Woj says the Jazz are listening to offers for Mitchell

How many unprotected picks would NY be willing to part with though? Bad teams generally don't do that... which is why you hope a good team gets bad because they are willing to do it. Heat have missed the playoffs 3 out of the last 8 years. So its not impossible.
Like if you are getting 5 total picks from NYK, I would assume 2 or 3 are the protected picks from other teams. Then 2-3 would be from NYK, I would expect 1 to be unprotected.

Maybe just add in far out pick swaps. Bet that in 4-5 years you will be better than NYK. Less scary than giving up an unprotected for NYK. That way they still have a pick to make.

But why would we want that? I'd rather have a mix protected/unprotected picks from NYK than owning Miami's cache tbh. Plus NYK has better young talent they can put in a trade unless you think Herro is a #2 guy and Jovic is a future star.
I'm just saying that's the starting point for me. You need at least one team to want to pull the trigger if there's another that's hesitant and you want a better package. I think the Heat and Knicks are good to play off each other.

And for me... I'd just rather go get the three from Miami and maybe two from the Lakers for Herro package I outlined. I think we can get protected picks for guys like Vando and Bogey so I'd aim for premium picks.

Now I would leverage the eff out of the other packages to get NY to pony up some mega package if they feel like getting wild... that is obviously a better deal. I'm just not sure how wild they will get.

I think Miami can only offer two picks currently.

I know the Jazz are trying to do that to an extent, but I think playing off the threat of keeping Mitchell is much more effective than the Heat.

Also, I’m betting that the league wants this to happen too. Getting a star, like Donovan Mitchell, into the biggest TV market in the country has to be a boon for the league. Especially because Mitchell grew up there and is a huge NY guy. It makes a lot of sense to all parties. . . Now all they need to do is pony up the draft capital to make it happen.
If the league is invested, then they should be in on the calls and ensuring us good ping pong returns in the agreement.

Elaborate.

I think he's very overrated as a player, and if he comes back in the package it means we get less of the good stuff. He's a huge bait player, especially with the type of numbers he posted at the end of last year. I think Barrett holds more trade value due to reputation than Quickley+Toppin, but the latter due is a much better combo. One of the reasons I didn't like the MIA package is that Herro carries more value than he's worth, Barrett is a more extreme version of that.

they can easily get to 3 plus the swaps... all they have to do with OKC is call and say "hey we will give you some cash considerations or a second rounder to dramatically improve the value of a pick you already own... you in?"

My thing is... What would Barrett and Herro get in a trade individually to a third team in terms of draft compensation? I'd likely rather have that then either of those guys. I could see Sacramento getting a little overly aggressive on a Barrett and giving up an unprotected pick or two.

That's fair....and I'd like to think we'd make the right moves, but I can very easily see us taking one of them and thinking we just got a very good young player. Barrett especially, he has Ainge written all over him.

Miami to Donovan is the same as Atlanta to Rudy to me.

I just dont think they have the juice to get a deal done. I expect NYK to be the team and I would expect a darkhorse team who isnt as widely talked about to be the 2nd in competition.
Hopefully, the Jazz took the Miami offer and reached out to say - gotta beat this significantly or we’re just going to keep him until next offseason.

I’m hoping New York and either Orlando or OKC are quietly in a bidding war right now. They seem to be the most asset rich teams that have a chance to be trash even after they acquire Donovan.

I would have said it's similar to Rudy-to-Chicago, but yeah, same idea.

Toronto is the dark horse for me. They would send their picks and OG/Trent... sounds not great, but they have hunted deals for OG in secret all summer and there may be something out there for him. 4 firsts from Toronto plus whatever OG gets you is pretty okay maybe. I think OG is the type of dude that gets an offer from 29 teams because of player type and fit. So something juicy could come from a 3 team scenario there. Again I'm looking at Sacramento or a team like that for some unprotected picks.

DET, ORL, SAC, CHA, NOP... a lot of those can convince themselves that Donovan is either the missing piece to take them to next level or a great complement to their young star...

If there's one thing I'm not worried about, it's teams not having interest in Donovan Mitchell. We underrated Rudy in a trade, we did the same with Mitchell. There will always be a market for superstar players, especially ones entering their prime like Mitchell.

Does a contender want Don the same way the Wolves wanted Gobert though?

That's my issue. I think the Jazz's asking price is so high that no contender is going to talk themselves into Mitchell because he's overrated, so what is needed to get him will make your team worse in the short and long run.
