Why are you a Jazz fan?

Just curio, why Jazz as opposed to any other team?

Lots of international posters, why do you choose to be a Jazz fan? Certain player? Watch the Jazz during your formative years?

Sound off.

Well I was born in Utah and pretty much every one here is a one. My whole family is. I don't really believe in it but I just pretend because I don't want my family to disown me.

Grew up in Utah during the 80s. Was hooked ever since. Plus I always cheered for the underdog...always hated teams that everyone else liked (Lakers, Yankees, Cowboys, etc.)

When I was real young, early 80s, my dad said the NBA was okay but really only during the playoffs. I remember him watching the Utah-Lakers series with Pat Riley and Frank Laden. I think he really became a Jazz fan after that series. Coincidentally that was also a time when two of the greatest players of all time played for the jazz and were getting better and better every year. I didn't pay much attention until my parents bought a used car from a LHM dealership and got nosebleed seats in the brand new Delta Center. My mom and dad went to the first game, which was against Golden State or something and it was lame. My dad took me to the Bulls game. It went triple OT, Jordan got ejected, I had lost my voice and the Jazz won. I was hooked.

I was the tallest 3rd grade kid in school (in the Middle East), so the basketball coach kept pushing me to give the sport a go. When I finally did, I became kind of obsessed, and I started following the NBA. Back then, my only source was a European channel that televised 2 games every Sunday. I would follow those religiously.

I did not have a favorite team at first. Then one day, I saw a Jazz v Lakers game where Utah played beautifully and got the win. I still remember how awed I was to see Stockton run back after a turnover, and draw a charge against the Lakers' 3 against 1 fast break. I remember Stockton to Malone running the PnR over and over and over, and I remember the commentator saying that everyone knew the PnR was coming, but nobody knew what to do about it. I loved the fact that the Jazz' strength came from perfectly executed tactics that depended on harmonious cohesion across the entire squad. I then bought a Malone jersey, and started wearing it to practice. I became known for being a Jazz fan, and that created a sort of emotional investment that further entrenched my fanhood.

When I began applying to schools, U of U and BYU were on top of my list, because that's where the Jazz played. And that was that.

A lot of my closest friends are Mormons from Utah, many of them are Utah Jazz fans (one in particular) and I was a Phoenix Suns fan. Phoenix Suns really suck so I just started following the Jazz. I've gone to the point were I like Jazz a lot more than Suns already.

I was a kid, maybe 9 years old and in the local store buying a Nintendo game, Dash Galaxy to be exact. On the wall there were a bunch of TVs for sale all playing a basketball game, Nets Vs Jazz. I had to wait to buy the game so I was watching the seemingly hundreds of TVs play the game and it was the 4th qtr of a very close game. I thought to myself, Nets and Jazz? Now those are funny names. I decided then that whoever won the game would be my team. That's when I noticed this guy on Utah's team that just seemed to take over, it was John Stockton.

Once I started following the Jazz I realized that they played a special blend of basketball, where everyone was involved. Where team play over individual stats was the important thing. And the Jazz did it beter than anyone else for years.

It was a somewhat magical experience for me. The Jazz dominated those last few minutes of the game and walked away with a victory. The Jazz became my team immediately, John Stockton my favorite player. I cried as if someone close to me died the day he retired. My wife told me to grow up... I told her she is not allowed to watch Jazz games with me anymore!

Oh yeah, and I've never been to Utah a single day in my life.

I honestly wasn't a very big Jazz fan. I hated Karl Malone in the 90's. I thought he was a dirty player. I remember seeing Karl Malone purposely kick his leg out as he always does so people are afraid to block him and he kicked Mookie Blaylock(He is in critical condition right now from car accident) right in the nuts. He was on the ground for awhile. He barely made it back to the bench. Karl did stuff like this all the time. It really irritated me. I like Stockton and Horny. I loved David Benoit. but I was rooting for the bulls over the Jazz back than.
Some people call it a fair weather fan but I am a player fan. I follow players and coaches. I don't follow logo's and cities it doesn't make sense to me.

I was rooting for the Jazz when Deron was brought on. I liked what Sloan was putting together. Than when I saw how Sloan would not recognize that we can't beat the good teams with Okur and Boozer and he refused to play Koufos and Fesenko even though they were way better at defense I lost it. I know those guys aren't great players but they clog the lane something all teams knew we could not do. Nothing changed. So I started voting for them to lose so they would break up this team.
Once Sloan gave the offense to Deron he also became a ball hog like Chris Paul where he has to be the playmaker on every play. Watching Deron dribble in circles became annoying.

Now I love the new guys but Corbin is retarded as we all know. I hope he creates a real offense but who knows. If the Jazz don't let the young guys play this year than I am done as a Jazz fan. My loyalty is to the game of basketball not to a team. And if teams are retarded I will not support them anymore.

This year we have a chance but management is just as retarded as Corbin if they are willing to risk the future core guys because they are afraid of firing a guy too early.

Having grown up in Utah, it was hard not to be a fan.

It started all the way back in the days of Ron Boone, Zelmo Beaty and Moses Malone and the ol' Utah Stars, and then when the Jazz moved to town with Pistol Pete, it was just natural to follow the Jazz, through the good and the bad years.

Grew up here. I remember being bummed after we got bumped by Seattle, which was probably the first time I felt a sense of caring about it to the point that I was disappointed. Got really into the finals years and unfortunately have been into it since.
