What is Exum's value?

You guys...

Why do you assume that fans set player value?

Do you also conclude that Gobert has little value?

Where or when did I say that? Nothing in that post even indicates I said that. Try reading it again and getting that out of my post. Fans have nothing to do with player value.

Most NBA fans and especially guys like Frank. Don't care what they do on the defensive end of the floor. It's all about the buckets. Defense is irrelevant to them, because it doesn't look good. Exum has little to no value right now to anybody but the Jazz.

I assumed that your first three sentences (fans don't care about defense) were connected to the fourth sentence (Exum has little value to other teams).

Sorry -- if that is not true, what was your point?

Thanks

You are insane! Exum is already an Elite defender, made us special defensively, is the only guy in the league I can think of that has a chance at guarding curry, and still very young and can get better on D. Teague is not the answer.

The team defended well with Exum off the floor.

Exum = elite defense is all hype and no substance.

Separate thoughts I guess I should have made the last statement in a new paragraph. My point was, that fans are underrating Exum because he's not flashy on offense. Sorry I was a little harsh, it was unintended.

The point of the last sentence was that he has little value to other teams because they have not seen him much and it's a bad risk to take on a guy with his injury. He has little trade value at this time due to those circumstances.

The team is defending fine. Fine is not elite. When Exum, gobert and favors were starting to get her the jazz were far and away the best defense in the league.

Except that PG's are killing us this year and they didn't to end last year when he was starting.

Do you have on/off numbers to support the Exum defense love? I can't find them. What I can find is Gobert-Favors on/off numbers. Remember they were both injured for significant amounts of time this season.

This. Utah wasn't just beating a few teams in a nice but meaningless run. We were knocking off the top teams in the west and also winning on the road convincingly. Best road team since s&m. There were quite a few people here who thought we might actually be better off without Exum due to his offensive limitations, but even though Burke improved his game this year, the team hasn't looked nearly as good as they did when they were clicking last year.

Exum's defensive impact was the real deal, and if he was healthy, Utah would be challenging for HC in the playoffs this year. I'm not sure why anyone would even question that, unless maybe they aren't watching the games and are just stat watching. Kind of like with Rudy. If you just look at Rudy's block stats, he seems good but nowhere near the dominant force he is. Stats can't begin to explain Rudy's defensive impact. Same with Dante, to a lesser degree.

Exum's combination of length and quickness on the perimeter is sorely missed this year, without question. Combine that with Favors and Gobert underneath, and Utah is a team NOBODY wants to deal with. Let's just hope Dante makes a strong recovery, and Jazz fans have a lot to look forward to.

Just look at how many easy buckets PG's are getting for themselves and their teammates because our current crop of PG's are no where near the level of Exum on defense. I've never been a believer in on/off court stats.

When your eyes are too busy looking at the stats,it's easy to miss all the opposing PG's filled with confidence going at the present Utah PG's.
With Dante his speed and his length didn't give opposing PG's a clear view of what and where they wanted to attack and he became a part of a dominate defense with Gobert and Favors NOT matched this year.

Do you have any stats to back this up? Point guards in the NBA have there way with every team these days. Dante gave up a lot of buckets to opposing point guards last year too.

I see your point. Thanks for clarifying. Just a miscommunication. Peace.

Nope. I'm not a believer in defensive stats. I base my statement on the performance of the team last year when he started as compared to this year and early last year when he didn't. Dante shut or slowed down some great PG's last year, including Tony Parker. I don't expect you to believe it, you are about stats, sometimes they just don't tell the story, especially defensively.

A Bleacher Report article last year showed his defensive rating to be #1 among all rookies including Wiggins and Smart
Top Rookie Defenders
DefRtg Opponent FG% Blocks Steals
Dante Exum 98.5 42.6% 0.2 0.5
Nerlens Noel 99.6 44.3% 1.9 1.8
Marcus Smart 103.2 45.3% 0.2 1.3
Elfrid Payton 105.1 46.6% 0.2 1.5
Andrew Wiggins 108.8 48.8% 0.6 1.1
