What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

Cidade de Deus. Very good movie.

I remember thinking when I was watching "Slumdog Millionaire" that, in many ways, it was a crime that Cidade de Deus missed its moment. There is no doubt in my mind that if those two films switched release years that Slumdog would be relatively obscure and Cidade de Deus would be a Best Picture winner.

Wrong

Why do you say that?

I mean, not to call it early or anything but Slumdog Millionaire, only a couple years out, is already starting to look like a relatively forgettable Best Picture winner.

I agree. In fact I think Slumdog was forgettable right after I left the theater.

a) Because you're wrong.

Brilliant and incisive.

If you're really trying to pick a fight with me (again) you'll have to try harder than that.

b) According to who? You?

It appears to be derelict on the water in terms of its place in film conversation and popular conciousness. I don't think its a stretch to say that early returns suggest its Best Picture legacy will be less "Godfather" and more "The Last Emperor."

I compare the two films (I'm not certain that you've seen City of God since we haven't established that) because they share a number of superficial and plot similarities as well as a significant amount of international flavor that is dependent on setting. It's not a totally random compare/contrast exercise.

Yes, I've seen both. Your claim that if they both came out in the same year that Slumdog would be "relatively obscure" while you agree that they're both similar is, as you would put it, just silly. I liked both of the films, but I'm not going to say that if they came out in the same year that City of God would have/could have won best picture and Slumdog would be obscure, because that would be wrong, silly rabbit.

For those of you who liked Cidade de Deus, I suggest you watch another great Brazilian movie. It's called, "Tropa de Elite." Or in English, "Elite Squad" It's about the special forces in Rio who go into the slums to bust up drug dealers. They show no mercy on either side. It's very good as well! Great plot and the suspense is also very good. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Of course that's not what I said. I was saying they would switch circumstances if they switched release years. But thanks.

You make it seem so black and white. But wrong again. Nice try though, guy.

We need to get Vince McMahon on the phone to get you two in the ring. My money is on Kicky due to Archie's bum knee and it eliminating him from lifting hard for the next 6-8 weeks.

Actually my knee is getting better. I can put it down off two feet with two hands pretty easy right now. Plus, just last week, I put up 315 twice, a personal best. In other words, I could take kicky with a single word ----- "Boo!" .

I don't even bear any animosity towards Archie. At this point I'm generally perplexed by his hostility. I even thought The-Joker's burn on him in the chat box recently was a low blow. I wish him well.

Regarding its place among Best Picture winners, "Slumdog Millionaire" was better than "Crash", but probably not as good as "Driving Miss Daisy" or "Chicago".
