Im conflicted here. At one end, I feel bad for how stupid you guys on here will look when Cotton is starting for your team and you guys are loving it (despite doubting him the whole off-season). But at the other end, I am very excited to see Cotton as a successful starting NBA point guard.

Just remember when you are buying his jersey, you doubted him.

Chalmers probably benefited more than any other player on the Heat when it came to playing next to LeBron and Wade. He didn't have to play like a "point guard" at all. In the few games I saw this year, he looked pretty meh. In my opinion, I'd rather roll with Burks at the "point guard" than bring in Chalmers.

Do we need a traditional point guard, or do we need a guy that won't use possessions that he shouldn't and gives spacing and those possessions to better players?

Sorry that most UTAH JAZZ FANS might want players that have proven absolutely ****ing anything in the NBA. You should probably keep taking it personally.

This.
But Chalmers' shooting fell off the cliff last year (<30% on his three's). He may not provide spacing if he's lost his range. He did take 5 fewer shots per game than Trey, so there's that. However, the fact no one wants him is telling. I'll admit I'm undecided. Either Neto or Cotton could be a very effective backup PG for Exum next year and beyond. But one would have to be cut to keep Chalmers for one year.

I could've taken a minute to find that info but didn't. Thanks. Obviously, if he can't play, he can't play. He's just generally had the reputation as a decent shooter and plus defender is all. So again, I may just be living in the past.

But if it costs a second-rounder? I don't know.

DL once said he wants Utah to be known as the place that doesn't give up on players..

Based on that I dont think a move would be made for a PG to come in and play in front of Burke. I think they will give Burke another shot.

I would literally trade Cotton just to see you go away.

The only way I see Try Burke leaving the team is if he demands a trade, Kanter style. I'm guessing they want the group to grow together and so there is more gratification in the success.
I don't see him leaving just because some Jazz fanz don't like him, or think he's worthy asset

Yes, he did say he wanted Utah to be known as a place where they developed their players. But at some point you need to "give up" on certain players. Only way to keep all 15 would be to trade your picks the following season and not sign any FA's.

But I do agree with you that DL will not give up on Burke yet. As bad as he's been for two seasons, there's still a chance he develops into a good PG. Probably not a starter you'd want on a playoff team, but he could remain with Utah as a backup or increase his trade value.

Utah Jazz FB page just updated their cover photo that has Trey as 1 of 5.
Burke, Burks, Hayward, Favors, Gobert.
I guess because they've been on the team the longest or perhaps early prediction of starting 5.
I would like to see some Hood, Exum, and Lyles pics places, too.
I'm gon miss Evans.

While Chalmers (for a 2nd rd pick) or Cole (on a near minimum contract) would be solid investments, & at the very least minor upgrades over what we currently have at the position, I'm not sure that either move makes sense at this point in time when you take into consideration the fact that we would be forced to give up on a player with potential (Cotton) before seeing what we have in him (especially considering his contract) & that neither acquisition (Chalmers/Cole) is likely to make a significant impact on this upcoming season. If we were able to trade Burke for a late future 1st & then replace him with Chalmers (for only a 2nd), I could see the move making more sense.

It only makes sense (imo) to have Burke on this roster if the intention is to give him the opportunity to reestablish trade value by allowing him to start. Unless he is able to change his approach (ie: shot selection, pass 1st, etc) or suddenly transform himself into an efficient offensive player, I don't see him ever being a good fit as the long-term backup PG on this team (as long as 1 of Burks/Hood is coming off of the bench).

The only way I see this FO making a roster change (& risk disturbing the current team chemistry) is if the move has the potential to drastically improve our chances of competing (Bradley, Jennings, Hill-if IND is struggling-, etc). Although I don't necessarily agree with it, I believe that ultimately the decision will be to give Burke the first opportunity to start (but on a short leash), while also taking the time to evaluate whether Neto has the defensive, passing, & shooting ability that we are looking for from our (hopefully stop-gap) starting PG, as well as if Cotton has the potential to be a long-term scoring spark off of the bench. If the team appears to be playoff caliber in spite of it's PG play, only then do I expect the FO to go out & acquire a starting caliber PG either at or before the trade deadline (although personally I believe that it should be done now).

Seconded. GoFriars is worse than Red is good, and that's saying a lot because Red is a great addition to the board.

That's nice of you to say, Inspector Bagadonuts:-). Several months ago, someone on one of the Providence boards asked if anyone knew who the Friar fan was who was "giving Friar fans a bad name on Jazzfanz". I'm paraphrasing. But Maybe GoFriars is going to buy every member of this forum a Cotton jersey when Bryce makes the roster. Make that a cotton Cotton jersey....

Personally, I don't mind GoFriars and Red. They're passionate about a specific player and defend him when others attack. Great for them; they're both FANS! I'm not gong to go back through all their posts, but I think both have been fairly respectful.

Are Red and GoFriars a little too fan(atical) in their love of Cotton? Maybe. But we've had supporters of other players like Arroyo, McLeod and Dee Brown who have been just as vocal (or more so). I went back a little so as not to offend those who are/were ardent fans of current or very recent Jazz players.

I really hope they are right about Cotton, just as I hope Trey makes a huge leap and Neto thrives under the guidance of Quin. I'm in favor of whatever makes the Jazz better.

It is Cotton that has brought them here, just like Williams, Kanter, AK, etc. brought us fans from different states and countries. Red and GoFriars - I hopefully both oy you become fans of the team as well as Cotton so down the road, whatever happens, we can keep you around, just as we still have fans in Turkey, Russia and Illinois even without having players from there anymore. Don't let a few drive you away. Besides, some of the comments are just good-natured jabs.

I mainly called him out for saying, "how stupid" we would look after Cotton is our starting pg.
