Would you rather have us in the playoffs or getting better draft picks?

Playoffs or draft glory?

Str8line did say in the OP 'What would you do if you were a Jazz GM' though... so your vote should have actually been the draft pick.
I dont care though. I want to make the playoffs so thats how i voted.

If I could get a top 5 pick, I'd do that. If it's the choice between pick 10-14 or playoffs, I'd pick playoffs.

I don't see how we'd get higher than 10 or maybe 9. The right thing to do is to trade our 1st and a player in order to swap picks with someone in the 9 - 11 range. I wonder if by the trade deadline the Cavs would swap firsts (BK pick for Jazz's pick) for Favors. That would probably move us up 5 spots where we could get Robert Williams, one of the Bridges, Musa or maybe Knox.

what do draft picks do when they become free agents? they leave. they keep doing it. the jazz need to become the type of organization that players want to stay for: a playoff team

(yes, haywood left after a playoff run, but he'd been planning to leave for years, and it was the first time in the playoffs for most of his career.)

Hayward won’t be in the playoffs this year.

Playoffs, mainly because they're not going to suck enough to get a deep impact pick. Right now Jazz pick about 12 - I doubt they go much lower than that if at all.

I know the draft fan boys will be all over me but I don't see much difference between 12 and 15. Pretty much everything after 4 is a crap shoot anyway.

If The Jazz can come in a steal one from Houston or GSW and give DM a chance to play on a national stage, I think it would do more for the brand than a #12 pick.

The Jazz have picked twice at 13 during the last 30+ years: Karl Malone and Donovan Mitchell. And we got Stockton at 15, if I remember correctly. But the odds are long and I prefer we make the playoffs.

#2 we lack talent. Part of it is due to injuries. But another part is due to a need to rebuild for another year or two. We need to get an AI, Casspi, Gordon, Ginobli, etc who can come off our bench and drop big numbers. I’m not seeing that from Neto or Griffin or whatever else is on our bench. We just need another year to get us some athletes and another shooter or two.

LOL, you realize you literally just named about the 13th player on the Jazz roster* and a guy who just got waived two days ago. Yeah, that's a fair comparison. /sarcasm

*ahead of Neto on the depth chart (listed in alphabetical order): Burks, Favors, Gobert, Hood, Ingles, Jerebko, Johnson, Mitchell, O'Neale (OK, maybe tied), Rubio, Sefolosha, and Udoh. And Exum if healthy.

I want the playoffs, but if it takes a down year to help build talent around our two stars. . . so be it. Still fun to watch, even when they lose.

Donovan changed the timeline and the narrative. If Utah can clear the space, they’ll land a major free agent. If DL could pull it off, I’d be happy to see them offload Rubio, Burks and Johnson for something of positive value. If they can get a solid wing or PF in the draft and the other one in free agency.

Plus, hang on to Hood, Exum, Thabo, Udoh and Jerebko for another year. . . that could be something interesting.

JSYK, keeping Dante and Hood would likely dramatically change the Jazz's ability to take a stab at 2019 free agency which I pretty strongly believe in pursuing.

Donovan probably has changed the "narrative" to bringing in talent. Who wouldn't want to play with him at this point? He has championship written all over him. So does Rudy. We just need a third star.

This would likely be a fairly unpopular idea, but S&T Hood to Dallas for Dirk. Obviously I doubt Cuban does that after years of loyalty. I’d say most here wouldn’t do it, but it’d keep cap space open and I think if we are looking at 2019 for a FA splash, that having next season put us in the map and I think Dirk transforms spacing just by being on the floor.

you have got to be joking, right?

Joke about the hypothetical or joke about it never being reality? Of course it isn’t/won’t/wouldn’t but in a hypothetical world I think it could have some real impact beyond the next season (a la George Hill — great move even though he played half a season).

This is bad... in part because it would never happen and the other part because it’s just really bad if it did. Dirk is a mummy and is riding on fumes.

Indeed he is, but I don’t think his value would come from his modest numbers and horrible defense. This scenario would heavily rely on Jerebko off the bench.

In any case it ain’t something that’s happening, clearly.

I like the creativity and commend your guts to post that, but that may have been the worst post I have ever seen on this board.

I also think the Hill trade was the right move at the time, but in retrospect, I think the Jazz would have taken Dejounte Murray who would be helping the team today. Hayward left, Hill left, and we don't have a lot to show other than a deepish playoff run. Which may have been worth it, but I still sorta wish we had Dejounte.

That would be a horrendous deal for the Jazz.
