What Free Agents Do You Like?

Here's the list of free agents, https://hoopshype.com/free_agency_2014.htm

I think we all want Lebron, but we need to be realistic. Melo wants a contender, money and a big city. Wade is a ghost. Bosh and Pau are overkill here, and probably overrated at this stage of their careers. Dirk and Duncan aren't leaving Texas, etc.

Having said all that, 2014 free agency offers the Jazz a very real opportunity to significantly improve their bench, and thus their team. Seeing our needs as, A. shooters, B. toughness and defense, C. SFs, and D. PGs, I've come up with the following names as possible targets:

(This list operates under two assumptions. A. The young core and rookies are focal points, and B. We aren't using our available cap space to absorb trash for picks again.

Vets off the Bench:

Kirk Hinrich - Decent shooter, and gritty defender. Tough. Jazz sorely need these qualities.

Andrei Kirilenko - Worth more than what he's making this year. Hometown ties, and a player option to leave sinking ship that is BK. If he'd come for 4 million, I'd welcome him home to finish his career here. SF is teams biggest need, since Hayward's 6'8" wingspan makes him an SG. If Hayward leaves, we really need help on the wing.

Ray Allen - One of the best shooters to ever do it. Probably wants a contender, but if he wants to coach after his career, coming here and teaching our guys to shoot would look great on his resume. Jazz were able to persuade him to talk to Trey before Heat game at ESA, so there might be a sliver of hope. Only made 3.2 mil this year. Since we'll have a lot of young players who will still be on rookie contracts, we could offer him a two year deal, with the second being a player option. Wishful thinking.

Shaun Livingston - had a solid year for BK. Length and D. Would be an awesome backup.

Mike Miller - past his prime, but healthier than he's been in recent years. Ray Allen theory.

Marvin Williams. At 3-4 mil, I like him. In a reserve role at SF, and SF only, I like him. Be certain his health checks out, though.

Pricey FA's Who We Could Get, But Probably Aren't Worth It:

Eric Bledsoe - Depending on who we draft, and what kind of offer another team throws at Hayward. If Phoenix is one of those teams, we should repay the favor by going after Bledsoe. Still young. Defensive upgrade at the point.

Trevor Ariza - long and athletic defender for the wing. Only 28 yr old. Could be a plan B if we don't get an SF from the draft who we feel is worth starting, and if Hayward leaves. When all is said and done, it's rather depressing.

Luol Dang - Great D and length. Is still 29, so you probably have to pay him. At 29, you wonder how many decent years are left.

It's a Risk:

Michael Beasley: has produced in limited minutes for the Heat this year. Contract would be cheap. Is still only 25. Have to be sure the shenanigans are in the past. Huge risk. Big reward.

What do you guys think? Who should we target, and why would they be good fits here?

The Ray Allen scenario is a pipe dream. Never gonna happen.

No thanks to Beasely.

Some of the others are interesting. I'd look at Deng for sure. Miller off the bench as well. Always a need for good shooters

Yeah, it definitely is.... But, it would be cool :)

I would be fine with the Jazz FO pursuing the following.
Not in this order necessarily and with definite dollar limitations I won't get into.
I will skip the obvious LeBron and other superstar talk who are unlikely to move.

Bledsoe, Deng, Stephenson, Bradley, Lowry, Sefolosha
Williams (again), Jason Smith, Hayward (match), and dare I say it ... Jimmer for cheap as 12th man.

I say no to Miller and Allen even though we need shooting. Allen is old and Miller just bugs the crap out of me.

Mainly I agree that we need 2 things badly. We need defenders, and we need shooters... in that order imo.

Nobody else on that list really jumped out at me, but I'm sure with more in depth review there could be a few more that would be useful on the team.

Oh, and thanks GVC, I forgot Isaiah Thomas. He's just good, I don't care if he's small.

Lowry would be good too. Nice catch.

Unfortunately, Lowry, Bledsoe and Thomas are restricted free agents.

Livingston, Hinrich and Gortat.

U'd do one or the other of livingston and Hinrich, not both. Would like to see Neto come over. Also depends on if Exum falls to us, or if we take Smart.

I just don't see the love for Gortat. Phoenix was much better without him, and Washington's success came from Ariza on the wing, Nene beasting, and Beal and Wall being who they are and older. Also, we just cleared the log jam up front, and Gortat is on the decline. 13.2 pts and 9.5 rebs doesn't excite me enough to steal minutes from Kanter, Favors, Gobert trio (when we will likely keep one or two of E. Murphy, M. Thomas, J. Evans, or M. Williams in the big rotation as well).

I have always liked Ariza. Would love to see him in a Jazz uni.

Avery Bradley could be good too. A little D being played on opposing shooting guards would be a welcome change.

Lowry would be good too. Nice catch.

Unfortunately, Lowry, Bledsoe and Thomas are restricted free agents.

Yea, it is a bummer. I almost left off the restricted FA's, but who knows... we might get lucky Portlanding one of them. Any one of those three would be a welcome addition to the team.

Thought about Lowry as well. Had a great year, but I'm worried about what he'll want to be paid in relation to how many years he has left. I get nervous with players who deserve their payday at 28, especially when our team might not be ready to capitalize on their value yet.

Free agency is such a crapshoot. Unlike the draft, you've really got to pay these good players. Have to be 100% certain the guy you bring in is worth what you're sacrificing. Don't envy Dennis. One bad, bold move, and your books are crap.

I would take a serious look at James Anderson

One game. What did he do in all the other games in his career, or this year when he got to play a lot more? I'm not too impressed tbh.

Still think the FO should take a look at pretty much everyone based on how good our team was last year.
