What's new

When did Burks start sucking?

I don't want to say "I told you so" in regard to Burks, but I told you so.

Burks hasn't regressed, he hasn't gotten worse, etc.

He is what he is...a backup SG. It's not a bad thing. We need a backup SG. This is a good thing. We just need to get him playing in his role and quit doing all this silly starting PG crap.

So we're back to the core 4 now that we have Burke?

I thought so.

Burks isn't a pg. His head is probably a bit confused with what his skill set offers and what the coaches are telling him to do. However, he must develop some sort of a consistent jump shot. If he can do this he'll be just fine. We will know what is really there by the end of the year, let's not jump the gun yet.

Burks can certainly still improve throughout his career, but he will have to actually work on his game to do so. Some players just aren't really motivated to put up the extra shots, do the extra drills, in order to improve their skill level. Not a big deal, happens to every team, and there is no way to really know whether player X or Y will fully dedicate themselves to their craft. Burks manifests the counter-argument for drafting potential over polish, athleticism over skill.

He is a more energetic CJ Miles. He will have games where we laud him as the second coming of MJ and many more games like tonight.

He is the Colorado Bulldog. He should be traded to the Faqqots with Biedrins for a center that will back up Kanter. Then use these two players and a pick or some other player in a trade to get a center/powerforward like A. Davis.

If I were coach I would make both Kanter and Gobert wear sneakers with lead weights in them. If they could learn to set their feet for picks and defending and wait for the actual shot in the post they both would be twice as effective.

ps alot of beer hope that made sense

Kind of.

sounds simple.

Just trade for a player like Anthony Davis.

Got it.

I swear he was better in his rookie year. Or he has just sucked all along. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe he fooled me, he fooled you, he fooled Zulu too. He fooled all of us on this school bus.

S guards who cannot S always suck. That has been burks problem all along. Seems to be a Jazz curse.

1. He can't shoot.
2. He can't defend the 1 or 2 effectively.
3. Despite his decent handle and acrobatics at the rim, he doesn't finish well or draw fouls/hit free throws at a good enough clip to warrant having the ball in his hands.
4. He seems to have little understanding of 5-man basketball.

To answer the question: He was never that good.

I never viewed burks as part of the Jazz's "core" players. I always thought it was funny when they referred him as part of the core 4. Unfortunately, the Jazz just don't have that much talent on this team. I don't believe coaching would change the number of wins... The Jazz just aren't good.

It pains me to say this because I love Burks raw athletic talent. I think the problem is that he doesn't work hard on his jump shot. I heard a radio interview when they talked about Jazz players hiring shooting coaches during the summer to help them on their shot. Not Burks, he trains a lot by himself. He misses way too many bunnies in the lane and he hardly ever squares his shoulder and steps into shots.

I think if his role was more defined as the "two guard who comes off the bench and scores", he would be fine. But trying to make him into a PG is painful to watch.

Locke posted his first quarter career numbers (i.e. most of which have not been at PG) and they are atrocious. I don't think he's a starter. He could be decent off the bench against other benches. But he's not the player we were all wishing and hoping he would be. And that's the gamble of the draft.
