketball was made popular in this modern era by Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.....maybe even with Dr. J! It has been "marketed" much better when Jordan came on the scene, but those other guys made the sport popular!

40 year old jordan was avging 20pts shooting .445fg with no lift and basically 1 decent knee. kobe that year was shooting .451fg. tmac was shooting .457%

i remember him dropping 35 against timberwolves with a dominant KG(was the best player at that time), and i was like 'damn, young jordan would drop 40 every damn night'

and early 00's wasn't 100% sissy league yet. teams actually played decent D.

put jordan to current bulls team minus d rose, MJ would make a mockery out of this heat team. that bulls team without drose gave Heat a good series. i don't even know how badly MJ would abuse that heat team without a legit center. i could see him avg 40pts in that series. bron is a good defender, but he can't stay in front of MJ. MJ would just blow past him by every possession.

...first of all, Michael Jordan IS NOT the greatest player of all time. To be the greatest of all time he'd have to have the most championship rings. He doesn't....not even close! Bill Russell has the most rings. (11 or 12?) To be the greatest of all time he'd have to be the leader in key statistical categories both in a season and for a career. He doesn't. Wilt Chamberlain, Jabbar and Karl Malone have him beat in all statistical categories both seasonal and career. Now, James as you pointed out, should have no problem topping Jordan in personal stats. I doubt, however, he will beat him in Championships.....and catching Russell in that area? Throw it out of your mind! Unless James teams up with Durant and Westbrook (extremely doubtful!) after the Heat disintegrate from aging and a lack of talent this year, James will make some finals but will most likely not win more than 1 more.

Robert horry better than everyone except bill russell

Disagree
I take bron over bird and magic by a mile

Lebrons season last year was out of this world stat wise and he won the title (his PER was off the charts)

He is even better this year.
Dude is amazing and definately deserves to be in the discussion with jordan.

If LeBron finishes the season with 60% FG, 40% 3PT, 80% FT.... holy ****.

It is really tough to say is who is better. If you put all the variables aside and just look at the way they play. I think Lebron is a better defender but not as clutch. Lebron is more complete but Jordan was more dynamic on the offensive end. Lebron is less selfish than Jordan, but almost to a fault. A lot of these things just make them different players. Its just tough to try and quantify who is better. Its unfair to Lebron at this point because his career is unfinished.

If we are talking skill on skill, man on man, then I think I lean towards Lebron would edge Jordan. I may be wrong but I think Lebron's size and physical presence would overwhelm Jordan. I think Lebron would probably make life difficult for Jordan by playing lock down D on him. When Lebron puts his mind to it, he shuts down practically anybody 1-5. He's probably the best defender to play the game. He made Derrick Rose look very pedestrian in the playoffs when Derrick was playing unguardable. Remember, Jordan was also a product of a lot of generous calls. So I guess you would also have to ask, what year are these guys gonna play the fantasy game? I truly believe the NBA was a lot more crooked back then.

Its just different players from different times. Hard to say

skill on skill? are you nuts? that's the most asinine thing i've ever heard all year. in what world bron has better skills than bron?

and bron shut down anybody 1-5? that's the most overblown thing ever. let's see if he can shut down hibbert 1 on 1. lol. it's pretty much known fact that he can't guard any 5. and he is the one who got neutralized by friggin boris diaw.

basketball knowledge on some of you posters are alarming. bron is great, but not MJ great.

1 on 1, MJ beats bron 9 out of 10 times. put MJ to current bulls team, MJ would make a mockery out of this heat team.

This is amazing on so many levels.
