Why settle? Tonight’s draft-buy picks/move up

Given our trading of picks, and the exit of Ted Cruz and Crowder (he’s under 30), we could use some young talent.

Cy said the rumor is we’re trying to move up.

Why settle for that?

What teams are in cap hell that may trade their 1st for cash?

The hope is we get some relatively high 2nd rounder. I don't think 1st round picks are available anymore. The Gobert trade ended that practice.

What situations usually prompt teams to sell a 1st?
Nowadays, at team attaches an unwanted contract to a 1st for the other team. Like last night with the Bucks dumping Snell's 2 years $24 million with #30 for expiring Leuer. Or Brooklyn giving a 1st for Crabbe's $18.5 million expiring.

I know that.

You asked what situations lead to teams selling a 1st. Well, I answered.

Gobert was the last outright sold 1st rounder. That was 2013. 1sts for cash don't happen anymore.

Why? Because they haven’t? I gotta think a team who’s in cap hell might sell one for 3M.

Unfortunately, the money given for the pick doesn't impact the luxury tax. It helps pay it I guess and the other team saves the $1ish on late first rounder salary.

The most a team can give in cash is just over $5 million. For whatever reason, that amount just hasn't been enough to buy a late first in 5 years. Add in successful picks like Gobert, Kuzma, Hart and Bradley (lol), and teams dont want to just sell a player who could be locked up for chump change for 4 years+.

Even getting a second might be tough. Seems like there are a lot of teams willing to buy picks in that early second. I'm sure the Jazz will do everything they can. We could really use a young wing. Or a 4 with range who is also capable of switching on D. If we actually buy a pick I think the player we pick will fit one of those two molds. It will also probably be someone the Jazz think could contribute right away. Eric Paschall fits that for instance.

There's a few guys in the late first/early second range I'd be pretty excited to move up for:

KZ Okpala
Kevin Porter (last-minute green room invite; doubtful)
Matisse Thybulle
Eric Paschall
Chuma Okeke

Throw 53 and 1.25M to move up for a pick.

Throw 2.5M to snag 33 or 34.

Get of the guys I managed. I’ll go into epileptic shock.
