Woj: Celtics working to land both Gordon Hayward and Paul George

Robyn Hayward posted this on Instagram. It's letters from a junior high class writing to Gordon Hayward asking him to stay:

Don't play with our emotions Robyn. It is hardcore mean to post this and then leave. Please stay..

I don't want any part of Iguodala if it's for $20M a year like people are reporting.

I don't want any part of him regardless. If Hayward walks, I wanna go pure youth. Package Favors, Hood and the OKC 1st for a really good, young, long 3 with a lot of upside. Someone like Jonathan Isaac but who is actually attainable. Roll with that guy, Exum, Mitchell, Bolomboy and Gobert in the starting five en route to a top 3 pick. Get a stud next year and go from there.

Just for reference Ingles was our best isolation player at points per possession. He got 1.2 PPP. Exum was our next best at 0.91. Hayward and JJ 0.82 and 0.79 respectively. Obviously Exum got a lot less opportunities but when he got the ball in an iso he did well. Ingles and Exum were also the same ranking for shooting percentages in those situations which is what lead to their PPP. Exum also had a fairly low turnover rate in ISO as well. Inlges and Hill were better but Exum was better than Hayward, Hood or Mack in those regards.

One of the biggest areas Exum needs to improve(shooting threes is big but I think he is showed he can do this by the end of last season) is pick and roll. Overall he did well at a lot of things but this is where he turned the ball over too much. He shot decent, he got to the FT line out of this situation a lot(our best at this next to Hayward). He got a lot of "and ones" (Our best at this out of pick and rolls.) But he turned the ball over way too much 28.9% of the time. The only players worse on the team were Ingles(30.5) and Diaw(48%)

he's saying that if you go by what he'd done so far (which is all the evidence we have available to us!), then you can define his floor. This isn't difficult for anyone who doesn't have homer goggles on.

The probabilities are in favor of Exum getting better. But, there's always the chance that what he does in the offseason doesn't translate. When you consider these things, you have to use the latter in discussions of his floor. Simple.

ya ok what do you honestly think the chances are he doesn't improve one iota from third string ?

Actually i have a weird feeling they may pull the trigger and trade him if Gordon stays. DL talked him up something shocking the other day and i get the feeling Gordon doesn't have much time for him.

Let me deep dive into an instagram post from a players wife:

Would be savage as **** to post that knowing he is leaving.

She doesn't seem to be savage as ****. So at the very least he hasn't made up his mind yet, or is even heavily leaning towards leaving.

Detective Bawse on the case.

Is it really savage? I think it's a nice gesture to recognize the letters. I also would be surprised if Hayward (or the Hayward's) have their decision made before any meetings.

So CP3 met with the Clips today... I sure as hell hope DL is meeting with Hayward prior to July 1... I hope they talking every damn day. You would never know though because we are straight stealth mode most of the time.

It's savage bruh... hey look at these awesome letters... then Gordo lays a steamer on the 7th and 8th graders and breaks all of our hearts.

If they were as good as gone you take the letters and send a private letter saying thank you .... not a social media post.

it doesn't matter what I think. When you're defining a player's floor, and you have 2 years of evidence, then you can work with that to define the floor. The better question, at this point, is why you're making this point so ****ing difficult.

**** Hayward if he leaves. He's going to have major regret leaving with what everyone around him has built and made for him here.

Recognizing the letters BEFORE free agency and then leaving would definitely be savage.

Can we get a bunch of those kids in the childrens hospital to send him a video... those Jazz hospital visits always make me misty... lets really turn it on... then we enlist the help of some puppies and maybe some small monkeys... like the ones that ride dogs at NFL halftime shows.

I would hope that the reason Hayward hasn't opted out yet is to communicate with DL about the draft, FA, possible trades, and so forth.

Hayward gets to be the #1 option in a system custom-made for him, playing with Rudy Gobert. He's about to get paid $170M, with continued All Star appearances and deep post-season runs every year. Plus, the young talent that the Jazz have in Mitchell, Exum and Bradley is honestly as good as the young talent that the Celtics have. Mitchell, in particular, is going to be a stud.

If Hayward really wants to give all this up, it has to be to play with a specific player that he admires, like Anthony Davis or Kawhi Leonard. Otherwise, it's just a lateral move at best. The Celtics and the Heat, as much as they posture, just aren't set up for him.

If the Celtics wanted to recruit Hayward, they should have a) drafted Fultz, b) moved IT to a 6th man role, and c) traded for Butler. Then they could argue that they have a real contender in the Eastern Conference -- Fultz/Butler/Hayward/Horford/Zizc with IT as a 6th man of the year. But for whatever reason, the Celtics didn't do it.

Really great points. I do think the Celtics are able to make a little stronger pitch to sell it as not just a lateral move. If you consider they were at the same level or better than the Jazz without him, they have many different directions they can take the franchise and I know it gets overstated but just being on a contending team in the East may be the best chance any team could have not named the Warriors.

Also, Paul George isn't going to give up millions of dollars and a chance to be a franchise player for the Lakers in order to join IT, Horford and Hayward in Boston. If he were, there would be press releases coming from Paul George's agent saying Paul George would love to play in Boston with Gordon Hayward. George would be lobbying Hayward to go to Boston and make this happen.

Yeah, but the Celtics aren't better than the Jazz. If the Celtics played in the Western Conference and had to play the elite teams in the west 3 or 4 time per year instead of 2, they would be a 48-win team and probably a 6th or 7th seed. The only real advantage the Celtics have is that they're in the Eastern Conference. Their talent level isn't really better than the Wizards or Raptors. The Raptors actually looked better than the Celtics when they played head to head.
