What's new

Where is that pit bull thread when I need it?

So if you have a gun but never shoot anyone, it's not a weapon then?
Well, according to your beloved dictionary.com:
https://dictionary.reference.com/browse/weapon
A weapon is
any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.
A gun never used to shoot anyone isn't a weapon since it's not being used in "attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war".
A weapon is only a weapon when used as such. There are such things as "dual-purpose".

from a recent "Ask Amy" newspaper advice column
LOL!!!

Dear Amy:

My brother is getting married outdoors and has invited all of his friends to bring their dogs to his wedding. His own dog, a coyote/pit bull mix, will be part of the wedding ceremony.

The trouble is that my 4-year-old, who is also part of the ceremony, is frightened of dogs (I am sure this is partly my own doing) and my 16-month-old seems to want to run and pet every dog he sees.

I am afraid of big dogs, and the pit bull/coyote mix really scares me. I don’t want my children to be afraid of dogs, yet I am afraid of them and I am sure the dogs can sense that. How should I handle this?

Frightened

The advice, after Amy consulted someone else, is a method to try to sensitize the children to dogs so they all can enjoy the wedding. She ends her response by saying:
"If the child is not able to handle it at this point, she/he should be excused from the wedding party; realistically, you have no way of knowing how all of these canine guests will behave when they are brought together at this event."

not to distract you all from the other important matters under discussion in this thread...

What was that term we had for posters who grabbed a topic and wouldn't let go, causing the thread to go on and on and on and on and on...?

Amazing. Archie is nowhere to be seen in this thread and within 30 minutes of his picture being posted he makes an appearance.

I only clicked on it because I enjoy reading Salmonhobo's posts and I knew he was up to something. Ding - ding - ding - I was right.

No, it says a weapon is something for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war. Not something that has been used but something for use. So a gun that has never been used is still a weapon under that definition, and so are cropped ears on a dog that has never been in a fight.

I blame the enablers just as much, though. It's not like they don't know exactly what they're getting themselves into. Take them away, and you take away all of Salty's weapons. Except his ears. And his nose. And his armpits...Ok, forget it. He's still got plenty of weapons left. Nevermind.

Your intellect is truly dizzying.

But if I don't use the gun as a weapon, how is it for use as a weapon? Doesn't the term "for use" require some action?

Well since it was invented for use as a weapon, it's a weapon. If you don't ever use it, then you have a weapon that never gets used.

Like a collector that has an old rifle hanging his living room. It can be all polished, with no intentions to ever actually shoot it. But it's still a weapon that could be used for its original purpose at any given time.
