Ten years ago or so (I was around your age), I was a total cinephile. I would watch a Bergman or a Tarkovsky movie, and I would then spend hours reading critical analysis from film critics and academics. I also thought of myself as someone who watched FILM. Not mere movies like some philistine! And you know what else? I used to keep a log of movies I watched, along with a rating. And I would rate movies to two significant figures, as you did. :D

Serious? I do all of those stuff. I was just going to watch a Tarkovsky movie but I fell asleep before I could open it. And to top you I tried to write my own critical analysis before I gave up :D

Yep. Totally serious. I no longer do any of that. Now I'm content to look down at people who know less science than me.

Seriously though, If you're into Tarkovsky, I'd recommend The Return by Andrey Zvyagintsev. It is my favorite Russian movie post USSR, and it has a very Tarkovskyan feel with its deep reflections on Russian-ness.

I am not yet into it yet as I haven't watched any of his movies. I was spending more time in Japanese and Korean cinema but I appreciate the suggestion.

Late Edit: Actually, I watched The Return and I loved it. I probably shared it here too if I recall correctly. I don't know why I thought I didn't watch it. It had some memorable scenes.

Ivan's Childhood

So I started my Tarkovsky adventure with his first feature film. I don't think I will be able to forget some of the scenes I have seen. 9.2.

I have found a letter by Jean-Paul Sartre talking about Ivan's Childhood while I was searching for analysis(es?). I couldn't write anything after it.

Great trailer because it doesnt really give the story away.

Anyway, I thought it was a damn good movie. Great acting. Nice mood. Solid story.

85% on the RT.
 
Ivan's Childhood is one of my top 10 movies of all time. Another great movie centered around a kid is Pelle the Conquerer.
 
I ended up finding these two movies on Netflix under the "critically acclaimed" category and really liked them both.

The corrupt police captain in la confidential, he was pretty good in that but yeah seems like you rarely see him
 
Watched 47 Ronin. Meh. It had some potential but story didn't pick up. No character development and few action scenes to make it up for it. Seriously disappointed. 6/10.

Guy Pearce was solid as usual but Robert Pattinson hit it the **** out of the got damn park. I thought this was a solid ****ing movie.

Watched nightcrawler, thought it was great, Gyllenhall had a america psycho vibe to him, one of those characters you just can't stop watching and can't wait to see what they'll do next. thrilling final act. also gotta give some love to his co-star Riz Ahmed who was really believable in his role, when I saw him I knew I remembered him from something - he was in the dark comedy four lions.

How many movies would you say you watch in a month? For me it's about 1 or 2, sometimes less.

I don't find the typical Hollywood movie format/formula appealing. I also don't want to wade through too much pretentious ********* indi crap to find the worthwhile stuff.

Ebbs and flows for the most part. Sometimes I go months without watching any films. I cannot stand the Hollywood formulaic garbage. If you do want to see that kind of stuff, get recos from QSH. He's about as basic bitch as you can get.
