What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Our best option is still keeping Favors and seeing if he fits. His expiring salary is also a perfect fit for a trade if an all-star level player becomes available. Unless a really good player wants to come here during FA. Or 2 really solid players want to sign for cheap to come here.

I like Mirotic and would like him here but he is a downgrade to our roster over Favors. So unless its Mirotic and a really solid wing for the same price its an easy no for me. I am not sure who that wing would be maybe Green, Aminu, Ross, or Barnes.

We are much better off just grabbing one of many many many FA stretch PFs to backup Favors in case Niang and/or our rookie are not ready. Plus I think Royce and Ingles can play the stretch 4 role as well if needs be. Then use our room on a SG.

That gives us the best team on the court this year and flexibility to grab another star player if one becomes available.

Or guaranteeing Favors and trading him for someone that fits like Otto Porter, Harris, or others.

I also would guess its more likely Favors starts shooting 3s at a decent rate than someone like Niko starts playing good defense.

He has been a solid defender the last couple years. He wasnt great before then but he has been.

There is a reason he quickly became one of the fan favorites in Philly and it was for his hustle and defense. He isnt the most physically equiped defender but he is a lot like Crowder except taller and a better shooter.

He makes shots and is an interesting dude that's why he became a fan favorite... his defense is ***, has been ***, and will continue to be ***.

Crowder was mostly a spot up shooter and hustle guy. Mike Scott is a better spot up shooter and a hustle guy. It would be an upgrade at that position.

We do need offense. We also dont want to sacrifice and bring in poor defenders. Snyder has consistently shown he does not like players like that and does not play them.
Is his D worse than Harris? If so, by how much? Would there be any appreciable difference over the course of the game on that end of the floor?

There is so much wrong here I'm not sure where to start... there are not many FA stretch PFs and if we keep Favs we don't really have the space to offer one of them more than 4.8M so we will be outbid. Same thing on the SG front.

Favs ain't getting us a star player or an upgrade that fits in a trade. We also can't really assemble any kind of trade package for a star because of the protections on the pick we are sending to Memphis.

Niko is a better defender than Scott... Scott is a spot up shooter... he's good at that for sure, but that is really his whole game.

How about Harris, though? Nobody addressing any defensive concerns about Harris (if we got him, I wouldn’t stress too much about the D, but that same ability to look away doesn’t appear feasible with regard to Niko).

I dont like that we are debating Favors, Niko and Mike Scott. The window is right now. I wish we had higher aspirations.

We should be talking Tobias and Randle until those options are no longer in play. Those two have us as contenders.

There are tons. This is the most there have ever been in an off season. Yes, we cant offer much but a bunch of those guys are not getting paid that much. They go undervalued a lot. I listed a few that will go for cheap but there are many more. There are 48 players listed as PF that are FAs this year that played in the NBA last year. That is not including SF/PF and PF/C players.

Favors can land us a solid player due to his salary alone plus the fact that he is a solid player. It would take other guys as well but the fact that he is a large expiring deal he would be very helpful in landing a disgruntled player that is demanding a trade or a team that is changing course and trying to tank.

So he would have his best season of his career? That is possible but a pretty big hope to have.
Ya!! That’s never happened to new players in Utah. Lol

Lol. We don’t need Scott. Even Niang is better.

Something I noticed in the Dunc'd on mock - Sacramento is looking for a center and they were trying to get Adams, DAJ and others... why not just trade them Favors for Bjelica? That is if we've decided that we will let Favors anyways...

I dont know. They are probably close but Tobias is a much better more diverse offensive player. I think Harris puts more effort in on defense and doesnt take plays off but Mirotic has better tools to defend.
I think that’s the question, though, is how much replacement could Niko provide on offense of what Harris gives you when, for arguments sake, we say the defense is a wash? Harris costs $30+. Niko maybe less than half that. Can he give you 80% of the offense? I believe he can. I think the rest is diminishing returns. Just like I think focusing on defense at the cost of offense has significantly diminishing returns when you reach a certain point.

Go ahead and list the ones that will go for cheap and let's see if they get more than 4.8M. We need a SF/PF not a PF/C if we keep Favs... so use that when you are making your list.

Randle??? we don't need the creation... we don't need him now.

Harris??? Jeebus we have done this a thousand times... he ain't taking the paycut it'd take. May as well say we should go for KD.

The money is indifferent though. We are at our cap with Niko at 15+ million. So its not like we can get another player besides for maybe a couple million but that isnt going to make much of a different. Having a player for 30 also doesnt prevent us from re-signing our own players. I think having the better player gives us a much better chance of winning especially in the playoffs.

The point is that Niko is attainable but Harris really isn’t. If we’re willing to consider Harris, are we not willing to ask the question on Niko, given that he’s actually attainable?
