Where It Went South

I think the Jazz season went south at the all star break. Just prior to that the Jazz won 7 out of 8 games (7 in a row) including a big OT win at Dallas. Its only loss during the span was a 3 pointer to NO the night after the OT win in Dallas. Trey was in the rotation and was helping. During the all star break the team did not renew Erick Green's contract paving the way for Shelvin Mack and Trey doing real viscious pine. When the Jazz came back after the all star break they stumbled. The Mack trade makes sense particularly when there may have been other veteran trades brewing. I just have the feeling if they had resigned Green and let Trey be the backup point this would have been a playoff team.

IMO it went south from the opening game. Jazz went 14-28 (over half their games!) in games within 5 points with 5 minutes to go. That is a major item that needs fixing.

No offense to Shelvin Mack as I think he is quite good and should be on the Jazz and playing minutes. I don't agree with Shelvin and Neto getting all the PG minutes. I did not like QS' bench rotations. Especially with Alec Burks out, Trey Burke was only bench player capable of being an offensive spark. There were definitely games down the stretch where TB could have been a real asset. Instead Joe Ingles was probably the leading scorer off the bench since Mack's arrival.

Wasn't that stretch before the AS break against real crappy opponents and mostly at home? I think the comment that it went south with not having finishers on the team is so true. Young and inexperienced.

THe competitition wasn't the best during that string but included a win at Dallas, a win at Chicago, a win at Milwaukee and a pasting of the Hornets. Yeah the Spurs, Warriors and OKC wasn't there but these were NBA teams the Jazz were beating.

When we lost Exum, the Jazz were stuck with the worst PG rotation in the league. Exum's defense alone made a huge difference in how the Jazz disrupted opposing PGs and offensive sets.

Then it took another hit when we lost Gobert for 4 - 6 weeks, mostly because it meant we couldn't out-rebound other teams to compensate for our lack of offense and defensive consistency.

It went south in the offseason when they only signed Neto, Pleiss and Ingles.. Not just saying that because I called it, D Lindsey admitted it today though..

I agree that Erick Green should've been signed for a 2nd 10-day contract, and the Mack/Burke comments too..

I'd serious consider picking up Trey's option for next year tbh.

I'm actually not that disappointed with the season overall. The Jazz needed Gobert, Hood and Lyles to get experience, and for the Jazz FO to see the potential of the young players. They achieved that (with the exception of Exum). In addition, the Jazz effectively gained their playoff experience in the dozen or so games leading up to the POs. Every game mattered down to the last day. Losing to the Warriors due to 16 missed free-throws; getting beat by Jamal Crawford, Paul Pierce and Jeff Green; and getting beat by DWill and Dirk when it mattered---were all equivalent to PO experience. Whereas, getting bounced by the Spurs or Warriors wouldn't teach us that much.

The Jazz are a good defensive and rebounding team. Their offense is very limited, leading to turnovers and low shooting percentages. They need to get mentally stronger.

I heard it was due to Burke's defense

Burke would have those games but I also remember particularly last year when Quinn would sit Exum down and put Trey in the game for his offense. I remember one game where he hit a really big shot to settle the outcome. Trey will be someone else's headache from now on.

Trey has already had his option picked up. He is under contract for another year whether he plays for the jazz or they trade him.

^reformed cakk bakker

right?

Not completely true. I was torn between cake baking and signing another FA. I discussed several players with you at the time. Like Carroll and Bazemore. I was OK with a trade but not pushing for one. I was in the middle as I wasn't sure as I thought both approaches had merit and risk.

This year I am absolutely in the camp of bring in 1-2 players at positions of need.

It kinds of make you wonder if they would have stuck with Trey and Raul and not made the trade what would have happened. The worst is that they miss the playoffs.

you are considering it a year late. Already picked up and would be crazy to no do so, whether you want to keep him or improve his trade value. Presumably anyone who wants him would also want the option to match a contract going forward.

HonestlyI think we will be just fine, even if we don't sign anyone. Mack Burks and Lyles should be able to Carry the offense with Ingles being a stabilizing influence.
